RE: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

2017-07-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

Thank you; at the time I wrote my post, I just could not remember the proper
term that is the Digital Crown.

Yes, it is interesting that we both chose the same watch face. I would wager
that many like the Modular watch face because it is the least graphical
face--providing, I believe, the greatest number of Complications.

Or it could simply be that "Great minds think alike." (big smile)

Hi Mark,

Interesting

Might hav to check that app in the nz store,

The Digital Crown is the dial on the side of the watch.

And more interesting is the fact your using the same complication I am

I found it was the best option for my requirements.

Subject: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

Hello All,

Thank you, most kindly, for taking an interest in my new Apple Watch. I must
say that the learning curve is quite steep, given that one has to learn,
essentially , both a new paradigm in terms of VoiceOver navigation.
Be that as it may, I have, thustly, found the experience immensely refreshing
and rewarding.

So, now that I have the watch teak the way I want it, for the time being, I can
tell you that I am most delighted with my first WatchOS app.

The app is called FitPort.

My favorite aspect of this simple health statistics dashboard is the fact that,
when installed on WatchOS, it also installs a Complication that allows one to
easily see the number of steps taken, from directly in the watch face. It's
absolutely brilliant.

So, I am currently using the Modular watch-face with the FitPort Complication
located in the center middle area of the watch face.

Now, with the turn of the wheel on the side of the watch, I cannot remember its
name, I can quickly and conveniently hear the number of steps I've taken so
far, in a day.

The best part is that this number is perfectly synchronized with the Health app
on iPhone just as WatchOS and iOS sync the Activity data.

Very, very impressive.

The FitPort app cost $2.99 in the US App Store. I have posted a very positive
review in the App Store on FitPort's behalf and I have mentioned them in a
Tweet at @FitPort.

Special thanks to Ed for pointing me to this amazing simple and easy-to-use app.

Until Next Time,

Mark

I'm glad you're getting the hang of it. One suggestion for notifications: a
two-finger scrub closes them. It doesn't dismiss them as the "dismiss" button,
does, meaning they'll still be in your notification center. It does, however,
get them off the screen so you can get back to your watch face or active app.
Waiting them out does, of course, work as well. Just so you have the option.

RE: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

2017-07-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Paul,

I apologize for the delay in replying as I only now just saw your post.

Okay, what many may not realize is that not all Complication areas are created
equal, so-to-speak. This is to say that depending upon the watch face, various
space-size is allotted for various Complications.

In short, the space reserved for any Complication will depend upon where that
space is located on the watch face in question.

Generally speaking, then, the corner locations are smaller than the
center/middle locations.

Therefore, in order to see the number of steps, via the Fit Port Complication,
place the Fit Port complication in a center/middle space of a watch face.

On my Modular watch face, for example, I placed the Fit Port complication in
the middle space.

Finally, it follows, then, that various Complications will display different
data depending on where they are located in any watch face so be sure to
experiment until you get the right fit for you.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Mark and all,

I have just downloaded installed and given permission for FitPort to have
access to my health data.
I next enabled FitPort complication on one of my watch faces. Now I am only
hearing 7% when I touch this complication. I can see that FitPort is reporting
the correct number of steps in the app, but I was hoping to see this number
directly from the complication. Is there an additional setting that I need to
tweak?
Thanks

Re: Does anyone know if there's a way of leaving VO turned on on my Mac permanently??

2017-07-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Eleanor,

Open System Preferences and select Users & Groups. Interact with Users, groups
and login options. Go to the last item, Login options group and interact again
to select it. Stop interacting twice, then navigate right to the Use VoiceOver
in the login window checkbox and check it. You’ll probably have to click the
padlock and put in your password before it allows you to do this.

Cheers,

Anne

Does anyone know if there's a way of leaving VO turned on on my Mac permanently??

2017-07-06 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I use VO on my Mac all the time.
However, every time I go to turn my Mac on at the start of a new session VO
doesn't come on automatically. It always used to, but since updating to the
latest OS I've had to manually turn VO on every time with command F5. This
isn't really too much of a hassle, but it's very annoying as I can't see the
screen at all so could really do with VO coming on right from the word go,
particularly when the Mac is running updates etc etc. So does anyone know how I
can get my Mac to go back to VO coming on automatically??

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Mark's New Apple Watch with One Big Question

2017-07-06 Thread Alex Hall
I'm glad you're getting the hang of it. One suggestion for notifications: a
two-finger scrub closes them. It doesn't dismiss them as the "dismiss" button,
does, meaning they'll still be in your notification center. It does, however,
get them off the screen so you can get back to your watch face or active app.
Waiting them out does, of course, work as well. Just so you have the option.

Hi Mark,

Mark

RE: High Sierra Beta

2017-07-06 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

Have you tried starttting up in the recovery console and then opening disk
utilities and then select the volume in question and eraise the entire thing.

This should also give you the option to reformat in the correct format.

Personally I"d do this using a USB bootable drive so you take the internal
drive out of the start up process. From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com

Ok. If I ever get the internal drive reformatted again to macOS Extended
and restore to Sierra, I may try the beta on the external again.

That case sensitive version of APFS may be the problem I cannot work around.

Hello Simon,

To be honest, I no longer see the need to attempt to sign in to my watch with a
different Appple ID than the default one. I am beginning to like the
notifications now that I've learned how to customize many of them.

Thank you again, for your very creative suggestion, however.,

Hi Mark,

I think you would need to have your watch using a different apple id to stop
the iMessages coming from the phone to the watch,

Remember that the iMessage uses phone numbers or email addresses to sync

Good luck though.

Mark,
Can you clear up a couple things? I get that you don’t want message
notifications at all, but you said you see the latest message every time you
wake your Apple Watch. Even if you are getting notifications, I don’t
understand how you see a message all the time? Notifications will go away after
a few seconds if you don’t look at them, so that when you next wake the screen,
you see your watch face. You can then swipe down with two fingers to access
notifications you may have missed, or swipe up or down on any watch face item
until you get “Notification Center”. But having a notification never go away
isn’t expected behavior, in my experience at least. Can you explain in more
detail what’s going on? This may help us to better help you.

As to the syncing of other data, can you tell us why you want to limit this? Of
course, I understand not getting notifications. That said, if you simply
disable calendar notifications, say, then you never even have to know that your
calendar events are on the Watch. If, however, you ever need to ask Siri on
your watch what’s next on your calendar, or you want to add the calendar to a
watch face, the option is there. Contacts are equally helpful, letting the
watch tell you, by name, who’s calling or texting. Again, you can turn all
these notifications off, but the option will be there. You can also tell Siri
on the watch to “text Pete” instead of trying to dictate a full phone number
each time. I’m just not seeing the need to completely stop data syncing, if you
can more easily silence notifications to do with the data you don’t want.

If you want the Watch to be an activity tracker, it can do that. The problem is
that all its data is constantly syncing to your iPhone. If you sign into one
account on the watch, and another on the phone, I don’t know whaat might happen
to this syncing. I also doubt you’d get your activity and health data included
in iCloud backups if your phone refuses to accept it. Finally, your actual
Watch will then be registered to a different account. That’s not a problem in
itself, but it does make things more complex if and when you have to talk to
Apple support.

Finally, I’ll say this. The Apple Watch is a very good activity tracker, no
doubt. But I can’t recommend enough that, as you get more comfortable with it,
you give its other functions a try. I love tapping my watch screen to wake it,
then using Hey Siri to text someone or control a smart home device. My phone
can be in the other room, playing media I don’t want to interrupt, hooked to a
bluetooth headset with a terrible microphone, or otherwise not convenient for
Siri control. Yet my Watch handles things just fine. It’s also nice to
customize the watch face to add the information you need, like upcoming
calendar event, weather details, a timer, commonly used apps, activity rings,
whatever you find useful. The more you explore everything the Watch has to
offer, the more you might find you like it as more than just a health tracker.
