Re: Getting a voice dream reader library on to a new device

2018-09-14 Thread Phil Halton
In the past when purchasing a new iPhone, I have always done the following:
One, back up the old phone to the cloud.
Two, restore the new phone from cloud back up.
That takes care of transferring all the voice stream files over onto the new
phone along with any other data files and app configuration’s from the old
phone.

Does anybody know if the above app is accessible with voiceover? The topic has
come up on the phone related list, mostly in conjunction with windows. But it
turns out, that this app is also available for the Mac, and it supposedly
enables you to easily move lots of stuff from your computer to your iPhone
device without using the dreaded itunes. Is it accessible?

I love the idea of in display fingerprint tech. I can totally go for
that. I heard that Samsung may put it in a device next year for sure
and it will be some new sensor they are working on. I can get behind

Mark's iPhone Prediction, and some Info on In-Display Fingerprint Technology

2018-09-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

This post consist of three parts:

In the first part, I re-post my comments, posted on Saturday, September 1,
2018, regarding this year's iPhone releases.

In the second part, I post an article from The Verge, in which a writer
describes his first experience using an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Finally, in the third part, I post an article that describes how in-display
fingerprint sensor technology works.

So, read on, and enjoy.

Part 1:
>From Mark, Posted, September 1, 2018, sent to Mac Visionaries:

". Okay, as for the upcoming iOS devices?

I think that many companies will be adopting under-the-screen fingerprint
reading technology. If Apple adds this feature to this year's phones, I'll
be delighted and will probably buy one. However, if, as I strongly suspect,
they do not include the new finger print technology and completely remove
Touch ID from the new devices, then I'll stay pat with my 8 Plus as I really
do love this phone. I strongly suspect that the 8 series will continue to
be sold for those who are not ready/willing to abandon Touch ID.

Perhaps, next year, then, the new finger print reading technology will be
ready for Apple primetime.

Just my opinion, of course.

Part 2:
I tried the first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, The Verge

I tried the first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor
By Vlad Savov

After an entire year of speculation about whether Apple or Samsung might
integrate the fingerprint sensor under the display of their flagship phones,
it is actually China's Vivo that has gotten there first. At CES 2018, I got
to grips with the first smartphone to have this futuristic tech built in,
and I was left a little bewildered by the experience.
The mechanics of setting up your fingerprint on the phone and then using it
to unlock the device and do things like authenticate payments are the same
as with a traditional fingerprint sensor. The only difference I experienced
was that the Vivo handset was slower - both to learn the contours of my
fingerprint and to unlock once I put my thumb on the on-screen fingerprint
prompt - but not so much as to be problematic. Basically, every other
fingerprint sensor these days is ridiculously fast and accurate, so with
this being newer tech, its slight lag feels more palpable.
The biggest unfulfilled promise of 2017 is becoming a reality in 2018
Vivo is using a newly announced Synaptics optical sensor, which has been in
development for years. It works by peering through the gaps between the
pixels in an OLED display (LCDs wouldn't work because of their need for a
backlight) and scanning your uniquely patterned epidermis. This is likely
the tech that Synaptics and Samsung were collaborating on for the Galaxy S8
for last year, right up until it became apparent that it wouldn't be ready
in time for the phone's release. Things are different now, as Vivo is close
to announcing this as-yet-unnamed phone properly and Synaptics is already in
mass production with the so-called Clear ID sensor.
The uncanny thing for me with this phone is how obvious and immediately
intuitive the in-display fingerprint system is. This 6-inch phone has the
minimal bezels of something like the OnePlus 5T, but it also happens to
unlock when I put my finger at the bottom of its screen. The technological
aspect is just totally invisible and, if you're not paying attention to how
challenging this is technically, it feels almost pedestrian and
unimpressive. Like, of course, that's how it always should have been.

In-Screen Fingerprint Reader Explained: Here's Everything You Need to Know

In-Screen Fingerprint Reader Explained: Here's Everything You Need to Know
By Omar Sohail

Apple's iPhone 5s started the whole smartphone biometrics saga with the
introduction of Touch ID. The fingerprint scanner element is now ubiquitous,
embedded in home buttons, mounted on the back side of mobile phones and even
placed on the side beneath the home button of handsets. Naturally, the
development of faster and more accurate fingerprint readers led to the
makings of newer ways of unlocking your smartphone.
This includes facial recognition like Face ID and something that we will be
discussing in detail today; the in-screen fingerprint reader. As we see more
high screen-to-body ratio smartphones getting released, a consequence of
this action is the where to put the fingerprint reader, which is often moved
to the back of the phone to compensate for those 'all screen' handsets.

Re: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-14 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I gave up audacity long ago as they stopped the support of later versions with
VoiceOver.
I haven’t transfered any tapes to the computer so i am not sure what would
work.
But there are some other aplications out there for the mac.
I have Audio Hijack from Roughe Amoeba and Amadeus Pro from Hairsoft.
Both are really accessible with VoiceOver.
Amadeus Pro is quite straight forward so i suggest you take a look at that.
I am not sure if there’s a demo on hairsoft.com but i think i downloaded a demo
before i bought it.

Re: Running Ubuntu in vmware fusion.

2018-09-14 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi Chris!
Yes i have actually turned Vo off as i tierferes with the speech and braille in
ubuntu.
But i can not get the consoles to come up as i would like it to.
I come to think of i f i should try option+command to see if this would work.
I don’t think so but its worth a try.
I will do some more research on this as its something i would like to be able
to do in linux.

How dual-SIM works with Apple's iPhone XS & XS Max

2018-09-14 Thread Mary Otten
I realize this feature is not out yet, even when the phones are actually in
people’s hands, but I thought some folks might like to read this. I don’t
understand why they specifically referred to the XS and the XS max, because
Apple says that the X r also supports the dual sim. Just color me confused.

How dual-SIM works with Apple's iPhone XS & XS Max
AppleInsider

One of the new features of the iPhone XS and XS Max is dual-SIM support, which
will let people wield two phone numbers on the same device. Here's how it works
in countries where eSIM is available.

Setup

That's the first catch, of course: only 10 countries support Apple's eSIMs,
namely Austria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India,
Spain, the U.K., and the U.S. Even then carriers must offer compatibility too,
and initially the only supporting U.S. carriers for the XS and XS Max will be
AT, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Sprint is planning to back the technology, but
doesn't yet have a date.

iPhone owners will also need an update to iOS 12 coming "later this year," and
a carrier's official app or special QR code.

Many people will already have a nano-SIM card from their main carrier, in which
case adding a second number involves adding a plan to the eSIM. If using a
carrier app, the process is as simple as using that app to buy a plan — in the
case of a QR code, you have to open the Settings app, tap Cellular, then "Add
Cellular Plan." You'll be presented with an option to scan your code.

Notably you'll be able to use the eSIM in place of a nano-SIM, whether for a
single account or several, but you won't be able to have more than one eSIM
account active at a time. For most people then, the best option will be to have
a nano-SIM primary.

Once multiple plans are running, you'll be prompted to label them. There are
preset options like "Primary," "Secondary," "Business," and "Travel," or you
can simply create your own. To change a label later, you'll have to go into the
Settings app's Cellular menu, tap the number you want to change, then Cellular
Plan Label.

You'll also be asked to set a default number, which is critical since it will
be the only one supporting the full range of cellular services. Secondary
numbers can normally only field voice and SMS.

The exception is an option to relegate a secondary line to data only, which may
be useful for traveling — this will let people call or message you at your main
number but avoid exorbitant roaming fees with a local SIM card. Be warned that
in addition to voice and SMS, iMessage and FaceTime will still go to your
primary, which could rack up data fees.

Making calls

Once you've got things up and running, you can switch numbers before dialing in
the Phone app by tapping the current one directly from the keypad, or else
hitting the "i" button first when you're browsing Favorites. Picking an SMS
number is similar, but you tap the number after starting a new conversation and
selecting a contact.

Changing the line for iMessage and FaceTime is more complicated, as you have to
go into Settings, Messages, and then iMessage & FaceTime Line. The selected
choice is permanent until you reverse it.

There's one last thing to note, which is iOS 12's status bar info. You'll
normally only see signal strength for one line at a time, but you can see how a
secondary is doing by opening up Control Center.

The first wave of preorders for the iPhone XS and XS Max is underway.
Quick-trigger buyers should see their orders delivered Sept. 21.

Hi.

I have a mini with two drives. One of them is Bootcamped. I cannot perform
a backup or system image. I get a shadow copy not available. Is this a
function of Bootcamp? How can I back up my Bootcamp partition?

Thanks.

Re: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-14 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply. To answer your questions:

Yes, I do have an audio device installed on the VM machine. It’s HDAudio. The
problem is that when I go to Sound Settings in Windows, the only input device I
see is a Microphone, no line-in jack. So Narrator, even JAWS for that matter,
does come up just fine. When I’m in the Windows VM, it’s a bit tricky if I want
to toggle between Windows and Mac OS, but I’m getting the hang of it and I’m
sure it’ll get even easier the more I use it.

Windows in the Bootcamp environment works fine, and there I even do see the
line-in jack. The interesting thing about the Bootcamp environment is that I
have three different output choices, one for speakers, one for headphones, and
one for digital audio. In the stand-alone VM, I only have speakers. What’s also
puzzling to me is that if I create a VM by importing my Bootcamp partition, it
says that everything is copied over, but that doesn’t seem to be the case if I
don’t have all the device choices. I would stay with running in the Bootcamp
environment, but it’s a pain to have to reboot out of Bootcamp any time I want
to go back to Mac OS.

I hope this all makes sense.

Pete

Volume wasn't mentioned, as far as I recall. The quality of sound was said to
be better, with no specifics given. The focus was on the stereo separation;
Apple claims that stereo sounds much better in the XS, with both hardware and
AI helping to improve the experience. I'm looking forward to trying that
particular feature in person, but it's not enough to make me want to upgrade.

RE: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Pete,

I see you said the vm tools were installed from what you could see,

Have you checked to see that you have an audio device installed also in the vm?

I'll have to check my work machine to remember where this is but without an
audio device you wont hear anything.

Can you even get narrator working in the vm?
And do you have any issues with the windows machine when running in the
windows boot camp environment?

Subject: Audacity Tutorials

Hi,

I’m still struggling with trying to get windows under VMWare Fusion to see the
line-in jack on my late 2014 Mac mini. One person in the group suggested I
double-check that VMWare Tools was installed, and it is, but still no line-in
jack. It looks like the only sound device that comes with windows under VMWare
is HDAudio, and for some reason it’s not picking up the line-in jack. When I
installed Windows under Bootcamp, I had a Cirrus Logic CS4208 (AB 108) driver,
and the line-in jack showed up just fine. I’m trying to get hold of VMWare
support, but to me it looks like I have to have a purchased copy of Fusion
before they’ll talk to me. Everything else I need to do in Windows can be done
with a VMWare machine on my Mac, so I really would much prefer not to have to
reboot every time I want to do tape transfers.

So if I can’t use VMWare Windows, I’m looking at Audacity 2.1.1. I understand
this earlier version does work pretty well with VoiceOver. Has anyone used
Audacity to transfer recordings from an external tape recorder of any kind? If
not, have you used any other software on the Mac? Finally, if anyone has used
Audacity, are there any tutorials out there besides the documentation that
comes with it?

Thanks so much for any help,
Pete De Vasto

RE: A Tested Duel SIm Solution For Iphone 6

2018-09-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
I don't know what it's called or how it works but I have heard of something
that you can get I believe from ali express that allows you to plug in to an
iPhone and have 2 / dual sim cards running off your iPhone.

I can't say more than that because I don't know.

Hi alll:

tried any Unit that can do this and it’s app is accessible?
I found something called SocBlue but do not know if this is ok or not. here in
Egypt we do not have an oportunity to try and return it back, so.
Your Recommendations are much Appreciated.

Thanks in advance
