RE: What Iphone to chooce?

2018-11-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Anders,

Is screen / picture quality an issue for you?

If not then take the iPhone XR, they have shown to have better battery life
than all other iPhones currently that includes the 8's and the newer XS range.

The processor is better and the screen is slightly larger,
If screen is something you want then the 8 and 8Plus have better screen
resolution
Otherwise there isn't a lot and either way your going to get a great device,
The 8 will give you 3d touch which the xr wont. The 8 has a home button the xr
doesn't.

The xr should have esim abilitys next year.

So in other words, it’s a case of what do you need and what do you want?

Either way they are good devices the xr will just last slightly longer.

The X R, without a case, for me, feels rather slippery. With a case, though, it
feels great and solid, and the battery life is just amazing, even when using it
with Wifi, Bluetooth, location services, and background app refresh on. If you
don't need all that, one user has said that he gets a day and a half of Wifi.
With it, I get a full day of life.

Hi Mary,

Get him to try this

Subscribe to iTunes Match. Open iTunes on a Mac or PC. At the top of the iTunes
window, click Store. Under Music Quick Links at the right side of the window,
click iTunes Match. Click the Subscribe button.

Hope that helps.

Re: new mac user

2018-11-28 Thread Maurice Mines
Good evening, word can produce high-quality documents. If you need a
natively done Microsoft Word document it would be advisable and
cost-effective for you to use office 365. It is completely compatible
with the Mac I use it personally, and I’ve had no problems.

Although pages does right in word format it is not completely the word
format. There are some slight differences. I hope this addresses your
question?

Re: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

Thank you for this information. Also, thank you to others who replied.

This solution fixed at least getting the program launched. I had to going to
privacy and then accessibility and indicate that I wanted to allow VMware to
control my computer. Then when I launched VMware fusion, I had to go allow the
extension.

I am creating my first virtual machine so we'll see how that goes.
Again thank you to everyone who replied here.

Subject: Accessible Youtube to mp3 converter for the Mac?

Hey all,
Usually when I need some audio from Youtube, I have no problem using Loopback
to record from Safari into Garage Band. Now, though, I'm working on a radio
demo and I need to download songs, and I figure it will take forever to record
each individual song only for me to end up using a 3-second clip.
So, can anyone recommend a good way to download Youtube videos? I used to use
anything2mp3.com but that doesn't work for me anymore.

IF it supports batch conversion and SoundCloud URL's, that's a huge plus.

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for sharing that link. It looks like a great website. However, when I
try and convert it gives me an error that says converting music from Youtube is
not possible in my region. I’m in California. Where are you from, by chance? If
it works for you, perhaps I can use a VPN.

Re: What Iphone to chooce?

2018-11-28 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

the 8's battery life is good, but the XR's is better. The XR is heavier than
other models, but is an excellent phone. If you want the phone to last longer
before upgrading, I'd go with the XR, as long as the price doesn't put it out
of range for you.

Re: What Iphone to chooce?

2018-11-28 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Anders,
I got the 8+ in February and am quite pleased with it. Battery life
seems good but I charge it nightly so it gets backed up as well. My
previous phone was the 5 so at first the size took getting used to but
it's perfect.

I've started working with a braille display connected to the iPhone
and so far its been a good experience.

Never used Android , never had any reason to switch.

Re: What Iphone to chooce?

2018-11-28 Thread 'Devin Prater' via MacVisionaries
The X R, without a case, for me, feels rather slippery. With a case, though, it
feels great and solid, and the battery life is just amazing, even when using it
with Wifi, Bluetooth, location services, and background app refresh on. If you
don't need all that, one user has said that he gets a day and a half of Wifi.
With it, I get a full day of life.

Re: Having problems sharing a disk between 2 Macs

2018-11-28 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
hi,

File Sharing only needs enabled on the iMac if it is the device hosting the
shared folders/volumes. Security-wise, I'd suggest that you make it visible to
specific people, not the entire world. You can make it so that your user on
the iMac is the owner of the folder, and you just sign in with those
credentials from the MBA to gain access. Remember that a drive needs to be
formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled) to work properly as a Time Machine
drive. The sharing part of this is relatively straight forward as explained
above, but the sharing of it as a Time Machine location is not as easy. I've
never used a regular shared volume as a Time Machine location as I usually use
an Airport Extreme or MacOS Server to create the Time Machine locations. It
may work just fine, I've just never tried it.

Re: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

2018-11-28 Thread Maurice Mines
Good morning, I might have an idea as to what your problem might be.
Are you running OS X Mojave? Just salute you know if you are running
the current version of VMware, you have to go into system preferences
and make sure that in the privacy and/or security settings that VMware
is permitted to access those resources a.k.a. the extension for VMware
needs to be allowed to run. If the item is not chocked your Mac forbids
the program to be run because did use it as a potential security risk
when it is not. Give that a shot? And I think your problem will
hopefully go away.

Does this generally work and if so any thoughts on what might be up?

Re: likely silly apple product buy question?

2018-11-28 Thread Arnold Schmidt
The following is only my opinion. Obviously, the damage to your IPhone had
absolutely nothing to do with any manufacturing fault or defect, so most
manufacturers would say, "that's too bad." They wouldn't fix it under any
warranty, not even Apple care. And you are saying they offered you the chance
to buy Apple Care after they knew the circumstances of the damage, then fix it
under Apple Care? That is the most generous warranty coverage I have ever heard
of from a manufacturer. I hope you grabbed it before they came to their senses
and changed their mind.

Re: likely silly apple product buy question?

2018-11-28 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

The standard Apple warranty does not cover user caused damage. Most standard
warranties do not. Yes, AppleCare is required to cover such damage. This is
normal practice with most electronics. Manufacturer defects or problems with
software/hardware are covered, but if you spill your coffee on your laptop
keyboard, for example, standard warranty does not cover the repairs.

I'm not interested in getting into a back and forth, but I have spoken directly
with business owners who sell Apple and other technology, and the markup for
the retailer is nowhere near the values you've stated. Yes, I agree that those
percentages are normal in many other product lines, but I'll stand by my
statement that those percentages are not the case for Apple hardware sold by
third party retailers.

hi,

Specifically with Apple Care, you have a point. Whereas, the one year warranty
provided by Apple is honoured no matter which authorized vender sold the Apple
product. While the mark-up you state is normal in the retail business, my
sources tell me that the retailer is not marking up the Apple hardware to that

Re: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

2018-11-28 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Kelly,

I’ve struggled with VMWare Fusion lots as well, but do have it going pretty
much all the time now. The one trick I’ve noticed you have to do is toggle back
and forth in and out of your machine’s screen while it’s starting up. I hope I
can explain this correctly, here goes:

When your machine starts, you’ll eventually hear VO say “suspend this guest
operating system”. At that point, press Command+control+f. You’ll probably hear
VO say something like space with applications followed by whatever is currently
running, like finder, Mail, Messages or whatever. Press Control+command+f
again, and you should hear VO say “Space with the name of your Windows machine
full-screen”. At that point, you know you are in the VMWare window. Press
Control+G to give keyboard focus to the VM machine. Oh yeah, and the keystroke
to start Narrator won’t work, because VO is picking up the Control+Windows
combination as its command. I normally do Windows+R, then type Narrator, and it
does come up. Then, to get out of Narrator, I have to alt-tab to the Narrator
Settings window, and when I press Alt+F4, Narrator does exit. If you can get to
the point where you can in fact install JAWS, it does work pretty nicely, by
the way. I started out with VMWare 10, and my USB devices, including my Focus
40 Blue, connected just fine. But then I tried upgrading to VMWare Version 11,
and for some reason I couldn't get any of my USB devices going, so I had to go
back to version 10.

I hope this isn’t confusing, and that maybe others can chime in with
clarifications or other thoughts. Good luck and I hope you can get it going.

Wish that it is true about Apple and there warranties.
If the store sells it with applecare. Then Apple will fix it and if not then
you will have to get applecare on your own.
I know this from getting my iPhone 8 from T-mobile. They only gave a not
working out of box return if phone was fisically broke.
I had to get applecare myself.
Now as far as the big drop in discounts they still make a profit because the
markup is around 3 to 500% for sales.
Never think a store loses money with discounts.
Just because a product states a sale only means it is for sale. The discount is
still just a mine game.

Did you install the VM tools? You have to begin this process outside the

RE: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Anders,
The starter kit, with room stat and bridge, costs about £200. Radiator valves
cost about £60 each but you don't need those straight away.
Unfortunately I don't know about heat pump compatibility especially not outside
the UK. However, as far as the electronics are concerned it can function in the
same way as an old fashioned dial stat – just a glorified on/off switch really.
If your heat pump can take a dial stat it can probably take Tado.

Hi!
What did you pay for that one?
I don’t think this can be connected right away to my Heat pump.

Hi,
For smart heating I use a system from a company called Tado. I purchased it
because of its Homekit integration but actually, I find I very rarely have to
use the Homekit side of the operation because it all just works.
The basic setup is a smart thermostat. However, you can also add smart radiator
valves to individual rooms. The system geolocates via the Tado app and reduces
the set point of the thermostat gradually as you move further and further away
from home. Critically, it also raises the temperature gradually as you return,
so if your house is particularly cold and you're far away, the heating will
switch on long before you arrive home.
Multiple users are supported and geolocation is based on the user closest to
the house.
The system also has integration with weather forecast data and builds a model
of how quickly the house warms up and cools down so that, for example, instead
of setting the heating to come on at 7:00 AM, you set the house to be warm by
7:00 AM. On a cold day this may trigger the heating to start up at 6:00 AM, but
on a warmer day it might not come on until 6:45 AM.
Setup is an absolute doddle as all devices have a QR code on them, which you
just scan into the app and let it do its thing. Only snag is that I'm not sure
how compatible it is with US heating. If you can get it, though, I couldn't
recommend it highly enough.

Thanks, Jeff. Just curious, do you control the thermostat through any of these
interfaces? We currently have a nest, but I'm thinking I'd like to have a
thermostat I can control through Siri. Currently looking at the Ecobee3.

Hi Donna,

All of the products I use work with Homekit They also work with Google Home.
I have both systems in my house, so I wanted cross compatibility.

The iHome ISS50 is a 5 in 1 sensor. It can report back on things such as:

temperature,
humidity,
motion,
sound and,
light.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you can
monitor through the iHome Control app.

More information at:

I use the iHome Control app, Philips Hue and Home for my needs and find all of
them accessible.

Hi Jeff,

thanks for this. These are some of the devices I am considering. Are they all

Also, what is an iHome ISS 50?
Thanks,

Hi Donna,

I am using a bunch of Philips Hue lights which work with a bridge. I also have

I’m hoping to get an iHome ISS50 5 in 1 sensor for Christmas.
