CleanMyMac worth the price

2019-03-02 Thread Raymond Foret Jr
Okay,

I couldn’t care less if I sound like a commercial here. But, fact of the
matter is this. I bought CleanMyMac and it’s totally worth the $39.00 I paid
for it. It’s made my this here dinosaur of a mid 2009 Mac book Pro a lot
snappier than it was before. Mail is opening and behaving much much faster,
Safari is both opening and browsing much much faster than before and overall, I
can’t say enough about how much faster this thing is. I’m just wondering if
there’s any way to fix the time it takes to boot up from either restart or
having been shut down. It used to only take about 40 seconds now it takes
about a minute and 30 seconds. The only thing I’ve got starting up at the
beginning is Drop Box. That routs to a spinning 4TB drive but the Drop Box
partition is only 1TB on that disk. Anything I might be overlooking? Oh,
needless to say, I cannot upgrade to Mohavi because this here Mac is way too
old.

Sent from the first computer with built-in screen reader access for the blind:

Sincerely,

The constantly barefooted Ray

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread Pete Nalda
I like my XR quite a bit. It’s only a little bigger than the X, and yet, way
more comfortable to hold than my 7 plus was. Face ID is a bit finicky, but when
it works, it’s really very elegant!

Hey Simon,

I like being on the second phone of the cycle, because that's the phone that
gets the faster processor. And, I'm thinking that if I trade in my X and
upgrade now, it'll still be cheaper than buying a new model next fall.

RE: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

That's a great price however if your still paying off the x would you not be
better off waiting for 6 months for the next device to come out?

I've also got the X and even though the xs and xr sound like great phones, I
couldn't see any reason for now to update,
So I'm waiting to see what the next version brings.
Just a thought

Subject: thoughts on iPhone XR?

Hi all,

I know that some of you out there have the iPhone XR. How do you like it?
Anything you don't like?

I had planned to skip upgrading this year, but I just got an offer from Apple
to buy an XR for $249 if I trade in my iPhone X. It's tempting. And it'd be a
lot cheaper than whatever upgrading when next fall's phones come out will be,
so I'm kind of thinking about it.

One specific thing I'm curious about is the improved face ID. I don't like it
on the X, but have read that it is faster on the newer phones. Does anyone
have experience with this? Also, how is the feel? I've read that it's wider,
and that's something I don't really need.
TIA,
Donna

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mary,

Thanks! This is helpful.

As it turns out, the Apple promo won't be good for me b/c I'd still have to pay
off my VZ balance on the X. But, it does look like trading in my X might be
advantageous, so I'm exploring that.

I went to the VZ store today to look at the phones. I do like the smaller
size of the S, but completely agree with you that it isn't worth the higher
price tag. So if I do go through with this, it'll be an R.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.
Cheers,
Donna

How to take a screen shot on iPhone 5S using VoiceOver

2019-03-02 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am using an iPhone 5S running IOS 12.1.4.
I am trying to report a bug to an App developer. They want me to send them a
screen shot of the problem screen.
I do not have any screen shot app.
So how do I take a screen shot using VoiceOver?
Many thanks….

Regarding the calendar, I have been having trouble getting it to add dates with

I think that's what I'm doing is going to the view menu and changing it there.
in the view menu there's "sort by" I press vo-space on that and then I find the
options. it's always on attachments. if I arrow down once I find "date" I can
press enter or vo-space on that and it says "checked" but it's not permanent.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Donna,
I do have the XR, and I do like it. I especially like the great battery life. I
can’t see any big deal about getting the 10 S or the max except cost. Not worth
it. If you use 3D Touch a lot, then that could be important. But since I don’t,
there was no downside for me I came from a 7+, which is a larger phone of
course. The hardest thing to get used to it for me is the bezels or lack there
of. But with your 10, you are already used to that. I can’t compare the older
face ID with the newer one, since I have no experience with the old one. I
don’t have any problem with it, and it is pretty fast. I still prefer touch ID,
but this does work. So I would say go for it.

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-03-02 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Janina,
I should have read all new mail. Usually I do. (smiles) While adding
my Epson in Windows, it brought up a list of almost 400 models. Good
grief. And my model was not included. Solved that with a driver
installation. The Mac was much easier.

I think now that the printer is connected to the router I should try
sending print jobs from my iPhone. Just in case I need to print text
messages or emails for Judge Judy. She loves that. :)

I will be looking at these printers and decide what I want and save
pennies. Appreciate your input.

Hi, E.T.

I have no reason to think Brother has broken the accessibility of their
user interfaces, though I could be wrong, of course. The HP models
others have mentioned in this thread also sounds interesting.

Here's what I know from personal experience about HP. They build lots of
printers, many models. Some of them are wonderful. Others are dogs.

Moral of the story is that I cannot swear that every Brother model will
be accessible, so protect your ability to return for a refund--just in
case, even if there's some kind of restocking fee.

I hear you about limited funds. I've been there, my friend!

I can tell you that I can access all configuration functions on my printer via
browser, even an ancient
browser like Lynx. However, I have been unable to get scanning to work
via the network connection, though I haven't tried very hard because I
have another scanner closer to where I sit in my office. The printer is
where my sighted assistant sits when she's here.

I expect that connecting to the device via USB would make scanning
trivial, but I particularly want it network connected as I sometimes
send print jobs to it from afar. I particularly like that it supports IPv6,
because that makes it easy for me to access it securely from afar. You may not
be
into IPv6 yet. However, rather than define NAT for it, should you have
this need, I would suggest checking out IPv6 instead. Apple, Microsoft,
Linux, Android all support it very well these days, so it's only a
question of whether you can get IPv6 from your Internet service
provider.

My model was classified as a "small workgroup multi function device." In
the early days of owning it, the default drivers didn't work with it,
but the driver for the next, slightly larger Brother worked just fine,
including for printing graphics. That issue has been fixed for some time
now, though.

Best,

Janina

Fax? Who uses fax anymore! Mine isn't hooked up, but the machine
does support fax. It's all the same technology after all.

PS: Mine is the model 9840DW. I got it from Newegg about 10 years ago as
an open box resale for $150. In the early days I had some issues with
Linux drivers, but no longer. I've never had issues on Macintosh or
Windows with this machine, and it works with my Android just as well.
It's a network printer, so I share it out on my network via my OpenWRT
router.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

thanks, John. the size is one of the things that worries me - I like the
smaller phones. :) May have to go to Verizon and see just how much bigger it
actually is. I'd probably rather have the S, but I do like this price a lot
better.

Navigate to the table and turn tracking off. Use the VoiceOver cursor to read
the list. You won't get any alerts. If you VO Space on anything, that'll select

thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

TIA,
Donna

Re: Making a PDF Manual accessible

2019-03-02 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
It all depends on how the PDF is created. Very possibly your only option
is OCR. This can also be problematic, though, if the buttons you're
supposed to press show up in the PDF as little in line pictures of the
button. Hopefully you have a sufficiently powerful OCR to handle that.

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-03-02 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries

Best,

Janina

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-03-02 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
BT will only work in the printer's environs.

Mine is connected via ethernet cable to my router. My router also serves
as my wireless access point (WAP) for wifi in my home.

Result: I can access my printer anywhere in my home, even beyond where
BT would work.

Also, I can access my printer from across the planet, should I so
choose.
