Re: Windows 10 install on MacBookAir 2013

2019-03-03 Thread 'Dan' via MacVisionaries
Hi Simon,

Headphones connected directly to the Mac should work just fine. I did this on a
MBP mid 2014 and it worked just fine. You will also need a usb drive as well
for these older machines.
After the boot camp part of the install switches over to the windows installer,
and after about half a minute or so, you can activate narrator and away you go.

Windows 10 install on MacBookAir 2013

2019-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi List,

I've got a mid 2013 mac book air that I'm going to have to completely reimage
including a bootcamp windows 10 1809 partition.

I know that on the 2015 mac books etc you don't need to use a flash drive for
the windows installation drivers etc,
But on a 2013 device will windows / bootcamp let you run Narrator via USB audio
or headphones if you start it up once windows starts it's installation process?

I've just done this on a 2015 MBP without any sighted assistance at all,
I wondered if anyone has had the same luck on an earlier Mac Book device?

Cheers,

Simon F

RE: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna and Anders,

Yeah I believe that the XR is a size between the XS and XS Max,
But the screen and camera are the big difference, For the price they've
offered you Donna I'd say go for it

I guess to someone with average male sized hands the size isn't bad,
But it's all an individuals view on things.

Good luck with your choice.

Hi!
Well, so far i do like it more than my old Android phone.
BUt yeah i wish it could been smaller.
I sometimes have problems unlocking the phone with faceId as its to fast.
They say this beast is having good battery power and yes it has but it could be
a lot better i think in regards to how big it is and the Lcd display.
But i am no engineering so what do i know?
Its a hole lot better than my Iphone Se though.
There is no stereo speaker which from my perspective is not a problem but you
should be aware of that if you’re getting used to that.
But the sound of VoiceOver is really great even though i think it sounds a bit
boxy or something like that.
You’re always welcome to ask questions about it if you have any.

Apple's Siri Shortcuts help boost health and fitness routines, Mac Daily News

2019-03-03 Thread M. Taylor
MacDailyNews - Friday, March 1, 2019 at 9:46 AM
Apple's Siri Shortcuts help boost health and fitness routines
Starting and maintaining health and fitness routines gets even easier as
more apps offer Siri Shortcuts, joining the thousands that have integrated
shortcuts since their introduction with iOS 12.
Using powerful on-device intelligence, Siri Shortcuts help people get things
done faster across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod, AirPods and CarPlay,
allowing them to easily access and use their favorite apps with just a tap
or by asking Siri.
Track Performance and Enhance Training
New Siri Shortcuts provide performance stats in real time and help make
training easier. Skiers hitting the slopes this season can use Siri
Shortcuts on the Snoww app to start a run (just say, "Hey Siri, let's ski!")
and get information about the speed, elevation drops and distance traveled
by simply raising their wrist to trigger Siri on Apple Watch ("Hey Siri, how
was my run?").

The Snoww app now integrates Siri Shortcuts, so skiers can start a run by
simply saying: "Hey Siri, let's ski!"

In HomeCourt's latest update, users can ask Siri to start a dribble workout
on iPad or iPhone. And with the Nike Run Club app, runners can use Siri to
start a run and get proactive suggestions based on running habits.
Monitor Vitals
Third-party health devices are integrating Siri Shortcuts into their apps
for easier data retrieval and control, whether at home or on the go.
The QardioArm smart blood pressure monitor now lets users ask Siri to
remotely check in on family members. For example, people who care for an
aging parent can ask, "Hey Siri, what's mom's blood pressure?" and get that
information wherever they are, right on their iPhone or Apple Watch.
Build Healthy Habits
Whether watching your diet, getting enough sleep, breaking a bad habit or
remembering to take medications and vitamins, Siri Shortcuts help keep track
while on the go with any Apple device. With apps like Streaks, WaterMinder
and Yazio, users can track daily habits and see how long they can keep them
going by asking Siri to log almost any type of activity, such as hydration,
exercise, flossing, sugar and caffeine intake, even walking the dog.

Siri Shortcuts help users track daily habits on the Streaks app by asking
Siri to log activities from hydration and exercise to taking vitamins and
walking the dog.

With AutoSleep, Siri Shortcuts track sleep quality with Apple Watch or
iPhone, providing information when asked about hours slept, quality of
sleep, deep sleep, updates on reaching a sleep goal, latest bedtime and
more.
With the Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, people with diabetes
can better track and manage blood glucose levels by simply asking Siri,
"What's my glucose level?"
Personalize Routines With the Shortcuts App
For those who want to go further in customizing a full fitness routine using
Siri, the Shortcuts app allows users to build their own multi-step shortcuts
that include actions from multiple apps to create powerful automations. For
example, users can create a shortcut telling Siri, "Heading to the gym."
Upon arrival, start the workout with an app like Nike Run Club, cue a
workout playlist and enable Do Not Disturb until leaving the gym. A how-to
for using the Shortcuts app can be found at
support.apple.com/guide/shortcuts.
Based on how customers use their devices, Siri will suggest simple, useful
shortcuts right when needed on the Lock screen or in Search. Additionally,
users can look for the "Add to Siri" button in the apps they use, or go to
Settings > Siri & Search > All Shortcuts to see which apps offer shortcuts
and to set a personal phrase to run them with.
Source: Apple Inc.
MacDailyNews Take: Yes, Apple's Shortcuts app can now open Nike+ Run Club
app.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-03 Thread Pete Nalda
Both speakers are on the bottom on either side of the lightening port. I think
I heard the top speaker is made the left or right speaker in landscape mode.
But you do get decent separation in portrait mode as well.

Re: Getting Older Version Of File Using Time Machine Under Mojave

2019-03-03 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Anne,

Your instructions were helpful, and I did get to the version of the file I
wanted. Part of my problem may have been that I needed to wait longer for Time
Machine to completely load. The other interesting thing is that I have a
keyboard with a number pad, and was using Numpad Commander keys to move around.
They didn’t work, but when I used the VO plus arrow keys, it did. Anyhow,
problem solved and thanks again for the quick help!

Re: Getting Older Version Of File Using Time Machine Under Mojave

2019-03-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Pete,
Navigate to the file in question then launch Time machine.
Use the Window chooser to select Time Machine Controls.
You should find the Previous button and to the right of that a vertical slider
showing the date and time of each backup.
Interact with the slider and navigate to the version you want to restore.
Stop interacting and click the Restore button.
I’m using the latest version of Mojave so I can’t imagine why you’re not seeing
the same controls as I am.
Cheers,

Anne

Thanks, Anders. That's strange about it not having a stereo speaker. I'm glad
you mentioned it, I just assumed that would come on all the phones. I have
sort of gotten used to it, guess I'll have to think about how much that matters.

Thanks for responding.

Getting Older Version Of File Using Time Machine Under Mojave

2019-03-03 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi all,

I seem to remember this having come up before, but didn’t pay attention because
I didn’t need to. Now, however, I’m trying to recover an older version of a
file using Time Machine, and I can’t figure out how to get to an earlier
version. It’s in my Documents folder. I can navigate to the file OK, and can
start Time Machine, but when I go to the Window Chooser menu and bring up the
Time Machine controls window, all VO seems to see is the Previous button,
nothing else. And when I try to press the button, nothing seems to happen. Does
anyone have suggestions on how I can get this to work?

Thanks so much,
Pete De Vasto

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-03 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello Donna.

I have a friend who has the iPhone eggs are, and when he showed me, I didn’t
like it. For a start, it was too big for me and much heavier than the iPhone X
which I have. I’m not sure what the phone is if it’s a eight or 10 r or
something else.

Kawal.
