Using My iPad, More and More

2019-06-12 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Well, I've had my iPad Pro, 10.5 with the Apple Smart keyboard for a couple
of months now.

At first, I found it somewhat difficult to allocate certain tasks to it that
could not be done, or in some cases, more easily done on my beloved iPhone 8
Plus.

However, as time has passed I have discovered that I prefer performing some
tasks on iPad more than on iPhone.

For example, I definitely enjoy using Twitter, Facebook and other social
media such as Yelp on iPad, especially in conjunction with the Apple Smart
keyboard. Also, the TV Guide Mobile app is fabulous on iPad.

Apps such as Skype work well on iPad and I love the larger display as it
brings video calls up close and personal.

While I continue to listen to audio book, primarily on iPhone, I enjoy
reading eBooks on iPad with the larger display.

The battery power is so much better on iPad than on iPhone that I delegate
more battery draining tasks to iPad.

My point is that while there is some cross-over between iPad and iPhone, I
am definitely finding a groove for both in my digital online world.

Are there some tasks you prefer on iPad rather than iPhone?

I look forward to all replies.

Mark

Question for Apple TV users regarding sound bar

2019-06-12 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
In the past, I have had a lot of trouble with sound bars not playing nicely
with voiceover, in that, when you were looking around, the first several
syllables of voiceover audio would go missing. If sound was playing through the
sound bar already, such as music or TV program, there was not a problem. I did
finally find a sound bar from LG a few years ago which solved this problem. But
I am considering an upgrade, and don’t want to go through the hassle again. So
I’m curious what quality sound bars are folks using these days with Apple TV
where a voiceover works as it should, that is no audio is cut off, even when no
other sounds are playing?

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-12 Thread 'Danny Keys' via MacVisionaries
Hello,
First off.
I love these speakers. They really do what I want. I’ll be using them both in
OS 10 and Windows 10 under bootcamp.
Crazy sounds. For $30, the apeakers do ok.
I did somplaying around with the EQ in Mac iTunes and again, with some of my
music, darn good for the price.

 ordered this from Amazon.

 It should be here tomorrow.

they cost around $30 US. so the reason I got these was because the USB

 Thus only using one connection.

Will be interesting to see how these things work, I sure hope they do a

Encrypt.me accessibility update

2019-06-12 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’ve posted before about VPN app called encrypt.me & its
accessibility. I shared my communication with the developer, Terry Myers,
who’s been very helpful & understanding of our needs. Following his & his team
commitment to improve accessibility of encrypt.me apps on
all platforms, he’s just updated me by saying the following;
"The next release going into QA has a slightly improved accessibility feature.

You'll be able to enable/disable Encrypt.me using Siri, on
iOS & Mac.

Monochrome is coming - we're going to work on that along side the new dark mode
in iOS13.”

Encrypt.me applications are available for iOS, Android,
mac platforms. In fact, I have iOS versions & mac apps and they are fairly
accessible anyway but I thought I’d make Terry aware that we exist and that it
is important to keep us in mind, and his response was tremendously positive.
Encrypt.me is a subscription VPN but it’s fairly
affordable.

Andrew

Re: New router or not?

2019-06-12 Thread John JD Denning
You definitely should consider a new router. I looked it Manny and went with he
ubiquityAmplifi HD. It supports very high speeds it’s a quality router and for
a good price. And you do all of its set up and control via an iPhone app. Or
web interface but I haven’t tried that. There are many good routers on the
market right now. For me I just felt this was the best mix of features, price,
and from a company that has a very good track record and producing commercial
Wi-Fi equipment.

I have chosen to use certain names for some boxes such as Junk and
Trash. Under the Smart Mailboxes however, I have Deleted Messages or
Spam. I cannot get rid of these, I get an error 1030. Is there a reason
why this is? I am using 3 email accounts and set Mailbox Behavior for each.

Re: New router or not?

2019-06-12 Thread Mary Otten
I can’t answer the question about open VPN. But I can’t say that the airport
extreme is definitely out of date. I had an airport extreme, and last year, I
replaced it with a mesh system, and the difference was amazing. I get solid
signal throughout my house. Wi-Fi speeds have dramatically increased. We don’t
have giga giga bit like what you’re going to have. But at least I am now
getting what I am paying for from my cable provider. The system I bought was a
Netgear Orby. It has one main router and two satellite. If you have an
apartment, you probably don’t need that. But getting something with better
throughput will certainly serve you well.

it has a jack and a complementary 3.5 mm male to male cord for other

 ordered this from Amazon.

 It should be here tomorrow.

they cost around $30 US. so the reason I got these was because the USB

 Thus only using one connection.

Will be interesting to see how these things work, I sure hope they do a
 good job.

New router or not?

2019-06-12 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
We’re getting fibre connection at 1000 Mbit here in my apartment and i want to
make use of that as much as possible.
So i will be connecting my airport extreme to the new connection.
However i am wondering if the airport extreme is out of date as a good router
and if i should get me a new one instead?
If i get a new router then support for OpenVpn is a must.
So i ask if someone here can give me some advice?
Thanks in advance.
Note that the interface for a new router of course has to be VoiceOver friendly.
The airport utility is one of the best i’ve seen so far.
I know that there are routers with Unix interfaces, but any tips are welcome.

Thanks.

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-12 Thread B G
My apologies if below content strays off-topic. i heard this a short
while ago and thought it would be a fun way of testing the quality of
your speakers. granted it is Youtube and therefore not your CD player
(golly, giving away my age now in this age of streaming audio) but it
should be sufficient to get a measure of the depth and range. Here is
the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU5rpnBxZnU

Awaiting your findings with bated breath.

 Hello,
I'm also looking for good quality speakers for the mac mini.
I am attempting to find USB speakers. Not just USB powered, but also
using the USB connection for audio as well, not the 3.5 MM jack.
I have found external sound cards. I've also found many USB powered
speakers but they still use the 3.5 MM jack for the audio. Not what I
 want.
 I'm still looking.
 Any suggestions?
