Re: Keystroke to Insert Time/Date into Mail, TextEdit, Pages, Numbers

2019-09-06 Thread Dave Carlson
Don’t know where that idea evolved. I have not gotten it even close. The
instructions I sent out were copied from the web site that E.T. suggested. I
was simply showing him what I was wable to read on the screen, and the mystery
text contained in an image file (.PGN) I had to use OCR to render. It is
clearly not exactly correct, since the resolution of the image file was pretty
poor.

I’m open to suggestions from anyone else who can go to that web page and figure
out all the steps.

Hahaha... it works!!!

Here it is. All it takes is a single Action, to run a little Applescript.
1) In Automator, create a new "Quick Action".
2) Add a single "Run Applescript" action, like this:

Workflow receives
Input is   entire selection
Image
Color
jos   a Output replaces selected text
in
k Run AppleScript •
on run {t1 IpuL, paran   }
set thedate to (curren   ) as
tell application "System Events"
keystroke thed
end tell
end --
3) Save it - I called it "type the date", you can call it whatever you
like.
4) In System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->Services, locate the
"type the date" service, and add a shortcut. I used
"command-control-option-D", again you can use anything you like.

That's it. I switched to Mail, pressed the shortcut. The very first
time, a dialog appeared telling me that Mail wanted to control
Automator. I allowed.
It just works. Type command-control-option-D, and it types the date
and time.
You will get the same dialog when you use it with an application for
the first time only.

You also need to have any such application allowed to "control your
computer" in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Accessibility.

If not, you will get a "... is not allowed to send keystrokes" alert.

In-screen Touch ID potentially signals a backward step ahead, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-09-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

As I am one of those insane people who is waiting for Apple to re-introduce
Touch-ID back into the iPhone, before purchasing a new model, I found the
following article interesting.

Mark.

In-screen Touch ID potentially signals a backward step ahead
By Ben Lovejoy

In-screen Touch ID could be appearing in iPhones as early as next year,
according to a new report today. But while the current report suggests that
both Touch ID and Face ID fans will be catered for, that may not remain the
case for long.

The debate between the respective fans of Touch ID and Face ID began when
Apple launched the iPhone X, the first iPhone to be launched without the
fingerprint reader since it made its debut on the iPhone 5 S in 2013.

With the iPhone X launch, Apple seemed pretty clear that Face ID was the
future of iPhone authentication. It is, says Apple, faster, easier, and more
secure than Touch ID.
Face ID reinvented the way we unlock, log in, and pay. Some of our most
sophisticated technologies - the TrueDepth camera system, the Secure Enclave
and the Neural Engine - make it the most secure facial authentication ever
in a smart-phone. And even faster and easier to use.

Close family members aside, Apple says that Face ID is 20 times more secure
than Touch ID.
Every fingerprint is unique, so it's rare that even a small section of two
separate fingerprints are alike enough to register as a match for Touch ID.
The probability of this happening is 1 in 50,000 with a single, enrolled
finger.

The probability that a random person in the population could look at your
iPhone or iPad Pro and unlock it using Face ID is approximately 1 in 1
million with a single enrolled appearance.

Most owners of iPhone X/XS and latest iPad Pro devices say they would never
go back. That's certainly true for me.

But while that appears to be the consensus view, it's not a universal one.
There are owners of Face ID devices who say they find it less reliable than
Touch ID, and there are owners of Touch ID devices who claim they won't
upgrade until Touch ID is available on newer devices.

Today's report says that Apple is aiming to please all of the people all of
the time, with plans to offer both forms of biometric authentication in
future iPhones, starting in either 2020 or 2021. In-screen Touch ID would
enable Apple to bring back Touch ID without the need for a Home button.

Apple is apparently readying a new under-display integrated Touch ID
fingerprint sensor "as early as its 2020 iPhones" next fall, according to a
report today from Bloomberg. The report says it would be an addition to the
existing Face ID authentication and unlock system, allowing users to
authenticate with either fingerprint or face biometrics [.]

Offering both Touch ID and Face ID would increase overall convenience and
speed of unlocking the iPhone. A user would register their fingerprints and
facial signature, and the phone can unlock as soon as either recognition
succeeds. This means Touch ID can make up for Face ID's weaknesses, and vice
versa.

The problem may come in the future, however. Once In-screen Touch ID proves
reliable, the temptation for Apple to lose the notch by dropping Face ID may
prove irresistible.

Losing the notch, to effectively give an all-screen design, would create a
similar wow factor to that of the iPhone X when it launched. Jony Ive may
have bowed out, but his "single slab of glass" vision for the iPhone likely
lives on within the design team.
Apple already has form for prioritizing form over function in this way. The
company has long aimed to make iPhones as slim as possible, even though many
of us would prefer a slightly thicker phone with better battery life and no
camera bump.

Could Apple do both, and embed Face ID tech beneath the display too?
Long-term, anything is possible. One Android manufacturer has already
demonstrated an under-screen camera. But that's just a proof of concept at
this stage, and Apple would also need to embed the IR emitter and dot
projector too before we could have under-display Face ID. That's not
something that's going to happen anytime soon.

There is, then, a risk that Apple will at some point prioritize design over
performance by dropping Face ID in favor of the clean look of an iPhone that
offers only embedded Touch ID. That, to me, would be a huge shame.

I love Face ID. The beauty of it is that you get strong authentication that
is almost invisible. I pick up my phone, and it's unlocked. I open my
banking app, and a second or so later, I'm looking at my bank balance. They
say the best user interfaces are invisible, and that to me is very nearly
true of Face ID. Having to touch a finger to a device now feels clunky in
comparison.

If Apple supplements Face ID with embedded Touch ID, I'm all in favor. But
if it later drops Face ID to get a sleeker design - as I fear it might -
that would to me be a backward step. I hope I'm wrong.

What's your view? Would you be willing to sacrifice Face ID to

Hahaha... it works!!!

Here it is. All it takes is a single Action, to run a little Applescript.
1) In Automator, create a new "Quick Action".
2) Add a single "Run Applescript" action, like this:

Workflow receives
Input is   entire selection

Color
jos   a Output replaces selected text
in
k Run AppleScript •
on run {t1 IpuL, paran   }
set thedate to (curren   ) as
tell application "System Events"
keystroke thed
end tell
end --
3) Save it - I called it "type the date", you can call it whatever you like.
4) In System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->Services, locate the
"type the date" service, and add a shortcut. I used
"command-control-option-D", again you can use anything you like.

That's it. I switched to Mail, pressed the shortcut. The very first
time, a dialog appeared telling me that Mail wanted to control
Automator. I allowed.
It just works. Type command-control-option-D, and it types the date and
time.
You will get the same dialog when you use it with an application for the
first time only.

You also need to have any such application allowed to "control your
computer" in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Accessibility.

If not, you will get a "... is not allowed to send keystrokes" alert.

To enable this service open System Preferences. Select the keyboard option, and then
“Keyboard Shortcuts” from the tab options. Within the left hand options select “Services”.
Within the list that appears in the right hand box select “Long Date”, “Long Date &
Time”, “Short Date”, “Short Date & Time” or “Time”. You can add and remove as many as

Re: notifications on my Mac

2019-09-06 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Yes, you can do some adjusting of what shows up as a dialog versus just showing
up in Notification center. I was looking at the options for All day event
notifications in my Calendar app (preferences / alerts) and only saw options
for none, 1 day before at 9AM or two days before at 9 AM. (Well there were
other day counts but no place to adjust the time of the alert).

This is not a hardware dependent change, but a OS one. It might have come out
about the same time as the Touch Bar machines but I certainly need to use the

Re: Numpad commanderr

2019-09-06 Thread dan d.

A commander using numbers different from those on the main keyboard can be
established with those on the numpad.

For an example, a commander using an option+ 3 on the main keyboard and an
option + 3 on the numpad would do different things.

Re: New Mac User

2019-09-06 Thread 'Devin Prater' via MacVisionaries
That would be me. To do this:
• When you open the Mail app, you should be in the Messages table.
• Interact with that table. You should then be on a message in that table
• Now, interact with that message. If you aren’t on one, Voiceover + Right
arrow until you are.
• Now, you should hear “unread” or from whom the message is sent. Right arrow
until you hear the subject spoken; it is passed the time it was sent.
• Now, you can just use Down Arrow to navigate between messages, Delete to
delete them, (delete is where backspace is on other computers,) or Return to
open it.
• Note also that you can navigate by sender, or even receive time if you want.
I navigate by sender in the “Junk” folder, for example.

Hope this helps.

Actually Marie, I was referring not to the QuickStart tutorial, but to the
getting started guide. That’s a much more in-depth tutorial it’s an actual book
of chapters devoted to various functions of voiceover. It’s the bottom most
entry in the help system just below the QuickStart tutorial. It also has
appendices for various keystrokes and functions etc. Good luck.

USB Hub for iPad Pro

2019-09-06 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Lists,

Sorry but I'm cross posting this
A while back someone posted something about a USB-C hub that had been developed
for the iPad Pro and expanding it's USB etc ports
I'm just wondering if this device is yet available and if it will work on IOS
12.x for the iPad or will only work with the iPad OS when released next week

Thanks for any help anyone can flick me.

Re: Beginners question

2019-09-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Petrus,

Here’s a solution for you.
In VoiceOver Utility, go to Commanders and select Keyboard commander. This is
the one that uses the righthand Option key. Click the Add button and press a
key that is not already used by the commander.
VO-Right Arrow once to the menu button, click it and press sp for speech, then
right arrow and navigate down to decrease rate.
Press Return, then repeat the process for Increase rate.
The new commands will show up in the table.
Cheers,

Anne

 Dave,

It's all a matter of priority and preference. Yes, it worked in the past,
and yes, it still works. It just is a slightly different key combination.
Making the rotor less key strokes, from their research, probably affected
more people and would make more aspects of VO easily manipulated.
Changing the voice parameters is less often necessary, whereas, changing
the rotor is more commonly done.
