Re: Word Processors recommendation

2020-03-10 Thread Eric Caron
Thanks folks,

This has been very helpful.

My documents tend to be pretty simple, though they can get long.

Text edit seemed to handle reading and saving back as a doc file.

Also, Pages seems pretty responsive and I seem to be finding my way around
pretty well.

I was originally planning on getting the 365 to try but now I’m tempted to use
these two word processors and see how that goes.

The info has been very helpful.

Re: backblaze and voiceover

2020-03-10 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Jean,

Years ago I started using Carbon Copy Cloner. At the time it was free.
Then it moved to a payed model. I’ve been using it ever sense. It is
accessible. It makes a bootable copy on a external drive.

I have only once had to use it to completely restore my hard drive, but
it worked and was well worth having it.

It can also be used to retrieve files from past backups.

I just mention it as I’ve had good luck with it. But, I have not investigated
other options in many years.

Please keep responses on list, as that is how we all learn.

Best,

Eric Caron

backblaze and voiceover

2020-03-10 Thread jean parker
Hello All:

I am considering purchasing Backblaze and have some questions. I am a bit
hesitant because they do not publish a customer support phone number and they
don't say anything about accessibility on their web site. Thus, I would like to
hear from the group about your experiences as follows:

1. I did the preliminary backup as part of the 15 day free trial. I found the
interface to select drives tricky to use so I am not sure exactly what is
selected for backup and what is excluded.

2. Naturally, the ultimate objective of having such a service is to be able to
restore files in case of a problem. I went to the view and restore files
interface but was also not able to find things like documents, desktop,
downloads etc. How does this work and is the restore process accessible? If so,
how is it done with voiceover?

3. What is people's experience with their customer support? Are they
responsive? Do they have enough knowledge to be conversant about how to perform
functions using voiceover?

Replying off list is fine in order to reduce clutter on the list. My email is:
radioforever @gmail.com

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Word Processors recommendation

Text Edit is a nice option but it is pretty basic. I have also experienced
issues with MS Word documents loosing certain types of formatting, such as
numbering and other formatting options that are not supported by Text Edit.

Re: Word Processors recommendation

2020-03-10 Thread Bradford Snyder
Hi Eric,

Pages, Numbers and Keynote are all very nice apps and are very accessible with
VoiceOver, but the majority of the world uses MS Office, so unless you want to
constantly swim upstream, MS Office is the way to go.
I have been using Office 365 on both my Macs for 5 years and have found it to e
very accessible using VoiceOver. Granted, I mostly use MS Word and have only
used Excel infrequently.
The price for one computer is $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. I have
several computers, so I go with the option that lets me use Office on up to 5
computers for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. You also get regular updates
at no additional expense.

Like everything else, there will be lots of opinions on this, so it is up to
you to decide what is the best option for your situation.

HTH

Re: Word Processors recommendation

2020-03-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Pages, Keynote and Numbers are all totally accessible. If you plan on sharing
a document created in Pages with someone who is a Microsoft Office user, then
you'll still need to export it to a Word document (.DOCX). Pages is an Apple
product, not a Microsoft product and thus I doubt that this will ever change.
Office 365 is quite accessible on the Mac. Others may be able to give you more
specifics, but it is totally usable now from a VO prospective. Pages is free,
so deciding whether you wish to purchase a subscription to Office 365 vs using
Apple's suite is your call.

So I’m considering Microsoft 365.

What is the word processor of choice these days?

Anyway, I’m wondering if Pages has improved over the years so. That I don’t
need Microsoft work for Mac or Microsoft 365.

What is the current state of Accessability for Microsoft and Pages?

My concern is was of use and ability to share documents as a doc or similar
file.
It was frustrating to have to export in Pages every time I wanted to share a
file with someone.

Still my day to day work is almost all Mac now.

Before purchasing Microsoft 365 I thought I’d check in.
Thoughts and tips appreciated!

Re: After upgrading to Catalina there's no sound when pasting an attachment into body of email

2020-03-10 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
In Sierra, there’s a sound when I paste an attachment into the body of an email
message and Voiceover indeed announces the name of the attachment. In Catalina
neither occurs.
