Re: archive utility on a Mac

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’m pretty sure that I’ve done this before with the stock Archive Utility. It
won’t hurt anything to try. Select two zip files, then just press cmd-o to
open them. It should just do it. The process may take a while depending on
the size of the zip files, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Re: Facetime on a mac

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

On your iPhone, go into Settings, Phone, and double-tap on item that reads
“Calls on other devices, When Nearby”. A new screen should open and list the
devices that you can enable/disable. Make sure that the Mac is enabled. It
will read something like, “Marie’s Mac, On”.

is it possible or advisable to select multiple files and then have the archive
utility unzip them all at once or is it best to do them individually? would
another app be better at that such as unzip unarchiver?

thanks.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Phil Halton
OK, now how about iOS? I’ve been hearing Remi’s name read out in English and
Arabic for a month and I must say it is bothering me. I’ve tried going it to
VoiceOver settings and turning off automatic language detection and it did no
good. How can this be done on iOS? That’s all I use I never use OS X anymore.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi Ramy,
Cool, thanks for that. I know what the Arabic characters are saying now, at
least on my iPhone. My Mac ignores them all together, I wouldn’t have known
that you wrote your name in two alphabets if my iPhone hadn’t have read it. So
I must have my Mac set to ignore other languages as the voice didn’t change
with Tims French either.
The one thing about this list that might potentially embarrass me is the fact
that it is a multi national list with many different countries and sometimes I
don’t know if I’m replying to a male or female, so I avoid making any gender
references.
I’ve had a few people in New Zealand that think I’m female even though Petrus
is a male name. Although I don’t see any reason why there can’t be female Rocks
as well.
Oh, and no smart comments on my gender by Simon if he’s reading this.

Automatic Language Detection, Was Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
I’m modifying the subject here. This thread has really taken off and I feel a
little sheepish for Ramy seeing his name all the time right was. Anyhow, I’m
still running Mojave, and for me the automatic language detection does not
appear to be working at all. I tried reading Tim’s French words, and VO did not
change its voice at all. Is there perhaps something in systemwide preferences
relating to language that we’re maybe overlooking? I have Victoria as my
default voice.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You shouldn’t really notice any change unless you land on text that is in a
different language. If VO figures out the that it is French, or Spanish etc,
it should change accordingly for pronouncing that, or those, words. It will
remain speaking Alex the rest of the time.

I’ll throw a French word or two in the sentence below to see if it works at all.

Bonjour, je m’appelle Tim. Comment ça va?

A bientot.

I read Tim’s instructions but it’s not made any difference. I land on that

Hi,

If enabled, it should remain using the Alex voice, or whatever voice you were
originally using but add the voice change when it comes upon a different
language.

Hi,

To enable, press VO-cmd-shift-left or right until you hear “Voice”, keep those
keys pressed, then use the up or down arrow until you hear “Automatically
Select”, then release. To disable, do the same to get to the Voice option then
choose your preferred voice.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
If you perform the below instructions, using the down-arrow instead of up will
take you past the automatic language suggestion and land on other voices like
Alex or Victoria or Samantha or whoever you want. At least, that’s what
happened to me. Also, it may take a couple of seconds for VO to load the next
voice you come upon when you do this.

Re: Controlling Audio Output

2020-05-05 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yeah, I came across Audio Hijack, but it's for recording to file.
Useful, but a different use case.

Once upon a time there was a port of the Linux jack application, but it
seems it's unmaintained. Even it's old web page,
http://www.jackosx.com/, has expired and no longer resolves to anything.

Jack does serve this function on Linux. You can make the output of one
application go to whatever device or other application you want to
specify. Basically, it's a software patch bay.

Best,

Janina

Re: Controlling Audio Output

2020-05-05 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Seems I was just dreaming!

Yes, I see where all audio can be directed to a different device, and I
even see how these devices may be aggregated.

However, it's also theoretically possible to direct audio output from
one application to one device, while directing output from a second
application to a different device. This doesn't seem to be supported by
the Apple OS, only by individual applications that care to define that
functionality.

Oh well, a girl can dream!

Best,

Janina

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Ramy and all,

Ramy, now that I understand, it’s really not disturbing to me, especially after
what others have suggested I can do about reading them. For all, several of you
have suggested an automatically select language rotor option somewhere in VO
settings, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere, so I’m stumped!

Thanks for any help,
Pete

Re: Syncronmizing passwords

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

This sounds like a combination of a Jamf Policy and user integration. When
logging into your Mac, do you log in with your AD user and password, or do you
use a local user, then connect to the server with your AD credentials? If the
latter, then it is logical that they do not match, as the AD configuration is
not specifically related to the local user. If the former, then you could try
to use the tool in Self Service to change your AD password again and this may
change the FV local password as part of the policy. If it errors out, then it
may be necessary to change the password back to your previous one using the
non-Self Service method, then use the Self Service tool to do the change again.
If none of that works, you’ll likely need to speak with your IT folks who
manage the Jam instance to see how their Jamf policy is implemented. There’s a
number of factors that might be affecting this including a bug in this version
of Jamf.

Re: 2 things concerning apps on IOS

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Everything you want is in Settings, iTunes & App Store. If you don’t want apps
purchased on the iPhone 8 to show up on the iPhone 6, then do the following on
the iPhone 6. Under the Automatic Downloads section, make sure that Apps is
not checked. For the second question, if you wish this to be the case on both
iPones, then go into Settings, Your Name, iTunes & App Store and down near the
bottom, uncheck the item for optimizing apps on the device.

Syncronmizing passwords

2020-05-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
On my work computer, I recently changed my AD Password which then caused JAMF
to change my login and keychain passwords. But for some reason, the password
associated with File Vault at boot did not change. In the past, I had changed
the password using the JAMF Self Service app in the Menu Etras, but I was lazy
this time. How can I get FV password to be synced again with my Mac password.
Thanks!

I figured it out.

I didn’t even think to check the menu bar which is where there is a drop down
for audio. There you can set the audio device to headphones or speakers. Worked
like a charm.

Re: Controlling Audio Output

2020-05-05 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
There’s audio settings in the system prefs.
But this controls audio for the hole system.
Can the aplication set its own audio output?

Re: Silencing VoiceOver with the control key

2020-05-05 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I have that problem with the Siri Voices.
But not with the acapela ones.
Very odd.

It would be helpful if it worked. It would be a quick way to stop speech
in all kinds of situations. Mostly when my wife wants to tell me
something and the computer is talking so I can’t hear. But also when on a
phone call, or when I want to silence a long unneeded computer ramble.

I have learned to restart voice over or turn the volume down but the
control key is faster and easier. And it has the advantage that a second
press starts speech where it left off.

I notice just now that if I close my lid and then reopen the control key
feature no longer works. I have to restart Voice over.

Unfortunately due to an active cat it is best if I shut my lid often.

I’ll pay attention to see what else triggers the failure.
