On Re-Installing MacOS

2023-08-04 Thread Bill Gallik
I recently needed to have my Mac mini hard-drive replaced. I’m now having a
problem with some of the basic VoiceOver features; for instance, + does
not bring up the VoiceOver configuration screen. Also, QuickNav is not working
in web sites.

I called Apple support and was advised to re-install MacOS; I was instructed to
press + during reboot to initiate the re-installation process.

This did not work for me. Can anybody offer any helpful suggestions?

TIA

Re: Editing PDF's with Voiceover

2023-08-04 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, so would the same apply to a privacy policy which is supposed to state the
following “to fight the funding of terrorists” but the word “fight” looks like
“y(umlaut symbol)ght? I can’t figure out how to type the umlaut symbol
correctly, so that’s why it’s spelled out, but it wasn’t in a privacy policy I
was sent to audit, and I was like “what?"

This probably isn’t a spelling error in the PDF file at all. The most likely
cause is that the “fi” ligature is being used in the typeset text, and the PDF
isn’t properly accessible, so your screen reader isn’t
Receiving the correct characters, even though both “f” and “I” are present in
the text as shown on screen or printed.
You could convert the PDF file to text and then edit, I suppose. Editing the
original PDF wouldn’t help, as it’s most likely correct as is.

Re: Saving Audio

2023-08-04 Thread Brad Snyder
Alternatively, you can use Piezo, an audio recorder from Rogue Ameba, the
makers of Audio Hijack and Loopback.
Piezo will let you record audio output from any application on your Mac without
the need for additional software such as Audio Hijack or Loopback.
Using Piezo is very straight forward, and pretty simple for a new user.

RE: Just Appreciating the Accessibility of Apple Home Kit

2023-08-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Donna,

Okay, I am posting the info to the model I purchased, below. This model was
suggested by V iPhone list member, James. It was the best purchase I've made
in years.

Mark

Original Post:
I’ve had a Sensi model st55 for 2 years now.Be sure you get this cheaper
$80.00, model available from Amazon. It has buttons that control selecting
heat or air conditioning and changing the temperature and more. It also works
with Alexa and there is an app for I Phone and I think, Android.
Note, the more expensive model is flat screen only. No buttons. The buttons
are important for a blind person to use the thermostat in case your internet
goes down.

The $80.00, thermostat with buttons is model ST55. Here is an Amazon link.

Just curious, which thermostat did you choose? We’ve got the Ecobee, but I’m
considering replacing it.

Re: Saving Audio

2023-08-04 Thread Michael Babcock
Hi,

It wasn't clear as to where they posted the audio, if they posted it to
YouTube, use a tool to download the video, such as Downie - The Fastest Video
Converter

https://www.hitpaw.net/sem/video-converter-youtube-b.html
Alternatively, what I would do is simply use Audio Hijack and capture the audio
from the tool that actually playing it if it wasn't available on YouTube or
couldn't be downloaded with the aforementioned tool.

Hope that helps a little..

Mark,

Just curious, which thermostat did you choose? We’ve got the Ecobee, but I’m
considering replacing it.

Re: Can I connect my HomePod to my mobile hot spot

2023-08-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
But if you’re accepting the hotel’s conditions, you’re doing so while connected
to their network. So wouldn’t that mean that the signal that would be repeated
would be that of the hotel? In that case, you would still have to reset the
HomePod mini, because it wouldn’t be connecting to your home network.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Editing PDF's with Voiceover

2023-08-04 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, all I’m really wanting to do at this point, is correct the spelling errors
I’m constantly finding in these PDF’s I’m sent, a perfect example I’m always
finding is the I is always left out of the word “financial,” so Voiceover will
always pronounce it “financal”.
What means would you think would be easiest for me to do this?

Re: Editing PDF's with Voiceover

2023-08-04 Thread Jonathan Cohn
The process of turning an inaccessible PDF document into a document that can be
reviewed by a screen reader is called tagging.
With tagging you can also indicate if an item is a heading or list item or a
paragraph.
Depending on how well the OCR does, tagging to that level might be difficult
for a blind person.
Certainly Adobe Acrobat (which I believe can be obtained for about $5/month)
can do tagging, but there are also non Adobe product that can do this.
Obviously the best solution is to start with a word or in-design document and
then convert it to a PDF. When one does things this way, most of the editors
styles will get directly converted into the appropriate tag in the PDF
Also, I believe that Pnema solutions has a cloud based service that uses AI to
better convert scanned text into a usable pdf using AI for spelling corrections
and detecting font changes that might indicate headers.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

You would set it up with that information before leaving. Then when you get to
the hotel you have this device talk to the hotel network and all of your
devices talk to this one. The difficulty comes when you have one of those
hotels that brings up a web page asking you to follow their conditions. My
understanding is that you initially accept that with your computer and then
make this router look like your computer to the hotel network.
Of course the other question is how accessible is their control interface.
I’ll be buying one of these for my next trip, but I don’t have any plans until
possibly the end of the year.
