Video encoder needed anyone know a good one?
Hey all, I am looking for a way to compress videos down in size hopefully to h.264, - have looked in the app store but the one I think I need is £35 and I dont even know if it is accessible. I am trying to compress an MOV file to an mp4 for iPhone but I dont think handbraek will do this. Maybe someone could put me right if it does, that would be fantastic. alternatively a free or low ish cost application would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Had to re-install iTunes, find and replace the iPhone updater file, restore about 300 times or it felt that way and kept getting error 3014 which looks like they think I tried to JB however I haven't ever even been tempted. Re: Mike H: Question regarding blue tooth non in ear head set's that are studio sounding for the mac.
Hi, firstly I wouldn't be looking for a studio quality headset that connects via bluetooth, The bluetooth standard just doesn't support a high enough bit rate to be considered high quality from a technical point of view. Having said that, I would look at the nokia BH905 bluetooth headset, it is about as good as bluetooth headsets get while the nitrates remain low. Low nitrate however is a very subjective thing and I consider myself to have a good ear and they are certainly verygood quality, so much so infect that you really can't tell they are blueooth. If you aren't so attached to the bluetooth idea and you want real quality. I can't say enough good things about the Beyer Dynamic MMX 300 I think they are called. They are incredible. and come with a USB DAC so you don't have to use the bad quality DACs apple use in their computers. These headsets are neither cheep nor small and compact though so if that is what you want, these are not for you. With headphones you really have to make a compromise though and if you want bluetooth I haven't found a better compromise than the Nokia BH905. Take Care. Re: Mike H: Question regarding blue tooth non in ear head set's that are studio sounding for the mac.
Again don't get cought up on studio quality. it doesn't actually exist as a standard, I'm guessing all you want is a good quality headset that connects via bluetooth and the best in my opinion is the Nokia. Its very well made as well. If you want something a studio editor would use, you can't have bluetooth however studio quality isn't a qualification or standard. Its just a word that gets banded around to denote high quality. The Nokias are comfy too. they have pads which sit on top of your ear and are noise cancellinging They have 10 microphones, 2 for picking up your voice on a phone call and the other 8 are for active noise reduction. High quality drivers too and they have media controls on one side. They also work with VO very well. Lastly I said in my last post, nitrate, the iphone was auto correcting bit rate. Cheers. Re: Nokia Expands Patent Claims Against Apple With New European Lawsuits
Hey everyone, I don't have time to read the article right now but I will later, I have a few thoughts about this situation though, Nokia have been developing mobile equipment for the last 16 or so years, apple have been in the business for 3. it seems to me that if Apple are such newcomers they would be hard pressed to make a platform without building on existing technologies already pioneered by apple. Let us not forget that Nokia have dominated innovation on mobile technologies for their entire existence. Everything you see in the iPhone came first to Nokia other than a few interaction methods and the app store. The difference is that Apple make things nice to use and nokia make it feel like a weekend project. Obviously apple have voiceover too which is enormous for us however purely from a technological point of view I struggle to understand how apple can make a phone which clearly uses existing technologies and therefore patents without paying royalties. I agree that it is wrong to sue people over money etc but maybe nokia and others have ligitimate complaints. The only thing that is certain though is the lawyers get richer than anyone else out of this. I'm just saying if apple have had to borrow on progress made by Nokia, samsung, Sony/ericson etc. maybe they should pay for what they have benefitted from. Re: blue tooth on iPad
Hi, Yeh the iPad and iPhone 4 use a micro SIM, everything else in the world uses mini SIM. They are exactly the same internal configuration but the micro loses the plastic surround making it considerably smaller. If you are daring enough you can cut any mini SIM down to micro SIM size. Anyway to answer the question about bluetooth, I use a Nokia BH905. Its a headset style over the head arrangement and supports A2DP and AVRC as well as standard headset protocols. Its a really nice headset with noise cancelling, a beautiful design and feels very solid. Unfortunately the iPhone and iPad don't support AVRC for remote control of play/pause/forward/backward. which is a pain but the biggest issue on the iPhone iPad and iPod is the resolution of the bluetooth protocol. It hasn't been complained about very much so I asume that most people don't notice. I don't have any measurements but i'd guess A2DP on the i devices is limitted to only 12KHz, maybe 16 but certainly not 22 or 44. Music through all bluetooth headphones that I've heard is tinny and limited in trebble. It isn't a limitation of the bluetooth protocol as if I pair them with my Nokia N86 or N95 they sound spectacular. I was really hoping Apple would address this issue in IOS 4 but I guess they haven't had enough complaints about it yet. Its very annoying though as I have a beautiful sounding headset crippled by apples drivers. In summary though the BH905 will do exactly what you want, they are solid and sound wonderful as long as you don't mind losing a little trebble. Simon Fogarty wrote: Hi Mac people, I've just splashed out and got the iPad, great toy after shaving a sim card down to fit the micro slot, and being able to get internet access outside of my work and home. Is this normal, I would have thought the blue ant devices were pretty common devices. If this one wont work, is there anything that is recommended for the Bluetooth connectivity on the iPad? Re: Safari 5 / 10.64 do I install?
I definitely would not install Safari 5 or 10.6.4. I have installed both and am very disappointed and really quite miffed that they clearly didn't do compliance testing including voiceover especially on Safari. It stopped me ordering a iphone 4 yesterday as safari wouldn't work with the apple site properly. There is not a single advantage that I have found yet with either update. Also they still haven't fixed the bug where invert black and white colours stops working after a few hours and requires you to reset defaults in keyboard settings to make it work again. Re: Apple Releases iTunes V9.2
Hi there Olivia, No I agree, I haven't completely lost my faith in Apple but I am disappointed. What this shows is that they didn't test Safari with voiceover, if they had, they would have found the issues. I tried to get the app from the app store to order the iphone 4 but it isn't available in the UK. or at least it wasn't when I searched for it. I wouldn't have had any problem what so ever however they still haven't helped out after an hour on the phone tonight as my local store ran out of pre order iphones while I was struggling with Safari. If they had said oh sorry about the issues with safari we will pop you on the pre order list as we can see you were making an effort to order for 2 hours, that would have been very different. Instead of being on this forum feeling let down by Apple I would be here saying Wow guys guess what Apple did today. They screwed up but they went a long way and made a huge effort to help out with the shortcomings of the untested software. Do you think i'm being harsh on them??? I'm not saying i'm not. I'm asking you. All I know is I can't access a few websites I use a lot, I haven't got an iphone 4 pre ordered and Apple didn't do anything to try to make things right for me. I have spent almost £6000 with them in a year and I just worry that if they didn't test safari before pushing it out this may be a sign of things to come. Probably not the case, it is just not what I hoped for from them. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Apple Releases iTunes V9.2
You are quite right Ricardo, Thank you for calming me down a little. I still feel let down that they wouldn't help when I tried to contact them on 4 seperate occasions and didn't acknowledge it was their software causing the issue. They were sorry but couldn't do anything at all about it. The prospective you gave me though is that they probably do lose money on voiceover at the moment, at least until more people switch over and I guess we are kind of early adopters. A little compliance testing wouldn't have hurt though with maybe a flag saying if you use voiceover, wait for the next version. Chat on the Mac
Hi everyone, I am relatively new to Mac and occasionally I just can't find a way of doing things that is as good as the way I did it on Windows. Chat is the main issue at the moment. If I want to use Skype chat for example the way I do it is to start the chat window then move the mouse pointer up a little to read the message that has just dropped in then down a little again to go back to the edit box. This is hardly ideal. I thought hotspots and watch hotspots would help but unfortunately they don't work as I imagined. I thought i'd just mark a hotspot then tell voiceover to watch it then if the text on that line changed it would announce it. No such luck. Am I doing it wrong??? or is that not what it is intended for? If not how do you all use chat? Skype Facebook and MSN are what i'd like to use. I can't imagine the way i'm doing it at present is the best way. Another thing i'd really like help with is IRC chat. I am using the exact same method to read chat frames. Nudge the pointer up into the window to read the posts then back down to type my own message. Re: Chat on the Mac
I should really have said, the way I did it on Windows was to use a small application called Smart Butler. It cost $15 or so and it monitored all instances of chat in Skype, MSN, IRC and Yahoo. If a new message dropped in to either it would read it out loud with whichever TTS engine you specified. I would love a version of this for mac but haven't managed to find one. Also I guess it may have sounded like I was saying I liked windows more but that is not the case at all. I love the Mac and voiceover is superior in almost every way to Zoomtext which I was using on Windows. There are just things I haven't worked out yet. Re: USB Headsets
Hi, I have done quite a bit of research on this as I too use a stereo headset/mic in an office. I was specifically trying to cut the noise out though. The office is like working in a noisy bar and hearing customers on the phone and my screen reader is incredibly difficult. If you buy a USB DAC with headphones and mic connections you will be able to use any headset you choose, I had the Beydynamic MX300 which actually come supplied with a USB DAC and don't cut out too much of the background noise, they are also incredibly comfy, very well made and for music listening are simply wonderful, there is no other word to describe them. The microphone is also incredibly high quality, it is pretty directional too so it cuts out almost all of the background noise which would be fantastic if you work in a noisy environment. I literally cannot recommend this headset highly enough. They are supplied with soft felt like ear cups which you can replace with fake leather ones if you choose but they are nowhere near as nice. I would also recommend you stay well away from in ear headphones if you are going to be wearing them for hours on end and also probably putting them in and yanking them out often. This will harm your ears over time. The only downside to the Berdynamics is the price. In the UK they cost £400 but I found them for £320. I think that is around $450 or so. I now use an aviation headset, the Bose Aviation X which is an active noise cancelling headset and blocks out an incredible amount of background noise. It uses very strange connections though as it is intended for aviation instrument panels which have their own connection types. This can be overcome with an adaptor box but I guess this isn't what you need as it is designed to cut out background noise which is not what you are trying to do. Also it costs around £900. Another option you could look at which is very inexpensive and also comfortable is a simple pair of Plantronics on ear headset with a USB DAC. You know the kind of thing just very cheap headphones with a boom mic. Personally as you have probably gathered I really really rate the Beyerdynamics especially as I now use them at home for music listening and skype on my macbook pro. If I can help any further just send me an e-mail. I'd be happy to help. Scott Howell wrote: All, I am looking for an USB headset/mic combo. These can fit over, on, or in the ear, but I do not want them to completely block all sound because I would be wearing these in an office environment. At home I have a Bose headset and separate mic, but this setup wouldn't work as well in the office. So, any thoughts would be appreciated. Re: USB Headsets
Sorry to ramble on but I have also tried the Senheizer PC350 headset, its not bad either. I wouldn't shout from the rooftops about it though. The Mic is high quality and the headphones are not too bad, not great but not awful. They are quite a lot less expensive though at around £170 although i'm sure you could get them for less. They are a large cup design and very very comfy. What made me think of them for you though is that they let almost all the ambient noise in as the seals around them are quite hard foam which is comfortable but doesn't make a good seal around your ear so lets background noise in. They don't have a USB DAC included though so you'd have to buy one. Haha just thought of another you could consider. If you have bluetooth on your office computer you should consider the Nokia BH905 It is a high quality on ear headset with mic but the mic is not on a boom which may be convenient for you. Still picks up sound pretty well. Also they are active noise cancelling so if it does get noisy you can always switch them on and be in your own little world. They can be plugged in by 3.5mm jack although this wouldn't be suitable for you as it is a single cable instead of the usual 2 x 3.5mm jacks. this would make it difficult to connect to your computer. Anyway, sorry to ramble, I just thought i'd let you know of 2 other options. If you decided on the PC350's I have a set I don't use which I'm sure I could send you for a reasonable price. I'm not sure they are exactly what you want but if you look at them and decide you like them. I have a set. Scott Howell wrote: All, I am looking for an USB headset/mic combo. What I am specifically looking for is a headset that can be warn for long periods of time and I mean for 5 to 6 hours a day. These can fit over, on, or in the ear, but I do not want them to completely block all sound because I would be wearing these in an office environment. At home I have a Bose headset and separate mic, but this setup wouldn't work as well in the office. So, any thoughts would be appreciated. Since my employer is purchasing these, I'm not as concerned about expense. :) Well I guess under a million should work. :) Thanks, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: USB Headsets
http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/beyerdynamic-mmx300-gaming-headphones-mmx-300-prodid-1943.html This is a link to the headphones and its not MX 300 its Beyerdynamic MMX 300. It says they cut out loads of ambient noise but they really don't. Every other point in the description is accurate. Scott Howell wrote: All, I am looking for an USB headset/mic combo. Re: OCR on new iPhone could change our lives forever.
I've been thinking more about this, what about a CCTV app for the new iPhone, This could obviously be easily updated to run on the i Pad version 2 or 3 which will probably have a camera. What about the future when processors have got faster and an app could be written to guide someone through a crowd or to a local shop a mixture of GPS and a high resolution camera could easily do that with a powerful enough processor. Maybe an app to assist someone crossing a road. Maybe this could even be done now, estimating speed of approaching vehicles would not be difficult its what computers do best crunch numbers. Well maybe not just yet but in the near future. Just let your imagination go crazy. All we need is a developer who wants to specialise and they will be in the money. :) On May 20, 9:54 pm, Andy Lane andylanesem...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I would imagine most people on this group come from a Nokia background as until recently that was pretty much the only option for accessible mobile technologies. I have always wanted to buy one of these applications as I am obviously unable to read my own mail. it would also be useful for menus and cooking instructions. anything really where reading text on a physical format is required. I didn't buy either of the applications on 2 grounds, firstly on principle. I refuse to be ripped off at the incredible prices these developers were attempting to extort from me. one of the apps was £800 and the other was £900 this was made even worse when I saw one of the applications advertised in a very slightly modified format so as to make it none accessible by Talks. The price they were advertising the app for was £4. I immediately called the UK vendor for the app and complained and they had no excuse for this price difference after we discussed the accessible portion of the software being actively removed rather than a new app being developed for mainstream sale. The app was advertised on OVI store as KNFB archiver if my memory serves correctly. basically a sighted user could photograph there mail and keep it digitally rather than filing it away. It was the exact same software but with artificial blocks introduced to make Talks unable to read it. I was, as you can imagine very annoyed. Anyway. My reason for writing this post is to ask if anyone knows an iPhone developer who could write an application similar to the ones available on Nokia. This has not been a realistic proposition on the 3gS as the camera resolution is far too low. Well not anymore. The rumours circulating about the new iphone is that it will have a 5mp camera with an LED flash. This will at last be capable of capturing an A4 sheet of paper with sufficient clarity to run an OCR over the image and get good results. If anyone could write this app I'm certain they will make a huge amount of money if they charge a reasonable amount for the app. Just imagine having an app which can read all your mail. I'd buy that in a heartbeat if it cost anything under £100. If it was priced around £20 or £30 I'm sure it would sell to every single blind / V.I. iphone user instantly and as the news spreads about how good the iPhone is for accessibility and new users move over from Nokia just think how many copies of this app could be sold at a reasonable price. What does everyone think? Does anyone know someone capable of writing this app??? Obviously OCR Tool is available now but it isn't perfect. Its almost there but not quite. for example it doesn't give assistance lining the camera up and it won't flip the image if it detects it is upside down. Maybe the OCR team could adapt the software and charge £9.99 instead of £2.99. I would personally pay more than that but I'm sure the lower they make the cost the more people will buy it. Isn't the Iphone/iPad/MBP changing everything for us. Its so exciting. Apple are not ripping us off and charging many many times more than they should, just because we need to buy something accessible. Its a wonderful time. Next week I am taking an hour off work to queue and buy the iPad and if I choose I can take my MBP with me, plug it in, in the store and have voiceover working before I leave. just imagine if half the large companies/manufacturers put this investment into accessibility. What is more is that I can walk outside and buy the latest best selling book for the same price as everyone else. on the same day and in the same format. I think an app that can read text from a sheet of paper would be THE killer app and its so easily implemented. Whichever developer jumps on this first is bound to make some serious money. Lets get someone interested. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups
Re: OCR on new iPhone could change our lives forever.
Hi there, You don't need xenon flash at all, I had a Nokia N95 and a Nokia N86. the N95 had a 5mp camera with single LED flash and the N86 had an 8mp camera with dual LED. They both work perfectly with the trial of Text Scout which is an app available for symbian. it unfortunately costs £900 though. The point is that this can be done on the next version of iphone. Xenon would certainly help but its not a requirement.
