Subject: A New List Moderator Who Is Making A Joyful Noise

Hello Everyone,

My name is Mark Taylor. Some of you may know me from my work on the Candle
Shore BLOG.

I am delighted to inform you that Cara, the proverbial matriarch of this
list community has made me a list moderator.

Cara and I have worked together on many projects during the past 5 years or
so and we share the same vision for the environments in which we
participate; said vision based on the premise that all questions are
welcome.

Support communities such as this one are crucial to the continued enrichment
of our lives as we embrace some of the world's most amazing technologies
that serve to level the proverbial playing field between us and our sighted
counterparts and I, for one, want this playing field to remain a joyful
place; not one in which we, as list members, take timid steps but, rather,
one in which we make bold strides.

Generally speaking, I operate from a position of yes and yes we can so
if there is a way I can make your experience in this community more
pleasant, please do not hesitate to let me know.

As this is a high traffic list, it is easy to become overwhelmed. However,
there are ways to reduce the amount of Inbox Fatigue such as switching your
list membership to Digest mode or exploring new ways to skim through your
Inbox.

In episode 59 of the Candle Shore Podcast (18 minutes) I demonstrate how I
use the Apple Mail client on my MacBook (with Snow Leopard) to quickly skim
through hundreds and hundreds of messages in a matter of minutes. For your
convenience, you may

cannot use the above hyperlink, the following is the direct URL which you
may paste into your web browser, remember, if the URL covers two or more
lines, you will have to reassemble it (remove any spaces or line breaks)
before attempting to use it in your browser:

As for my beloved Windows users, while I have not produced any podcasts on
MS Outlook or Windows Mail, I am sure there are many who have, from which I
am sure you can learn some helpful tips tricks.

Until further notice, effectively, Cara and I are the only two who will be
moderating and approving new members so please be patient in this regard.

When replying to others, please do your best to phrase the answer in such a
way that others may more easily fathom the question; after all, we don't
want to turn this into a Jeopardy game show, right? (Smile)

Thank you all for taking the time to read this.

It's going to be a wonderful summer so let's greet it with a joyful noise.

Most Sincerely,

Mark

PS

Just so you don't think you have either double-vision or, as the case may
be, double-hearing, I am posting this to both the iPhone list and the Mac
Visionaries list.

RE: Newby question

Select the application you want to put on the doc and hit vo shift m for the
context menu.
There you should find the option to keep it in the doc.

Hi list:

Pardon the newby question.

I'm having all kinds of fun with my Mac Mini.

One thing I'm wondering about is, how do you get an application to appear on
the dock?

I must be missing something, but, I cannot seem to figure out how to do
this.

Thanks!

I just purchased a new Apple keyboard today and like it very much.
However, I have one question; there are four buttons that are
elongated; two are the up/down volume buttons; one is to stop the
audio stream from playing; press again, and it will resume playing.
the other button does nothing when in Keyboard Practice. What is the
top right hand button? It does nothing or is not explained by
VoiceOver when in Keyboard practice. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage,

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering what your recommendation would be for the best Twitter
client both on the Mac, and on the iPhone? I've been looking for something
better than just going to twitter.com. There was really nothing good for
Windows that would work with JAWS, but Im hoping to have some more luck on
the Mac.

Hello mac users.
The mac os 10.6.6 update is released along with the mac app store.
I've had a few minutes to play with the app store and it looks to be 100%
accessible [as if there was any doubt].
Go get it via software update if you haven't al ready.

 1. When I open mail, it tells me 1 row added or 5 rows added over and
over until all my mail is downloaded. Please tell me I can turn that off!

 2. Is there a key sequence I can use to add let's say one address from an
email to my addressbook? For example, if I want to add macvisionaries,
but not the sender from whom the message appears, how do I do that? My
husband took the mouse and put it on the to field, which was
macvisionar...@gmail.com and then he clicked the triangle to the right

addressbook. How do I do that using vo?

 3. I'm reading a message and decide to keep it, but I don't want to move
it; I want to leave it in my inbox for now. How do I close it and be
returned to my inbox list of messages? Right now I do cmd-w then cmd-1 to
reopen the inbox; I have to believe there is a better way!

 4. I've read the message and from within it, I press backspace to delete
it. This takes me back to my list of messages in the inbox, but I hear
all this verbiage about inbox table one row selected before I hear from
whom the next message was sent or its subject. Can I make that stop?

 5. I am desperate for help in fining attachments; vo tells me there is
one, but I can't seem to find it. I've done all sorts of itterations of
turning long headers on, interacting with toolbar, interacting with
message text, and the list goes on! It just escapes me!

 6. I know what the attachment is and decide to save it. I go to file and
save attachment and when the filename dialogue box comes up, it doesn't
read the name of the file. Is there a way to hear that?

Ok, those are my questions and I know they are many and basic. However, I
would be so grateful for any insight people can give me.

Windows disk, it does, but stays on a blank screen with a flashing cursor and
no error no matter how long you wait, with two different XP disks, C on
startup, or any other way of telling it to boot from CD I know of. I called
Apple about this awhile ago, but they won't help me because the warranty I
had (all 6 months of it) when I got the thing used on Ebay was done for
anyways. There's no Apple store in my area. Is there any other way to force
windows xp down this thing since it's the laptop I have and the need is still
around for software that is Win only? I know it's definitely Intel, or it
says it is, never know with stuff you buy used, but it should be. Will I get
the multiple streams or whatever they call that where Jaws can mix with
whatever else I'm doing, running Parallels if I went that way? My dad
suggested that as he knew a guy for this company whose been using that for
awhile now. I don't know that they do much audio from the Windows side, but I
don't know how to take the HD out, stick it in a PC, and install Win XP on
the second partition that way to force it to do what Apple says is supported.

 Thanks.

Subject: Re: general Mac questions / Captchas

I don't have an answer for this, but I wonder... VO-Shift-M on a
picture will bring up a contextual menu. Could one put a send image
to Abby Reader as an acttion in there?
 That would solve this problem.
 Jon

My next question is regarding using the Web. Captchas-need I say more? On
the Windows side, one would remedy this problem by downloading and using
Firefox with the Web Visum plug-in, which performed OCR on the captcha
 image
and placed it on the clipboard for convenient pasting into the
 appropriate
edit box. Also, if you didn't wish to use Firefox, there was usually an
audio alternative. I am trying to create an iChat account on the Mac.
Naturally, this requires the use of the AOL web site. Before I can
 proceed
to create my account, the web site requires that a captcha be entered.
Although they provide an audio alternative, Safari is completely unable
 to
use it and the link (upon checking) is java scripted. I know that Firefox
 is
not at all accessible on the Mac side (at least from the information I
received on this list), so are there any alternatives for captchas? Also
web-related, how do I go about obtaining Webkit-as some seem to think this
 a
better web browsing solution in general? Your contributions, time, and
 patience are appreciated.
 Thanks:)

Re: extrackting a file.

2010-09-07 Thread Chantel Cuddemi
Ian,
To extract the zip, depending on if it unzips automatically or not, you can
open the file in your downloads folder by navigating to the file in your
downloads folder and press command o or vo space to open it.
Some files, however, require a utility that unzips files. Something like stuff
it expander would work. Also, the unarchiver would work as well.
If files have the .rar extension, stuff it would work.

So, if you know a few VO key shortcuts, messenger is just as good on

Like you I would prefer a better way of using IM, it is a bit clumsy on the

to automatically speak out a message as it arrives in the active window so
I can easily quickly type a response. Currently I have to move to the edit
box and type my message and then navigate to the HTML window to read my
replies in a conversation and a lot of the time (Adium) I have to keep
scrolling down the entire history to read my last message received. Not

 2. In Skype, I can get to my contacts or conversations list with single
keystrokes using ctrl 1 and ctrl 2, and focus most other areas with similar
keystrokes. In addition to the feature I just asked for in messenger, how
 easy is this in Mac?

 3. This one is not a Mac problem, but is really important to me. I use
several programs that make tasks so easy in Windows that don't work on the
Mac. How much does it cost to buy Windows stand alone these days to run
those on a Mac? I'm thinking of SpeakOn which makes internet radio,
 podcasts
and all sorts of other audio things much easier and gives you fantastic
control over speed etc, Kurzweil 1000 which though expensive automates so
much of my mail reading by simply scanning and automatically reading things
while I'm doing things, and programs that don't even exist for Mac like the
VIP communicator for the Accessible Friends Network and VIP Conduit.

It is also possible with Jaws for people to write scripts to do things and
share them. Is this possible for VO?
