Utorrent and Yahoo Toolbar With the Latest Update?
Hi, guys, I have not had a computer for a few weeks now, but my husband has a Windows laptop. He found Yahoo Toolbar malware, which seems to have installed with the latest update of UTorrent. I have no idea if the installer had an option to skip this software. I just thought I'd let everyone know, in case you're using a virtual machine or Bootcamp.. I'm also ot sure if this applies to OS X. The toolbar gets installed on any browser you have automatically, and the only way to get rid of it in Windows is to use a malware removal tool and/or reset your cache. I remember being able to work with WIFI networks from recovery mode. Now I'm just trying to remember how I did it. Re: more questions about braille displays
I much prefer Braille for reading over audio. And now, hearing loss has made Braille even more important for me. I wish displays didn't have so many moving parts, but since they do, and Braille is very important to me, the hassle is worth it. Using Braille with OS X and iOS is different from Windows, naturally. I guess it's simply a matter of personal preference. If you rely heavily on Braille, then the current technology is useable, if not ideal. You might find out from dealers and manufacturers what their repair and maintenance policies are. Freedom Scientific has a flat repair program, which allows you to have the most common repairs done for a flat fee. I don't remember what that fee is at this point, but I paid $250 US several years ago for a cleaning and battery replacement. Or you can get a display that has easily replaceable batteries. Think about the ways you would use a display. Do you want one with a book reader and storage card? Do you want portability? I'm sorry I can't help you with the specific model you're considering, as I don't have any experience with it. Re: more questions about braille displays
I read lots of books with my Braille display using Kindle, iBooks, and Bard. I only read audio books when I can't get them in Braille or I don't want to pay. (or can't pay). I'm such a Braille fanatic that I use my Focus 40 Blue with my iPod. I was never sure I wanted to scroll a whole bunch with a small Braille display. So carrying around a 40-cell one is no big deal for me, as it might be with others. Of course, I'm still used to carrying around my Braille Lite 40, which is much heavier than a Focus 40 Blue. If there's a way you can try reading books with a display, or working with it otherwise, you might get a better idea of what you want to do by doing so. Re: My first clean install of Os X
Yes, I don't find myself biting my knuckles with Os X installs. It's quite nice. There is Braille support for USB only in recovery mode and with the installer. I contemplated doing a clean install and finally got round to doing this today. I thought I would share my experience after years of reinstalling Windows countless times. Fortunately the stuttering has gone away for now. Note I was using a flash drive to boot into the Os X Installer which I made thanks to a free program called Diskmakerx formally Lion Disc Maker. Let me stress that the entire process can be done completely independent of sight thanks to VoiceOver or be it a temporary copy if you like shipping with Os X Installer. The Fred voice is used which will remind you of Dectalk. Sure VoiceOver does not start automatically, never does, but pressing command-f5 is all you need to do to get the installer to talk. I believe Braille support is even included so even a deafblind person can do this. I got a bit lost in translation when it came to rebuilding my disk which I personally wanted to do so could really start fresh. Turned out all I had to do was choose 1 from the partition layout pop-up button, click apply and it does the rest including formatting the entire partition in this case. So intuitive! Because I was so used to Windows ways of reinstalling I thought I had to remove all partitions first. No wonder I wasn't getting anywhere as Os X doesn't work like that. The installation process was very straightforward indeed. Although for some reason it got stuck right at the end of preparing to install. I was on the landline at the time when the mac suddenly rebooted into the installer loaded on the newly created partition. Os X Installer took care of the rest. Finally I set up my new install again completely independent of sight as by this time you are in the actual Os X installation. You do not need to do anything at this point as after about a minute a prerecorded voice lets you know about VoiceOver and how to get started. All Macs do this whether just bought or after a clean install. So just follow the verbal propts and set up your mac. Hope you find this valuable. Re: Probably a Basic Question About Browsing folders in the Finder
Hi, David, The finder has three basic views: list view, column view, and icon browser. List view and column view are the most accessible. The list view has a table with fairly detailed information about each file. You can expand the folders from the table or use option-down-arrow to go into the focused folder and remain there while manipulating files. Column view is kind of like a tree view in Windows. Icon view is, I think, a grid that shows icons for your folders and files. So the table is for your list view, and the browser is either for column view or icon view. To get to these views on the fly, there are keyboard shortcuts: command-1 for icon view, command-2 for listview, and command-3 for column view. You can adjust a folders default view or the default view for all folders with command-J. I hope this helps. Re: Kudos to Apple Accessibility
Yes, I've felt comfortable enough with Apple Accessibility that I called and asked a curious question about editing Braille commands. The guy was interested enough that he had us do a screen-sharing session, because he didn't have access to a Braille display. We concluded that the only way to edit Braille commands was by using command-b first, but he offered to put in my suggestion for using the Braille display to edit commands as a feature request. I definitely wouldn't have felt comfortable initiating this with most other companies. This is the main reason I have Apple products. This is maddening in long lists of items like times. They responded immediately asking for an example of an app in which this occurs. It's easy to find in the calendar app. I reported such and got a very nice note back stating that the issue has been documented and passed to the appropriate department. Yeah, I know, that sounds like lip service but I don't think so. I think it actually got done. I also received detailed instructions for how to report the problem of VO losing focus on some IOS apps. I thought at first it was just the Amazon app but the more I explored the issue, it seems to happen to a lesser degree in other apps as well. I'll have more time this weekend to try the instructions and send a report. Have I ever heard from Dell when reporting things? Microsoft? rarely and then it is a cnned response. Yay Apple. Comparing VO Keystrokes in OS X and iOS?
Hi, all, If my poor old late 2009 Mac Mini doesn't have a fried logic board, I'll replace the hard drive so it can limp along for another year. If it's destined for the scrap heap, I'm going to get an iPad. I'll probably use a keyboard with it. I use a Braille display and the virtual keyboard with my iPod 5th gen and iOS currently. I'm wondering if a lot of the basic VO functions work the same with the same keystrokes, such as opening apps, text selection, etc.? Hmmm, thanks, Alex, that's an excellent suggestion. At the least, they are identical in terms of VO keystrokes, so hook a keyboard to the iPod and see what you think. I believe you said you have an iPod - if not, ignore me. smile No, command-tab won't work, but go-h is your home button; press h twice while holding down the vo keys and you are in the App Switcher. It is kind of similar to the Application Chooser on the Mac. Certainly it is far less convenient, but the option is there. I like having a full computer for apps the iOS platform can't run (Xcode, some nice Youtube apps, etc) but those aren't a concern for you. However, someone mentioned external drives, and that's a great point. Also, iOS lacks commanders, so no assigning frequently used actions or even ApleScripts to gestures or keystrokes. Overall, because of the shortcut key support in apps Not necessarily in VO) I find the Mac or a Windows machine more efficient to use. That's just me though. Finally, the new Macbook Airs, and even the Pros from the brief times I've felt them, have very little in the way of vents or other holes. They use solid state drives, so have no moving internal parts except for some amazingly quiet fans you really can't access (the Airs seem to have no fans, but I could be wrong). Debris, then, is really not as much of a concern, and of course they make a myriad of cases for all these devices. Re: Audio Hijack Pro
Welcome, Anders. Once you get the Audio Hijack application, you can set each kind of recording up in it. You can record streams while playing others. You would have to take a look at all of your settings for recording, etc. within the app. By default, Audio Hijack will exclude Voiceover from being recorded. Differences Between Sort By and Arrange By in Finder View Options?
Hi, all, I've arranged my downloads folder so it shows the most recently added items at the top. In the view options, accessed with command-j, I have both arrange by date added and sort by date added specified. What is the difference between these two options, if any. I'm reluctant to change these to find out, but I could try. I don't imagine it would hurt anything; I just have to remember what I need to do to reverse the setting. I'm lucky in that respect that my husband uses Windows. I borrow his computer when I need to update my Focus 40 Blue Classic. This is the only thing I truly rely on Windows to do. That is, after starting up from the thumb drive, go to Disk Utility and re-partition your drive to one partition named Macintosh HD. Any subsequent partitions should be done later on the live drive. This will ensure that the Recovery Partition is created properly. Not sure where the other individual got there info but this is sound practice. If you used DiskMaker X to create your bootable Mavericks Installer, on the thumb drive or the built-in “Create Install Media” utility of the Mavericks Installer, then a proper Recovery Partition will be automatically created. If you used the Disk Utility method, then the Recovery Partition must have already existed in order to create a proper installation. The problem in your case is that you need to do a total re-format, so, using the existing Recovery Partition is not of any benefit. Refer to http://www.macworld.com/article/2056561/how-to-make-a-bootable-mavericks-install-drive.html for info on these limitations. In addition, if you didn’t perform a complete wipe during your last clean install, these errors may have carried over thus any disk structure issues would have persisted. Hope this makes sense. As to wiping, I’m still not sure what to do. I mean, I know how to format the drive from the OS X on my thumb drive and then install, the question is, what do I do with my partitions? I have two, one Macintosh HD and one OS X Beta Partition. When I did a clean install back in March, I had only the Macintosh HD partition and so didn’t need to worry. I reformatted that partition, but didn’t actually erase it, as people I asked told me that completely erasing the Macintosh HD partition could turn out badly. Are you saying that I should format the entire drive, wiping out both partitions? If I do that, won’t it affect the installation of the OS, or will the installer partition as necessary? On Jun 6, 2014, at 12:43 AM, Tim Kilburn kilbu...@me.com wrote: Hi, For expediency purposes, I wouldn’t worry about re-mapping partitions etc., you’re just going to wipe the drive and re-partition anyway. Regarding grabbing those files, if you startup from your thumb drive, then go under it’s Apple menu to Startup Disk, you should be able to select the 10.9.3 beta partition as your startup disk. if things are OK in that area of the HD. Once you’ve started with that version of the OS, you could quickly get the files you want and place them onto whatever media you want. You could then go ahead and do the total wipe/re-partition and re-install from your 10.9.3 thumb drive. It’s best to do it from there since it needs to be done from a external source in order to completely reformat the drive. If you’re unable to startup from your beta partition, then the drive is in fairly rough shape and you’d either need to use Terminal commands to grab those files or just give up on them. HTH. I'm Confused About iTunes Movies and Audio Description
Ok, I'll try to be as clear about this as I can, but I'm a bit mixed up. Many DVDs nowadays have an optional audio description track, which is in the dVD menu. In the iTunes store, I notice two different kinds of movies. One says DVS: for blind viewers. The other would seem to be the equivalent of the standard release. If i play one of the second type, the audio is dimmed. Have the audio tracks been disabled because of copyright restrictions, or am I using the wrong setting in iTunes? Why would we need a special type of video file to get the audio description track? I've tried bringing up audio selections in iTunes from titles I know have been described by DVS. Re: How Accessible Would Getting to A Second OS X testPartition Be?
Thanks, Chris. Yes, I had that concern about the option-key method as well. The startup-disk option in Disk Utility sounds like a workable method. Thanks, teresa “Everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough.”—Richard P. Feynman On Jun 3, 2014, at 9:48 AM, 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries macvisionaries@googlegroups.com wrote: While I haven't tried it, you should be able to partition your drive to appear as two separate disks with disk utility. Depending on how full the current drive is you might be able to shrink the existing partition enough to make room for Yosemite. Then you would install Yosemite on that new drive. As far as switching startup drives, you should be able to do that by going to System Preferences and picking which drive to start from and then reboot. While you can also do this by holding down the option key while booting, I suspect that way is not accessible since there won't be an OS running yet to host voiceover. Re: What does Yosemite mean?
Hi, Kawal, Yosemite is a Native American word. It is the name of a national park in California in the United States. The next versions of oS X are named after famous places in California. The last one, Mavericks, was named after a well-known surfing location on the California coast. The phone calls will be routed through your phone, if you have one. I'm not sure if you can initiate one on your Mac and complete it on your device. I don't think you'll be able to make a phone call entirely on your Mac. admittedly, I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not as familiar with this option as others might be. Re: how to get vo to stop saying an annoying phrase?
You could create a VO activity just for Mail to stop the announcement. Wouldn't that work? Teresa Slow down; you'll get there faster. On May 30, 2014, at 2:42 PM, Tim Kilburn kilbu...@me.com wrote: Hi, This one is kind of frustrating either way. The setting you need to adjust is in the Verbosity pane in the Text tab. If you have VO set to speak the word for Links and attachments, then the Embedded is announced. So, modifying that setting to Do Nothing will stop the announcement of Embedded but you'll also not know if something is a link and such when on a web-page. Setting it to Tone will stop it from saying embedded as well, but you'll hear some clicking sounds instead. The best one I've found is setting it to Change Pitch, thus when links and such are spoken, the pitch will drop down a bit to that sexy deep voiced guy, or some manly sounding girl, when links and attachments are encountered. Getting my iPod to Appear Reliably in the iTunes Sources List?
Hi, all, This is a curious question prompted by something that's been nagging for awhile. I have iTunes WiFi sync turned on for my iPod Touch 5. When it's plugged into my mac, it's reliably present in the iTunes sources list. When I need to unplug it, I press command-e to eject it. At this point it disappears from the sources list and reappears randomly. Is this a bug, or is there a way to ensure that it will always be in the sources list? I'm composing this message using a 2008 iMac at work. In fact, I was in the AppleSeed program beta testing os 10.4 tiger, so I got to see VoiceOver in its infancy. It has really grown and matured since then. I even purchased a Mac Mini, but it was soon made obsolete when Apple switched to Intel processors. I'm planning to purchase a new Mac Mini later this year. Until then, I'll keep using Macs at work whenever possible. I'm also waiting to receive a 13-inch MacBook air to replace a 6-year-old Windows XP based laptop for work. I oversee technology for students and faculty with disabilities at a mid-sized public university. I work with faculty and students using both Macs and PCs, so I am trying to keep myself up-to-date in the Apple world. I have been a long-time user of Window-Eyes and more recently, NVDA. I've been an iPhone user since the summer of 2009, when Apple first included VoiceOver on the iOS platform. Going back even further, one of the first computers I used as a child was an apple 2e at school. At home, we first had a commodor 64 then later got an apple 2gs. So that's a little about me. Check with Freedom scientific for accessories. Otherwise, they might be sold on EBay. You'll definitely need a uSB0to-serial adapter. I think the model I use is discontinued. Keyboard Layout Different in login Screen: How to Change?

Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
I feel completely comfortable typing on my iPod with the onscreen keyboard. I don't think it's a practical way to do a lot of typing, as in editing documents, at least not for me. it will always be significantly slower than a keyboard. For most everyday uses, such as entering passwords and typing messages, it works just fine for me. I use touch typing mode. When I do a lot of editing, I use my Braille display keyboard. If I didn't have a braille display, I'd get a Bluetooth keyboard. Teresa On the other hand, there are different fingers. Personally, I don't particularly like to use a special program for this like, for instance, mBraill or Fleksy. I just want to use the regular keyboard. Dictation can be useful, but of course, sometimes, it's just nice to be able to type something relatively privately. I have built up some speed over the past 3 years, but I would like to get faster. I generally hold my phone in my left hand, and use my right index finger to type, anchoring my thumb down where the connector is at the bottom of the phone. I'm interested to know how others who type using the regular on-screen keyboard, enter your text. I do happen to use Touch Typing mode, but I would also be interested in what typing mode you use. And, does anyone else besides me just use the regular on-screen keyboard for their typing needs? Thanks!
