Re: Typing on the iPhone
That's like saying we should go back to DOS because we managed fine without it for a decade or two. Re: New Mac User
I've used a Mac for a good 7 or more years. Int time, I've used Windows, the Mac, and several forms of Linux. The Mac, nor VoiceOver, is perfect, but for me, especially for reading Mail, writing documents, or even dabbling in code, the Mac is great for beginners, and advanced users too. VoiceOver can hold your hand through any task. You'd lead it, of course, just like the iPhone, but it would help a lot. Once you're used to things, VoiceOver can be used in amazing ways, like only saying the subject of an and nothing more if you want, making going through email an absolute joy compared to the Windows screen readers. Also, one can move and resize windows, and even single controls. One can know if an app launches in the background. With the Mac itself, you can have time announced. Spell checking, are built in. Auto correct is a joy to use. All this could be done in Windows if Microsoft wanted, but it hasn't yet. So, for now, Mac is the operating system of the future, for general computing, until iPad takes place. Re: I've decided what brailleDisplay to Choose.
For those who have it, how long have you had it, and how have the dots held up? Any stuck pins? I've been reading the manual, and their are some parts where I could almost tell that English wasn't the writer's main language, and technically incomplete statements, like that Samsung Galaxy phones come with TalkBack: they come with Voice Assistant, as well as TalkBack. Also, with HIMS' site being aweful with images that just say "actilino 1.jpg," and such, really makes the product feel unprofessional. Also, an Applevis article from 2017 addressed other problems, like the Bluetooth audio not reconnecting with the braille display when it turns on, and a few other problems I can't recall right now. I know, no display is perfect, but I really want to like the Actilino, as its not Freedom Scientific, thus so JAWS centric, and may be supported with software updates longer and more frequent, I'd hope. Re: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe
This being the Mac list, well in name only now, lol, I do wish the Books app worked better when doing VO-a for read from current to bottum, like the iPhone does, turning pages as it reads and such. Now that that's out of the way, though, as I've said on the viphone list, I like good audio books, but once the narrator starts whispering or shouting, I'd much rather have the level, articulate tones of Alex. However, for whatever reason, until recently, I've never used the VoiceOver Samantha TTS engine to read an entire novel in the Kindle app. Not long ago, I was searching for a book in Audible, because it is not available on BARD or on Over Drive, and found it. The price of the audio book was $19, $17 in Apple books. Since the audio length of the book was just over 5 hours, I decided to see if a Kindle edition was available. Yes, it was and for a mere $1.99. So, I purchased the Kindle version and used my beloved Samantha TTS engine to read the novel. After I finished the Kindle version, a friend of mine purchased the audible version. So, I decided to give it a quick listen to see if I would like the book any better or less with a human narrator at the proverbial helm. You know what? I discovered that I actually preferred the Kindle version wit the TTS engine, better. The funny thing is, I am absolutely certain that I would have thoroughly enjoyed the human narrator edition had I not experienced the TTS engine rendition, first. Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few dollars. Re: Alex and irc text output on live speaking client (Textual 7) can't speak after 2 words requiring restart. Any way to restart just the speech itself?
