Hi Wayne,

When powering your machine back on, hold down command+r for a couple of minutes
to be certain you are going to boot into recovery mode. Then release the keys
and wait. You won’t have speech automatically here so what I usually do while
waiting is to try and activate voiceover with command+f5. If voiceover comes
on, it means I’m in the recovery mode. There you will find a table with
options. I think the last option in the table is disk utility. Position
voiceover cursor on it and continue. Once in disk utility you should be able
to find terminal in disk utility menu with the usual vo+m key combination.
Hope I can remember this right.

Good luck

Hi Wayne,

To do this you have 2 main options,

Firstly and simplist is ensure you have a network connection either wifi or
wired and then turn the machine off and then hold down the letter R key and
keep holding it for approx. 30 seconds while you turn the machine back on.

Once the machine has been on for approx. 1 minute try turning on vo with vo
keys and f5.

This should have put you in to the recovery console.

This will let you use disk utility on your main installation partition

Second option is to have a USB flash drive with a bootable installer for the OS
on it and start up your machine holding down the option key and then once the
drives show click on your USB flash drive and once the utilitys show up use
disk utility to wipe your machines HD
Oh and of course you will have to start VO up as before.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I may be wrong but in Disc Utility, in order to reformat a drive it’s the erase
tab you need as there is no dedicated format tab available. So you press the
erase tab and you will have to erase your chosen disc again and only then will
you be given a popup button where you choose the scheme.

Microsoft access line is great and they will help you install win 10 for you

Thunderbolt requires windows eight and leader, unfortunately. Looks like you'll
be upgrading to that version of Windows.

Hi all.
I thought, at the time of purchase, this would be the ideal solution for me. I
have an eleven inch Macbook Air, and so I'm limited on how many peripherals I
can connect. So, I purchased a Thunderbolt dock to offset this challenge. It
works fine under Mac OS, but will not work under Windows 7 on my Bootcamp
partition. I plugged it in while running Windows, with no results, so switched
to Mac OS and it works great. However, for the skae of my employer, I must run
Windows. When I plug the device in under Windows, I got the error that the
hardware had not been installed properly. I rebooted, and tried again. Now, in
the System Tray, I have an eject Hardware option, with the Thunderbolt Doc now
as an option to eject. However, even when plugging in a USB keyboard, Windows
doesn't appear to recognize that it's there. I also tried an external hard
drive. I can't find it under device manager to uninstall the driver, and there
doesn't seem to be much on Google regarding the subject. So, does anyone else
happen to know what I can do to fix this issue? Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks so much!
Scott

Sorry this is late, but I also had this problem with my MB Pro. Just take a Q

Sorry this is late, but I also had this problem with my MB Pro. Just take a Q
tip with the fuzzy stuff off and stick it in the hole for headphones. Not sure
how it does it but sometimes it will switch to digital input and will not
respond to a 3.5 jack. The Q tip will reset the jack back to default.

Hey Wayne. If you're not in a rush, I would hold off on installing Windows 10
especially with Fusion. According to this article from Cool Blind Tech, some
features of Windows 10 including Microsoft's new Edge browser aren't accessible
with most screen readers except for the current NVDA beta. So it's a question
of do you really need Windows 10 right now? Because if you don't, I'd suggest
waiting until all the bugs have been ironed out.

The easiest thing is probably a USB sound card. They can get quite small, and
should work well enough. Are you certain the jack has died, though, and not
just been muted? Remember that audio levels for speakers will be different from
headphones, so it's possible for the internal speakers to work but for the
headphones to not be making noise at all.

Team,

There is a difference between VPN and hiding your IP address. Unblocks is a
service that you can use to hide your address. You point your DNs to their
server and this is all you have to do. It is about $5.00 per month USA. This is
how I gain access to information on the net that blocks my IP address due to
location.

VPN’s will encrypt your traffic from your PC to the VPN server. Then it will
route the traffic unencrypted to the destination site if it is not on the VPN.

So be careful on what you want to achieve. If you want to just gain access to
content from TV providers and the like. Unblocks is the way to go.

The way I do multiple geographic VPN servers with Vypr is to simply set up
multiple profiles in iOS settings. From what I’ve heard of HMA, that’s
actually the right way to do it there, too, because every time you switch
region you need a fresh VPN profile. Indeed, if you can get the app to work
for you, Vypr are making a big thing of not needing that; you install a
profile just once, and they use DNS redirection to send you to the right
server according to your choice in the app.

My understanding is that HMA excels in server location diversity, whereas
Vypr is clearly very good at protocol support, better at privacy, and
delivers variable speeds (some people report it is the worst in their
benchmark tests for some regions). I, needing only the UK and Turkey, found
no difficulty there, because the connectivity is fine, but having fewer
servers means you do need to be close to a server in order to gain the
speeds. However I must tell you that I never did sign up for HMA. Vypr
simply met all my requirements, and the free trial checked out OK for me, so
I signed up for Basic for a year.

 Cheers,
 Sabahattin

If I remember how this works correctly, and forgive me. It's been a while
since I first downloaded the software, I think that you need to sign up before
given access to the download link. Have you done this yet? Trust me if not.
It's well worth it! I along with about 5 of my other blind friends, both
Windows, and Mac users use it, and we all swear by it! Trust me, I'd not steer
ya wrong. And, yes. They definitely do have a trial. I want to say it's 7
days, if I'm not mistaking. So, if you don't like it, no big deal. If nothing
else, no promises, but I might still have the dmg lying around. Just know
however if I do, you'll still have to sign up so that you can log the software
into your account.

Hello,

I wanted to draw your attention to HideMyAss VPN which is easy to configure on
the PC, MaC, IOS, I haven't tried it on Android. There is one argument for ease
of configuration vs. manual: If you wish to quickly switch between countries,
say, to stream German television and then switch to a UK IP for a BBC stream,
this can easily be done.

Finally, I have a question: For those who have tried both HideMyAss and Golden
Frog, how do they compare?

Regards,

Rajiv

Golden Frog VyprVPN are a bit on the expensive side, yes. You definitely get
what you pay for, though you will have to configure things manually if you want
to avoid the inaccessible iOS app. But it’s really quite easy to do that on iOS
and Mac; both support PPTP and L2TP+IPSec.

For anybody who wants to go for it, my affiliate link (free month service for
both of us) is:

Hi there.

I think you’d better inform yourself how this stuff works. Happily, there just
_happens_ to be a book on the subject, by a person that just _happens_ to be on
this list, and that just _happens_ to be targeted at the blind/VI, from Mosen
Consulting. It is paid, but it’s a great listen. Details here:
http://mosen.org/index.php/audiobook-imagine-theres-no-countries/

As to the legality claim, I think it’s best to take a wild guess, take a risk,
or check with your council. Certainly you are going against the wishes of the
Copyright holder; for the UK, the content is only for consumption by
licence-fee payers. I don’t agree with the author that geoblock avoidance is
that different from piracy, but I also heartily agree that it’s a very good
idea. The Internet is meant to be global, and if you can reach the content, I
think you’re entitled to it. Most VPN services are specifically targeted to
solving your problem; they let you connect to a server in the target country,
and essentially route your traffic by way of that server, hence giving you
access to material that is supposedly restricted to that region.

Have fun!

Cheers,

I use Golden Frog. They are expensive, but they’re very fast. They seem to be
affiliated with GigaNews, which goes some way to explaining their coverage and
speed. I also love their online control panels which really give you the edge.
The downside (there’s always a downside) is that their iOS app is absolutely
dreadful. Since I only need PPTP for geoblock avoidance and
anti-mobile-provider-DPI avoidance and since the server names are all very easy
to derive, this is fine with me, because every OS supports PPTP. The basic
account is perfectly adequate for my needs, and when I’ve got a server set up
at home, even that may no longer be necessary.

Hope it helps.

download their app you simply hit one button and sign in and tyhat’s it.They
also have a 30-day trial. I’m going to give a shot and I’ll let you knwo how I

Well, I guess Cloak is out! It was easy to sign up for the free trial and
install the software and from there it went downhill. I launched the app, it
came up and disappeared, and a little banner at the top of my apps list said
Cloak wanted to make changes and type my system password. I typed the first
letter of my password and OSX took me to the app that started with that letter.
I can’t figure out where to type my password, so I guess the search continues.

hides your ip address and you can tell it what country you live in.
Then you always look like you're surfing from whatervercountry you

Hi!
I think someone had this problem a while back but i can’t remember the
sollution.
All of a sudden audio has disappeared from the internal speakers.
I don’teven have the startup sound when starting my mac.
Connecting headphones gets audio through the headphones but evrytime i unplug
them audio stops working.
This is no big deal for me but its a bit annoying to have to use headphones
evrytime using my mac.
This is a mac mini mid 2011.
Ofcourse i have been trying plugging and unplugging headphones and also checked
whether my audio is set to 0 but its not.
I will dig through this really but if someone has ideas i’d appreaciate them.
Thanks in advance.

hello phil thanks but I managed to get sharp keys installed and I don’t have a

If you can configure your screen reader to use the insert key as its modifier
key, than there is an easy solution in Fusion settings. you can set a key, (I
and many others use the grave accent key), and have fusion send the VM an
insert key whenever you press your selected key.

JAWS and NVDA can be set to use the insert key instead of the caps lock key for
example.

In these cases, you don’t even need a key remap program like sharpkeys, you
just set fusion to send insert key instead of the selected key.

Again, this is the simplest way I know of. I currently use Sharpkeys to swap
the grave accent key with the caps lock key, but I’ve also used fusion settings
to send the insert key instead of the grave accent and set JAWS to use insert.
Works both ways.

What screen reader are you using, and why do you want to use the right alt key?
that would be a difficult if not impossible swap to make in the fusion settings
way.

I don’t have a direct answer for you but have a few things you could check.
The first thing I would try is to put your screen reader in key describe mode
to ensure you are hitting the alt key. The alt key would be the option key
unless you’ve mapped it to something else. There are other things to check
depending on how you have configured fusion.

alternative method to accomplish this task?
Usually, I can press “alt-I,” then the letter “M” for the comment feature,
either type or paste my comment into the edit field, then return back to
normal view by pressing “alt-V” and selecting the view feature.
However, in both Windows 7 and Windows XP this has not been possible, except
for the first comment, but all subsequent attempts fail.

Welcome any feedback others have concerning this issue.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

RE: super duper

2015-03-05 Thread wayne coles
hello yes I do to and find it easy to use and it covers all I need

From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com]
On Behalf Of Daniel Chavez
Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2015 6:20 PM
To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com
Subject: Re: super duper

I myself have not used carbon, but i do use SuperDuper.

Regarding your Partitions

You’re going to have a problem if you want to use Time Machine (TM) and
SuperDuper together.

Time Machine requires a partition of it’s own, or at least, 1 partition that
isn’t being used by anything else. The format of your TimeMachine partition is
fine, though you’ll have to either put your TM backup on another hard drive, or
not use Time Machine, period.

Booting from Super Duper is fine. It’s essentially considered another startup
disk, just as your Mac’s internal hard drive would be. Select your backup drive
in startup disk prefs, and click on restart. The Mac will boot off of your
SuperDuper disk like nothing happened.

hard Drive Space

SuperDuper images take up the size of your Mac’s Drive. So, if your Mac has a
1TB drive, it’s suggested you devote 1 partition of say a 2 partitioned drive
to Super Duper, that has at least 1TB. If you don’t, SuperDuper won’t back up
correctly.

There is a feature of Super Duper called Smart Update. Smart Update updates
what hasn’t been updated, and wastes no time trying to back up the entire
drive. It erases the partition you told it to copy to, and makes it like your
internal drive is. Meaning, whatever structure your internal mac HD has, that’s
what your external drive’s partition will look like, with the exception of,
SuperDuper is making that 1 partition bootable.

One Thing To Note

Warning! - Don’t Copy Files Manually To The Bootable Partition

If SuperDuper makes a backup, do not attempt copying files direct to the
partition. You’ll screw the partition up and make it not boot. Even if you went
into startup disk, once you copy files manually to the partition, you’ll mess
up the fact that the disk was ever bootable. For you to solve this problem, the
permanent fix would be for you to use SuperDuper’s smart update, which will
remake the disk bootable, based upon changed data on your Mac’s internal hD.

I hope my explaining helps you in a wise choice in what to buy.

To answer yourquestion about using Google Maps, this needs to be install on the
phone first. When you open Blind Square, you can search for a location or open
your My Places to select a destination. Once this is done, at the bottom of
the screen in portrait mode you will hear VO annouce route or something like
that. Double tap on this and a new screen will open. This is where you can
choose the navigation apps for GPS. The native map will be listed, as well as
any GPS apps that you have installed. Just double tap on one of them and the
GPS app will open. You then need to use the GPS app as if you had opened it on
its own. There are lots to learn about the app. I know that at applevis.com
there have been podcasts produce on how to use the app. I would do a search for
Blind Square to pull them up. HTH.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever heard of/used one of these, I never had
until someone recommended a site to me that I can't remember the name of now
and I found one there. I thought they would be a neat thing to have
especially sense there are times on occasion when I'm not finished listening
to my music on my computer, but everybody else is, and it's time for me to
take my shower, but the range on my regular auvio one goes out of range from
my room to the bathroom, which is right around the corner, which is
disturbing to me.
Over all though, I love the speaker compared to the big jambox speaker,
which I previewed at bestbuy, and wasn't that impressed with, but wish the
range on it were better, but I'm veering off topic here. Can anyone
recommend one of these shower speakers if you all use one, sense I've gone
on amazon, looked at them, and haven't even made it all the way through the
list, and found them to all of course have mixed reviews, and sense most of
them suction cup to the shower wall, which won't work here, sense my shower
wall isn't tiled, I don't know of a workaround to get one to stay up.

You also have access to Narrator in windows 7 which can be helpful to get

Well, I took my own oft-given advice and researched the question on
VMWare's Knowledge base. It looks fairly straight-forward. First put a
copy of the VM bundle (.vmwarevm file) on an external drive, or on the
desktop of the MBA, then in Fusion, select file/new/continue without
disk/ use existing Virtual disk.
Then navigate inside the .vmwarevm file, anselect the .vmdk file as
the virtual disk to use. There are lots of subfiles with the .vmdk
extension, but you want the master .vmdk.d
For example, there will be virtual a bunch of
virtual disk 00x.vmdk subfiles. you want the one without the 00x's.
Once the .vmdk is selected as the virtual disk to use, continue and
fusion will create a virtual machine from that virtual disk.

As the KB articles say, the process is identical to taking a disk
drive out of one physical machine and putting it in another as the
boot drive.

After installing Fusion on my new MBA, how do I move the windows7 VM
from my iMac to the MBA? Do I go through Fusion's import menu, or is
it a simple matter of copying the VM file from the iMac into the
VMWare directory on the MBA? The latter doesn't sound right to me, but
I thought the import menu was for VM's created in other programs like
parallels etc.

If it's a matter of transferring the VM file, I imagine it would be
necessary to turn off any machine dependent hardware connections in
the VM like camera, bluetooth etc first?

thanks

 Hello Wayne,

To access links in a mail message you can use the contextual menu
(VO+Shift+M), which gives you several options, including open link.
However, I generally interact with the mail messages area and use VO+Space to
open a link when my VoiceOver cursor is focused on it. For example, interact,
then VO+Down arrow or Down Arrow with Quick Nav to the link, and VO+Space to
open it. You can also use Quick Nav and web rotor shortcuts to move to the
next or previous hyperlink. I'm guessing that you just press Enter to read
your message. Interacting when you want to open a link will ensure your
 focus is on the link.

Hello Wayne,
Did you try interacting with the message before navigating to the link, as I
suggested? I'm guessing that you usually press enter to read mail messages
with your preview pane hidden. In that case your focus may not be exactly on
the link when you try your VO+Shift+M. Some people move off and on the link
again, then retry. However, if you want to reliably land on the link in a
message that contains links, interact first. Then VO+Space will open the
link, or you can also use VO+Shift+M if you want other options. You'll also
be able to use web rotor shortcuts like VO+Command+l to move to the next
hyperlink or Quck Nav single letter combinations. And you don't need to
interact if you only want to read messages, but it ensures that you will
land with your focus on the link you want. Interact, VO+Down arrow to link
and VO+Space to open the link in mail should work reliably on all systems,
even older versions of Mac OS X with limited memory, which was why I gave
those instructions in my earlier post,

 Hello Wayne,

To access links in a mail message you can use the contextual menu
(VO+Shift+M), which gives you several options, including open link.
However, I generally interact with the mail messages area and use VO+Space
to open a link when my VoiceOver cursor is focused on it. For example,
interact, then VO+Down arrow or Down Arrow with Quick Nav to the link, and
VO+Space to open it.  You can also use Quick Nav and web rotor shortcuts to
move to the next or previous hyperlink. I'm guessing that you just press
Enter to read your message.  Interacting when you want to open a link will
ensure your focus is on the link.

all you can - read the help files thoroughly, and search around in the
 VMWare support pages.

For example, you can either import a bootcamp into VMWare as a virtual
machine, or simply run the bootcamp from VMWare fusion. I don't have
the exact details, but search around on VMWare site and in the help
files and you'll find the answers.

Re: vo to caps lock

2013-07-26 Thread Wayne Coles
hello thank you for the links but how do i click on the links in the message
thanks in advance
On 26 Jul 2013, at 20:05, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote:

 Hello Wayne and Chris,

Wayne is asking about using KeyRemap4MacBook, which was the subject of an
AppleVis podcast by Eric Caron on how to remap the Control+Option commands to
the caps lock key for use with VoiceOver on the Mac, with additional
instructions on how to get this to work as an insert key for JAWS under
VMWare fusion. Any attempts to remap the caps lock key on the Mac requires
the KeyRemap4MacBook application and the PCKeyboardHack file from the same
 web site:
 http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/
 and
 http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/pckeyboardhack-usage.html.en
I think the point of confusion is that this is not an application dedicated
to turning the caps lock key into VO keys, but a general key remapping
application for the Mac. As such, the user would still need specific
instructions on how to remap caps lock to the Control+Option keys. And any
post that gave those details would also provide links to the necessary files.
I'll give links to two of my mail archive posts that provide links to the
relevant AppleVis podcast and guide posts, and also to some more sources of
information about using KeyRemap4MacBook to configure the Mac (laptop or
Bluetooth) keyboard for use with Windows under VMWare fusion:
 • Use KeyRemap4MacBook to remap the insert key to Caps Lock [was Re: The
 insert key in VMware fusion]
 http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg84983.html
 • Re: VO keys needed in VM
 http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg89672.html

The first linked mail archive post gives links to Eric's podcast and user
guide for remapping the caps lock key at the AppleVis site, but also explains
why some other solutions for remapping the caps lock key (for use as a
modifier key for Windows under VMWare fusion) don't work. The second linked
mail archive post gives links to blog posts at the Flint's Geekiness web
site that describe how to modify Eric's instructions for the current version
of KeyRemap4MacBook. If you don't need any background information about the
layout of KeyRemap4MacBook, how to navigate it for general use, or to listen
to a podcast, then you can go directly to the first linked Flint's
Geekiness blog post in my second linked archive post and follow its
instructions. And you can ignore the links I gave to the following two posts
at that site, which are about configuring other settings under the VMWare
Fusion preferences for Windows operation to eliminate conflicting Mac key
definitions. However, for most users, I'd recommend listening to Eric's
podcast and reading through the user guide and comments at AppleVis. The
main thing that changed in the new version of the KeyRemap4MacBook setup last
September is that the instructions now apply to navigating within the app
itself, and not to separate preference panes under System Preferences. You
also no longer have to get a special developer version of KeyRemap4MacBook,
since all the changes were incorporated into the current version. What Eric
did not detail was different ways of avoiding conflicts with Mac key
definitions for Windows under VMWare Fusion, since that is somewhat user
specific and really about setting up Windows use under VMWare Fusion. The
two remaining linked posts in the Flint's Geekiness blog describe how that
can be handled under VMWare Fusion's preferences. As far as I know, there's
been no reference to those blog posts on this list, since Jeffrey Shockley
provided the first link in response to Phil's question about ways to get an
insert key for JAWS under VMWare fusion, but Phil ultimately used Sharp Keys
to remap his insert key, and did not remap the caps lock key at all.

HTH. Probably other Windows users on this list can help with further
information, since I don't use VMWare fusion, Windows, or JAWS on my Mac.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Hi, all,

Excuse the cross-post; however this applies to both lists. I think it would
be fun to start a list for accessible IOS games. I'm stuck on level X, can
someone help me? I can't figure out how to play X game. Those would be
typical topics. Or you could even gloat. :) I have loads of time on my hands
for the foreseeable future, and I can definitely fit a list in. How much
interest would there be?
