Hi,

is anyone aware of a very sophisticated and accessible calculator for the Mac?
A blind pupil asked for one which can draw curves on the fly based on the
entered formular and can make changes on the fly. There seems to exist such an
app for blind Windows users.

Thanks and all the best

Chris,
I understand. We have people here with varying levels of experience.
Some must have been born with a Mac in their hands and those are the

Two ways. First, you don't need the calculator for simple things:
open Spotlight with cmd-space, and type a calculation. 2-4 will
yield -2, and 4^4 (4 to the fourth power) will yield 256. You can
use parentheses, plus/minus/multiply/divide, powers, and negative
numbers all from Spotlight. The asterisk is multiply, the slash is
divide, dash is minus/negative, and plus is plus. You just type the
calculation--no need to hit enter--and after a second, VO will say
the answer.

If you still need to use the calculator, open it and you'll be on
the "0", which is the display. Type your calculation and press enter
to hear the result. You can then do more calculations, and if you
don't type another number before the symbol (plus, minus, etc), the
value displayed is used. You can use the number pad with no problem,
but VO won't announce the symbol you enter for some reason. It will
announce the numbers, though.

Re: Calculator on the Mac.

2016-03-06 Thread E.T.

Alex,
I remember now why I do not have those options checked. Don't need
two voices speaking at me at the same time.

I can see why the lack of feedback when pressing the plus minus
multiply and divide symbols is disconcerting.

That's odd. I don't have either option checked, and VO announces the
result when I press enter. I never move from the input window where I
land when the app first opens--maybe that's why? Either way, I nearly
always use Spotlight, which is faster to get to and doesn't need a
separate app. It's not as powerful, but if you just need to run a quick
calculation or two, it can't be beat for simplicity.

that's cool, Alex! I've never used Spotlight for calculations. thanks for the
tip, you're right, it's much easier than going into the calculator app.

That's odd. I don't have either option checked, and VO announces the result
when I press enter. I never move from the input window where I land when the
app first opens--maybe that's why? Either way, I nearly always use Spotlight,
which is faster to get to and doesn't need a separate app. It's not as
powerful, but if you just need to run a quick calculation or two, it can't be

First of all, you're making this way harder than it has to be.

Open up Calculator.

Now, hit vo+M to go to your menu bar, and go to the speech menu. In here,
check both options. The first is speak button pressed, and the second is speak
result.

Now, simply type the equasion on your keyboard. The return key will act as
your equals key.

You were asking about the subtraction minus key. Type the following, for
example,

24-12

  Subject: Calculator on the Mac.

  Hello.

Last night I ventured to use Calculator on my I Mac as I had always used the
Calculator on my I phone. What ever I did, I could not find the subtract,
multiply but could find the Plus. I even put the Keyboard help on with VO K as
I thought I’d get to know where the multiply was. So if anyone has used the
calculator on the Mac, please could you give me some instructions as how I
should use it please? I also have a Mac mini and use the Apple USB keyboard
and so I hope I can use it in the same way when I use the calculator on my Mac
Mini as well. Logically I would have thought that Apple would have designed
the calculator on the Mac in the same way as the calculator on the I phone.

  Thanks.

Pressing your delete key, (backspace on a non full sized keyboard,) should
act as your all clear.

I don't normally use the calculator on the mac, but trust me. It's
incredibly doable.

Thanks so much. As the dash did not announce subtract, I thought the
calculator was not working on the Mac. Much appreciate both responses.

Re: Calculator on the Mac.

2016-03-06 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi,

In calculater:
keyboard + is for adition.
Keyboard - is for subtraction.
Keyboard * is for multiplication.
Keyboard / is for division.
Keyboard = is for calculating the line.
keyboard escape is for clear.

So, you want to stay on top of the line that shows your calculation and just
keep calculating.

Best,

Erik Burggraaf

Re: Calculator on the Mac.

2016-03-06 Thread Alex Hall
Two ways. First, you don't need the calculator for simple things: open
Spotlight with cmd-space, and type a calculation. 2-4 will yield -2, and 4^4 (4
to the fourth power) will yield 256. You can use parentheses,
plus/minus/multiply/divide, powers, and negative numbers all from Spotlight.
The asterisk is multiply, the slash is divide, dash is minus/negative, and plus
is plus. You just type the calculation--no need to hit enter--and after a
second, VO will say the answer.

If you still need to use the calculator, open it and you'll be on the "0",
which is the display. Type your calculation and press enter to hear the result.
You can then do more calculations, and if you don't type another number before
the symbol (plus, minus, etc), the value displayed is used. You can use the
number pad with no problem, but VO won't announce the symbol you enter for some
reason. It will announce the numbers, though.
