Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-08-01 Thread Julie Rattray
Hi,

I have used it a bit and whilst it can do some really useful stuff - I got some
of my students to use it to create a writing frame for an essay so they could
think about structure. It does have limits when you are asking about certain
topics and it gets things wrong - this is because it is text based and works on
the idea of common language patterns etc so it is a language generator - it
doesn’t search the web in that sense for information from different websites.
So it makes mistakes - it told me I wrote an academic paper that I didn’t
actually write - I wrote something similar but not the one it suggested.

We have been talking about it a lot at work because it has opened up a huge
debate in Higher education about its use by students for essay writing etc -
what I would say for now is that it can generate a not bad undergraduate
descriptive essay but not anything too sophisticated. I did get it - as a trial
- to create a conference presentation for me - but actually when you read
through it it just kept repeating the same idea over and over with different
phrasing.

Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-11 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Karen,

I also realized something else after I sent this message. You’re referring to
people trying to write in the style of someone or something else. I’m
referring to writers using Chat GPT as a tool to spark their own creativity or
help to push their way through writers’ block, not imitate others. Where
imitating others is concerned, I agree. Chat GPT will use very defined
parameters to create something in that style, and hence it is not particularly
abstract. That’s a different prompt than something like, “explain the
motivation of Jane, who has recently learned that she can fly, but has decided
she does not want to do so.” In the latter case I’m not referring back to a
previous work or style, I’m just asking Chat GPT to generate ideas.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Karen,

The fact that you insist that Chat GPT doesn’t deal with the abstract surprises
me. The fact that it can deal with the abstract is one of the factors that
makes it, as Gabe put it, both intriguing and alarming. You asked me to search
for articles. Here is an article that you may find interesting:

The program is not created for independent thought.
It is created to piece together the thoughts, information so forth from
others.
The same question over and over? perhaps. Abstract? no, fortunately,
because that keeps human touch in place.

Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-11 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mark,

I have both the Chat GPT and the Call Annie apps on my phone. I can’t say I’ve
found either to be amazing, but I’m not really in need of an AI friend—Call
Annie—and so far I don’t feel like I have a ton of uses for Chat GPT. My
advice would be to play around with it and see what you think. I have found
that with Chat GPT, especially with more abstract questions, it can be useful
to ask the same question multiple times.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-10 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

I don't have it but one of my colleagues at work does and we've played around
with it. I've seen it do anything from write a song to plan a 3-day tour of San
Francisco to write a scary good outline of a speech on universal accessibility
and only take a couple of seconds for any of them.

I also saw a demonstration a while back of the AI ability for Be My Eys that is
still in beta. It did a great job not only describing a picture but you could
interact and ask follow-up questions.

I keep saying that as a blind person I'm pretty exçited about what this
technology can do but as a human I find it pretty scary. LOL

Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Just so you know, I am posting this to both lists.

So I keep running into all kinds of news articles on Chat GPT, a product
from the Open A I project.

Has anyone downloaded the app from the App Store and, if so, are you finding
it as amazing as some of the news reporters from USA Today and the
Wallstreet Journal?

I went to the website at chat.openai.com to see what I could find. I did
not find much; I'll have to download the app to really check it out.

Oh, the article I read today, in the Apple News app talked about how Chat
GPT planned the writer's vacation itinerary and did a pretty good job of it,
apparently.

I look forward to reading your replies,

Mark
