2022-11-02 Thread Mike Arrigo
On Apple Silicon macs, the only way to run Windows is to use Parallels, and
unfortunately that software is completely inaccessible with Voiceover. Also you
would need to run Windows for Arm processors which at this time is basically in
beta, also not sure whether any of the screen readers would work with it. If
you have an Apple silicon Mac, you would be better off getting a separate PC.

You can try using a virtual machine to run Windows.
The hardest part is registering for a free account, then log in to find your
serial number.
You can get a free for home use account at

Ok, how short of a time can I do this without purchasing a license, and where
can I find a step-by-step guide to do this with Voiceover?

Re: Installing windows on a Mac.

2022-11-02 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Hi,
You can install windows 10 using Boot Camp.
You do not need to purchase a windows license.
It will install without it, allowing you
To add it later.
And if you only need windows for a short time, It should be OK. And if you can,
just use NVDA, or a 40 minute demo of Jaws.

This is a 2017 MacBook I would be attempting this on, and I unfortunately can’t
afford anything additional at this point, sense my last few paychecks have been
extremely slim. So just as I suspected, this may be something I’ll have to run

Provided you have an Intel Mac, you can use Bootcamp. Unfortunately, you will
have to purchase Windows and I don’t know the cost. It may not be so bad though
as you will need Windows 10. M1 Mac you will need a completely different set up

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-08 Thread Terje Strømberg
When using Fusion it should be possible. Chose to save the Windows.exe file or
what the name is on the external drive during the Fusion installation first
maybe and then also the windows.exe file of course. Remember i could do that a
while back. At least, the windows.exe started from the external drive. Don’t
have at the moment, but will install fusion etc. at the end of this year.

If you try the guide linked, let me know if it works. Read the comments from
users below the guide on the site.

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-08 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
VMWare Fusion, like most virtualization systems, stores all the Windows
data on a fake C drive which shows up on the Mac side as a giant
multi-GB file which grows as you store more stuff on the Windows side.
That package file can be placed anywhere you want, including external
drives. VMWare might ask you if you moved or copied it when you do but
after that it should work just fine. You can also tell it where to
create a new virtual machine and just point it to your external drive. A
NAS drive would probably also work but it might be kind of slow compared
to a local drive.

When using Fusion it should be possible. Chose to save the Windows.exe file or
what the name is on the external drive during the Fusion installation first
maybe and then also the windows.exe file of course. Remember i could do that a

have at the moment, but will install fusion etc. at the end of this year.

If you try the guide linked, let me know if it works. Read the comments from

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-06 Thread Eileen

Hello,

Those podcasts are good if you are running a 32 bit machine. The talking
installer will not work on a 64 bit one. I went that route before having to
think out of the box solutions. On CoolBlindTeh, there's another podcast with
Cory using a product called Winstaller (I think that's the name). I didn't
check to confirm before posting. There's a cost involved and you need to create
the talking portion on a Windows machine. After listening to the podcast, I
thought it was a bit over my head and I had once installed Windows through
BootCamp with sighted assistance. Hence, I was well acquainted with the
process. Like I said in an earlier post, I did read the article posted on
Applevis on how to install Windows without sighted assistance, but really used
it as a guideline along with the apps mentioned on my phone.

Best,
Eileen

process where you had to select the default partition and format it to
ntfs before continueing?

the unattended xlm file route doesn't work for seven for me as it
totally erased my drive by default. That option worked great for
installing win xp via bootcamp but I take it that is no longer an
option for windows seven or later?

Thanks,

Cameron.

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-05 Thread Eileen
Hello,

The partition is completed in the bootcamp assistant while you have speech from
voiceover: I used a variety of apps from my iPhone6 including: KNFB Reader,
BeMyEyes, and Facetime. With the KNFB Reader, I increased the brightness to
100%. I was able to capture the text on the screen. I used BeMyEyes to confirm
that I was on the right drive and to format it correctly. However, the issue
that I came into into was that I couldn't get the cursor down into the
right-hand corner to press the next button. That's when I changed to using
Facetime. Also, on Applevis there's an article on how to install Windows
without sight to bootcamp. Although the sequence of the dialog screens in 8.1
were not in the same order, it gave me the keystrokes to use. Hth.

Best,
Eileen

The first one it is accessible if you use the startup disk method. If
you use the hold the option key at startup method then you have to kind
of guess the order of the boot menu. If I am correct OS X can read from
but not write to NTFS partitions while Windows can read from but not
write to HFS partitions.

Re: Installing windows on my mac using bootcamp

2014-08-19 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

Here are my solutions to accessing files or folders from one OS to another.
Since Dropbox is pretty much full, I installed One Drive in both the Windows
bootcamp, the Mac side and on my iOS device. This Way I can have access to my
work folders on all platforms. For some reason, it has been easier for me to
boot into the bootcamp side and go to the system prreferences and reboot to the
Mac side from there. When on the Mac side, I activate system preferences, go to
the start up option and select it VO-SPACEBAR. I then make the change from
there. I hope this makes sense to you. I began to try to select the OS by
holding down the option key at start up, but there were too many times that I
ended up in noman's land. The one thing that a friend told me is that if you
turn on VO with Command-F 5, you will have speech. Then I was always able to
get myself out of any irreversible damage. HTH.

Re: Installing windows on my mac using bootcamp

2014-08-19 Thread Rob

Hi,
When I installed BootCamp, it became listed as 1 of 3.
for example, when I boot, after hearing the apple startup sound, I hold
the option key for about 14 seconds then release it.

the choose drive screen is loaded.
From left to right there are three options to choose.
the first if BootCamp
second is recovery
and the third is Mac.
Since my Mac is setup to start in the Mac OS, the third option is
selected. so I press the right arrow once to move from the third option
to the first option wich is windows boot camp.

Or I can press left arrow once to get to the recovery drive.
Its really easy to do.

2014-08-19 Thread Rob

Hi,
there are 2 podcasts on
AppleVis.com doing a demo of installing BootCamp.
and below is what I did to install windows 7 bootcamp.
Things you will need.
1. USB drive to download the windows bootcamp drivers
2. windows install DVD
3. windows 7 talking PE disk from www.bryansmart.com
the mega disk contains the NVDA screen reader and all windows 7 installers.
4. you want be able to hear NVDA before installing the windows bootcamp
drivers, so you will need a external USB sound card.

I found one at WalMart for about $10.

Dear List,
I solved the problem of BootCamp not creating a partition asking for
the windows 7 install disk.
I downloaded a windows 7 ISo and put it in my DVD drive. that allowed
BootCamp to continue to create the partition.
the mac rebooted before I could eject the win7 install disk. so it
loaded the install disk and the only way I could eject it was to restart
the mac and hold the option key at the mac startup sound. I then could
eject the disk and insert the win 7 PE talking install disk.once I
restarted the mac NVDA came up talking and I was able to install windows 7.

My $10 external Sabrent sound card from WalMart worked great.
Thanks Rob,

I downloaded a windows 7 ISo and put it in my DVD drive. that allowed
BootCamp to continue to create the partition.
the mac rebooted before I could eject the win7 install disk. so it loaded the
install disk and the only way I could eject it was to restart the mac and
hold the option key at the mac startup sound. I then could eject the disk and
insert the win 7 PE talking install disk.once I restarted the mac NVDA came
up talking and I was able to install windows 7.
My $10 external Sabrent sound card from WalMart worked great.
 Thanks Rob,
