Prizmo Go is free, does the processing on the iPhone or iPad, and is actually 
better than KNFB Reader, except that it does not import PDF images.

Well, that's technically not true about the not-free thing, but it 
depends on what you want to use OCR for. If you're talking about using 
it for on-screen stuff, there's one and only one solution: VOCR. If 
you're talking about converting scanned material to text, then yes, 
Abbyy is your new best friend.

I concur with E.T.. Abbyy Fine Reader is probably the best application for OS X 
so far as OCR goes. It is comparable to Kurtzweil 1000 for windows. 

There are quite a few options so far as OCR goes. Some of the apps are free, 
but most of those aren't very good. there are a couple in the app store that 
require a network connection as they scan and upload to a remote server for 
processing. Those are relatively cheap (given the price ecology of anything OS 
X, any amount under $100 is relatively cheap).

anyway, there are a few apps on the app store you can take a look at.

What I did is probably a bit unconventional...I found an online OCR service, 
paid for credits for OCR, created a script to use their API, and just feed 
images or PDFs or whatever through that script to get the OCR output. Works 
really well for me :D
