RE: Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Terri,

 Firstly welcome to the list,
To anser one of your later questions, to get learning knowledge for using a
mac,
This is probably one of the better places to get information regarding learnin
how to use a mac.

Some great and very knowledgable people here.

As for the mac, depending on how old it is yeah why not.

If you had a model number then we could possibly tell you more but Yosemite is
a nice version of the OS and would be ok to learn on,
Most of what can be done on the newer 2 operating system versions after
Yosemite can be done on that version as things pretty much stay the same.

Batteries can be replaced in the majority of cases and shouldn't be hard to
replace.

If the machine is being given to you then it's not a bad deal in my book and
would be a good learning point until yoru in a situation to purchase a newer
device.

iPads and iPhones are similar in themselves but the mac os is different
however with VO setup correctly you can use the mouse or track pad like an
iPhone or iPad screan and they all work great toghether.

Hope that helps if you can get the model or year / period for when the device
was released we could advise you on more.

Cheers,

Simon F

Hello everyone,

I joined this list to get some information I am not sure where to get anywhere
else.

A great friend of mine has a Mac laptop. I'm not sure which one, as she didn't
say. I am assuming there are different ones?

She hardly uses it, and has cleaned her stuff off of it. She wants to give it
to me as a gift, because she just really never used it.
She says that it can't be upgraded, and that the battery is bad.
But this part really doesn't concern me all that much. My windows 7 laptop has
a useless battery.

But here is where I am concerned.
Even though she is giving it to me as a gift, should I consider accepting it?

What happens if I can't upgrade it?
It's running Yosemite.

I have wanted a mac for years! But due to how much they unfortunately cost, my
chances of actually ever having one, is rare.

But if I get this Mac from my friend, what could I do with it?
If it can't be upgraded, won't most Apps no longer work?
Also, what sorts of things can I do with the mac?
What kinds of programs can I put on to it?

And last but not least, if I've never used one before, how do I even begin to
learn how to do this?

I have an Iphone 5S, and an Ipad mini4th Generation.
But I would imagine that the mac works way differently from those. And I know
without a doubt it's way different from my laptop running windows.

If anyone could give me any thoughts, or suggestions, I would more than
appreciate it.
Also, any sites that might be helpful to know about, will also be appreciated.
I go to get the mac, if I want it, this Saturday.

Thank you,

Terri

Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I joined this list to get some information I am not sure where to get
anywhere else.

A great friend of mine has a Mac laptop. I'm not sure which one, as she
didn't say. I am assuming there are different ones?

She hardly uses it, and has cleaned her stuff off of it. She wants to
give it to me as a gift, because she just really never used it.
She says that it can't be upgraded, and that the battery is bad.
But this part really doesn't concern me all that much. My windows 7
laptop has a useless battery.

But here is where I am concerned.
Even though she is giving it to me as a gift, should I consider
accepting it?

What happens if I can't upgrade it?
It's running Yosemite.

I have wanted a mac for years! But due to how much they unfortunately
cost, my chances of actually ever having one, is rare.

But if I get this Mac from my friend, what could I do with it?
If it can't be upgraded, won't most Apps no longer work?
Also, what sorts of things can I do with the mac?
What kinds of programs can I put on to it?

And last but not least, if I've never used one before, how do I even
begin to learn how to do this?

I have an Iphone 5S, and an Ipad mini4th Generation.
But I would imagine that the mac works way differently from those. And I
know without a doubt it's way different from my laptop running windows.

If anyone could give me any thoughts, or suggestions, I would more than
appreciate it.
Also, any sites that might be helpful to know about, will also be
appreciated.
I go to get the mac, if I want it, this Saturday.

Thank you,

Terri
