RE: Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Paul,

If you wish to securely wipe your drive then you are best to start the machine
up from a USB or DVD installation disk then run disk utilities from that USB or
dvd media then secure wipe the machines internal drive
And once that is done install the OS to a basic installation and I would stop
at the point where you get asked for the country

This being the point the new user would start the machines setup from.

The reason behind the secure boot from external media is because you can't
secure wipe a drive you are running from.

Good luck.

Subject: Preparing a Mac for disposal

Hi Andrew and Nickus,
Many thanks for your help. I hope to sell or give away the old Mac but if no
one wants it I will have it recycled.
I am a bit paranoid about security and so want to be sure that all my private
data is really gone before moving the Mac on. So can I use the disk utility
part of the recovery manager to securely erase my hard disk and then use the
Install Mac OS part of the recovery manager to re-install El Capitan? Or if I
just use the Install Mac OS part of the recovery manager does that also
reformat my hard disk so that I do not need to use the disk utility?
Best regards…

Re: Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

When you go to re-format your hard disk drive, you should be able to find an
option to “safely erase” it. This is assuming you have a hard disk and not an
SSD. The save erase function does not just mark all sectors as being empty, but
also makes several write passes over each sector of the disk to ensure it can
not be brought to a disk forensics shop for recovery
If you can’t find this option directly, feel free to ask Apple or somebody on
this list can do some research. I haven’t tried to do this in five years, and
disk utility did have some of its functionality removed to make in more
intuitive / simpler to use.
Best Wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-27 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi Paul
Do you plan to give this Mac to someone else or do you plan to have it
destroyed and recycled?

If you plan to have it destroyed and recycled, then simply format the hard
drive using disc utility, remember to choose the highest security option so.
that it formats the hard drive and rewrites the entire drive with 0’s.

Also remember to sign out of your iCloud account and also your iTunes before
doing this.

As far as I know you can take the Mac to a Apple Store and they will recycle it
in the correct manor.

Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-26 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am preparing a 2008 iMac for disposal. It is running Mac OS 10.11.6. It has
a. 319 GB hard disk. I need to reformat that disk to get rid of all private
data and then re-install Mac OS. I have to use wifi to connect the iMac to the
internet.
I found the Apple info on this rather confusing.
I tried pressing option-command-r during startup and got to the recovery
utility via the internet. That ddid not seem to offer a way to erase my hard
disk other than via disk utility. IF I use disk utility to erase the hard disk
then will recovery utility still run? Note that I do not seem to have a
recovery partition on my hard disk.

Could I instead just delete the contents of my Library, Documents, Music, and
Pictures folders and then re-install Mac OS from the App Store? If I delete the
contents of the Library folder will Mac OS still run?

What is the easiest way to prepare my Mac for disposal using VoiceOver?

Many thanks….

Paul Hopewell
