Question about speech recognition on the mac

2011-11-01 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
So I know there is speech recognition on the mac, and I have quite a few
questions about it.

1. Is it compatible with Voice Over?
2. How does it work with VO?
3. How good is the quality of it, how is it with picking up your words and
writing them correctly.

Thanks.

Becky,

THe built in speech recognition on the Macintosh does not recognize words, it
recognises phrases. So you could for example hold down the escape key and say
switch to system preferences You would then hear a click and System
Preferences would be launched. If you want dictation, then you would need to
buy Dragon for the Macintosh. I know that jsay has optimized Dragon for
Windows, but I don't know if that was just making key commands or what.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Question about speech recognition on the mac

2011-11-01 Thread Robert Nelson
Dear Friends,

I am using Snow Leopard on an IMac.friend of mine, has suffered a loss of
finger dexterity. She is blind I thought the native spreech recognition
software on the IMac would be useful. The speech recognition software is also
known as Speakable Items. It is found on the Speech Pane of System
Preferences. It can recognize single words, but the Help window suggests
phrases of at least three words. I have found that it can recognize for
instance a single three syllable word without a accompanying phrase. It allows
for instance any command whether in an application, VoiceOver, or the keyboard
commands for the operating system in this case , Snow Leopard, itself. some of
the commands like Get Mail Have been already made speakable. However none
of the VoiceOver commands have been made speakable.

The process for making any keyboard command speakable with VoiceOver on is a
little troblesome since you need to have VoiceOver turned off when you enter in
the edit box the keystrokes for the requisite Keyboard command.

to turn the microphone on for the voice command, you can either designate a
key or make it voice actuated, where upon you give the computer a name such as
IMac or whatever.

My own experience with it has beendisappointing. Sometimes I have to
repeat the command phrase seven or eight times before it recognizes it.
Sometimes I will say Open Safari and Text Edit or Address Book opens up..
And sometimes it works just fine. Even when it recognizes the command phrase
corectly there is a couple of seconds of lag time seemingly before it executes
the command. Entering the keyboard commands is certainly faster.

For those of us who do not have good dexterity Speakable Commands is
certainly a feasible option.

There is no conflict with VoiceOver per se. You just got to make sure that
VoiceOver is not speaking when you are issuing a command.

I would like to hear from anyone who regularly uses Speakable Items. I
would like to know if they have been able to improve it's ability to recognize
or improve it's response time.

Sincerely Yours,
robert
