Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-11 Thread Phil Halton
It’s no longer a problem for me anyway Christine, I found the way to block his
email address from the list inbox. I’ll just have to forgo the benefit of
Rameys communications.

2020-05-07 Thread Phil Halton
On iOS, and any and all mention of Remy‘s name, I hear it’s spoken first in
English, and then in a second voice it is spoken in Arabic. So I’m getting an
echo. And that’s a little annoying. It’s got nothing to do with race religion
color creed or anything like that it’s just I’m getting a damn echo and it’s
only with his name and that’s why I’m asking. Comprende?

RE: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I’m sorry I can’t see what the issue is!?

I’ve seen the Arabic text and not worried about it,
I hear his name and it all just sounds like what I hear with everyone elses
emails,

I personally think people need to relax a bit more and not be so judgemental
about things that are really not getting annoyed about.

I wrote the above in textedit and saved it as bj.html (after making sure it was
a plain text file). When I opened that file in Safari, VO read it in a French
voice. I then copies the entire HTML page and pasted it below, I believe it
will still use my English synthesizer.
I even tried changing the spell check to French which is enough on Microsoft
Word to change the language. So, I don't know how one writes multi-lingual text
on Mac and have VO recognize it.

2020-05-06 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for chiming in. Yes, you’re totally correct for proper use in HTML, but
for Ramy’s Arabic name pronounciation, he does not have the html coded into his
name. In iOS and iPadOS, it simply pronounces the Arabic spelling with an
Arabic voice and accent. Supposedly, this is now what should happen in MacOS
as well. I did some testing after getting a good hint from your contribution
and did some testing with the below html:

This is in English
BonJour. Je m'apple Tim. Comment ca va aujourd'hui?
This will be in French
BonJour. Je m'apple Tim. Comment ca va
aujourd'hui?

The first paragraph with the French phrase is spoken by VO as English
pronunciation of the French words. The second paragraph with the language
specification is spoken in French, unless you interact with the item. Once
interacted with, it is just spoken as English pronunciation of French once
again.

It may be much more complicated than I originally posted, but it seems to me
that the MacOS is not currently handling this as well as iOS and iPadOS, even
though I believe it is supposed to.

Also, Ramy, if you prefer having the Arabic spelling included as part of your
name, then all the power to you. There is no way that you should feel like you
need to suppress your identity or culture. I hope that all this conversation
back and forth has not offended you at all. My hope is to make the Mac do what
it is supposed to and, therefore, pronounce your Arabic spelling properly.

Later…

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-06 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Unfortunately it isn't enough to just throw in a foreign language, you need to
indicate it is a different language. in HTML you would usually use a span tag
for this.
BonJour
I wrote the above in textedit and saved it as bj.html (after making sure it was
a plain text file). When I opened that file in Safari, VO read it in a French
voice. I then copies the entire HTML page and pasted it below, I believe it
will still use my English synthesizer.
I even tried changing the spell check to French which is enough on Microsoft
Word to change the language. So, I don't know how one writes multi-lingual text
on Mac and have VO recognize it.

BonJour
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

 Hi Ramy,
Cool, thanks for that. I know what the Arabic characters are saying now,
at least on my iPhone. My Mac ignores them all together, I wouldn’t have
known that you wrote your name in two alphabets if my iPhone hadn’t have
read it. So I must have my Mac set to ignore other languages as the voice
didn’t change with Tims French either.
The one thing about this list that might potentially embarrass me is the
fact that it is a multi national list with many different countries and
sometimes I don’t know if I’m replying to a male or female, so I avoid
 making any gender references.
I’ve had a few people in New Zealand that think I’m female even though
Petrus is a male name. Although I don’t see any reason why there can’t be
 female Rocks as well.
Oh, and no smart comments on my gender by Simon if he’s reading this.

I’ve had a few people in New Zealand that think I’m female even though Petrus

Oh, and no smart comments on my gender by Simon if he’s reading this.

Hello all,

I have been debating for a long time whether or not to bring this up, and I so
strongly hope that I do not offend anyone by what I’m about to say. Whenever I
see an e-mail from Ramy, VO reads a rather long string of what it calls Arabic
characters, and it takes a bit longer to read through those messages. I am sure
there is very good reason for having these characters there, and by no means
would I want you to eliminate them. However, I was wondering if others on the
list have noticed this behavior, and if there’s a way I can tell VO to ignore
these characters. My VO punctuation preference is set to “some”, so I guess
that means it’s not considering these to be punctuation. Any thoughts on this?

Many thanks, and again I am just very curious and can work around the
characters if needed.

Hi,

It’s not necessarily working for me as described at the moment either. I’ll
check into things in more detail a little later. I’ve got some other
priorities going on right now.

Automatic Language Detection, Was Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
I’m modifying the subject here. This thread has really taken off and I feel a
little sheepish for Ramy seeing his name all the time right was. Anyhow, I’m
still running Mojave, and for me the automatic language detection does not
appear to be working at all. I tried reading Tim’s French words, and VO did not
change its voice at all. Is there perhaps something in systemwide preferences
relating to language that we’re maybe overlooking? I have Victoria as my
default voice.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You shouldn’t really notice any change unless you land on text that is in a
different language. If VO figures out the that it is French, or Spanish etc,
it should change accordingly for pronouncing that, or those, words. It will
remain speaking Alex the rest of the time.

I’ll throw a French word or two in the sentence below to see if it works at all.

Bonjour, je m’appelle Tim. Comment ça va?

A bientot.

Hi,

originally using but add the voice change when it comes upon a different
language.

2020-05-05 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

To enable, press VO-cmd-shift-left or right until you hear “Voice”, keep those
keys pressed, then use the up or down arrow until you hear “Automatically
Select”, then release. To disable, do the same to get to the Voice option then
choose your preferred voice.

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
If you perform the below instructions, using the down-arrow instead of up will
take you past the automatic language suggestion and land on other voices like
Alex or Victoria or Samantha or whoever you want. At least, that’s what
happened to me. Also, it may take a couple of seconds for VO to load the next
voice you come upon when you do this.

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-05 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Ramy and all,

Ramy, now that I understand, it’s really not disturbing to me, especially after
what others have suggested I can do about reading them. For all, several of you
have suggested an automatically select language rotor option somewhere in VO
settings, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere, so I’m stumped!

Thanks for any help,
Pete

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-04 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I just open the message as the Arabic characters are part of the Subject line.
Once you open the message, it should just read the content of the message
instead. For me, the iPhone actually says something in Arabic, but the Mac
just reads out the characters.

Later…

Re: Question About E-mails from Ramy

2020-05-04 Thread Jessica Moss
I have, but unfortunately have no information as to whether or not they can be
ignored, but agree that reading them can be cumbersome with Voiceover on the
Mac. Strangely enough though, I’ve found that when those same messages come
through on my IPHone, those aren’t displaying there, only a secondary voice
that reads his name with it’s proper accent, which makes it easier to bypass
things and be able to read the subject line of the message itself.
