Re: Something very important to consider when switching to the new podcasts app in catalina re: backing up

I mean, it’s Apple. There are other options available, like Downcast for
Podcasting, and Emacs with Emacspeak for reading ePub books. Apple is meant to
be easy to use, good for people who just want to get stuff done, whether it be
on iOS or macOS, thank goodness.

2019-09-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Sounds like the same style as Apple Books. There are ways of determining the
title, but of course this isn't an intuitive process. I'm guessing that the
idea is that they want you to use their app to listen, and using it will be
easy enough, but if you choose to use a third party solution, you'll have to
jump through hoops.

There is something very important to consider if you like to back up your
podcasts that you downloaded.
The short answer is, you can’t
In the old days of iTunes, all of your pod casts would be nicely organised and
downloaded to your media folder which you could view in Finder.
Those days will be gone in catalina.
With the break up of iTunes, Apple has completely changed the way podcasts are
kept.
Instead of having a nice folder called podcasts with all the mp3 or what ever
files you use nicely on display, podcasts are now kept in a very obscure
location in groupe cash in your library on the mac.
It is not meant to be accessible to the general user and even if you were to
find the audio files for backup, they do not contain the name of the podcast
episodes or even what podcast they are from.
This means that listening to them in another player apart from the podcast app
will be near on impossible.
Needless to say that I will be searching for a new podcast app before going up
because i like to be able to backup my podcasts to external storage.
