Hi Ed,

That lets out every blindness product on the market except for the APH
brailleplus 18 and the new humanware 80X magnifier, both of which are running
android 2.3 from about 4 years ago.

I think you have to just accept that they are in the old paradigm and use them
if they are useful, or pass them by if they aren't.

Now that you mention it, I saw one of these and it had enormous battery use
issues. The look, feel and feature set are well worth the extra 3-500 bucks
you would bay vs a focus or a brailliant, but it does seem a bit querky on the
software side. I was hoping it would be fixed by now. I realy really want one.

Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display

2015-03-04 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Erik,

Yeah, it looks really interesting! I have a HIMS BrailleEdge, and I like it a
lot. But there are some features on the Vario that make it look interesting -
the ability to read PDFs and the ability to act as an independent drive when
connected to the computer. I also find the hand positioning on the Braille
Edge kind of awkward, so am curious about the physical layout of the Vario.
Cheers,

You can read PDF on theBrailleEdge I think. I know you can on their
other products. I do love the VarioUltra but it is taking a very long
time to resolve its issues. Battery, no direct support from Apple yet
but there are work arounds, and the issue of freezing and losing your
work in the notetaker are but a few problems that stil are
outstanding. When these are fixed and apple finally supports it
properly I'll be able to highly recommendit. Even with the problems, I
do like it, but just to be aware that all's not well with the
VarioUltra just yet.

2015-03-04 Thread Deb Lewis
Competition for the Focus 14. About that price range and a 14-cell
display with no other features except that it will pair with more than
one BT device like the VarioUltra. I understand the economics of
affording to purchase a display, but honestly I thought my RBD18 was
too few cells and the Beetle will have even less of them.

Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display

2015-03-04 Thread Lisette Wesseling
It's a prototype HIMS braille display which has 14 cells and can apparently
connect to six devices at once (1 USB and 5 bluetooth). It's not for sale yet
and was shown at ATIA in prototype form only.
Blind Bargains did a podcast about it last month, which is the only reason I
know anything about it.

Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display

2015-03-04 Thread Donna Goodin
Hmm, I'm with you. I even find 32 cells to be too small.
Cheers,
Donna

Competition for the Focus 14. About that price range and a 14-cell
display with no other features except that it will pair with more than
one BT device like the VarioUltra. I understand the economics of
affording to purchase a display, but honestly I thought my RBD18 was
too few cells and the Beetle will have even less of them.

 Hi Donna,

I wish the Smart Beetle from Hims had more cells as it has a similar
number of connection possibilities. That said, I'm not sure what that's
 going to be running either.

 Hi Ed,

I agree, I was disappointed to see that. As much as anything, I figured
that since I was going to be at CSUN anyway, I'd take a look. However,
based on our current snowstorm, I may not be going anywhere after all. :(

 Hi all,

I really liked the feel of the Vario Ultra, but on principle I refuse to
buy something released in 2014 that is based on Windows C.

Thanks for this, Doug, it's good to know. One question, it wasn't
clear from Baum's website whether the Vario connects as a display to
the Mac and the iPhone, or just the iPhone. Have you used it as a
 display with your Mac?
 Thanks,
 Donna

Well I love my VarioUltra, but I have to say it has very major
problems which Baum doesn't seem to be resolving very quickly at all.
They've had significant difficulty shipping products at all and now
the current firmware version locks up and requires frequently
resetting the device. I know the product is new and new products have
growing pains, but I wouldn't consider ordering this device until
those of us who have it can report that it's stable. I hope it's very
soon because it has the potential to be a truly fabulous device. I've
been totally shocked by Baum's seemingly cluelessness because it's
 not
consistent with my previous experience. So definitely take a look at
it, but don't plan to invest until they do some serious work and
 until
 they get production in order.
