Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-10 Thread Scott Granados
Oh so two points here.

First, Thomas Edison screwed Nicola Tesla continuously. It’s a really
interesting part of world history really. Edison hired Tesla when he came to
the united states to work on his generators. Tesla did about 50 thousand
dollars worth of work which was huge money in the late 19th century early 20th.
When Tesla completed his work Edison refused to pay him and said “I was only
joking”. Tesla then got funded by JP Morgan and worked with Westinghouse
developing the alternating current. Tesla’s goal though was to have towers
that would beam electricity in to the air and users would have devices that
would pick this current up like a radio wave and use it as they need. Tesla’s
goal was free electricity for everyone but that was 180 degrees out of what
Edison wanted so they battled for years. Edison invented the electric chair
for example to show that electricity was extremely dangerous and Tesla built
his coil that he would stand on top and shoot electricity out of his hands to
demonstrate that it was safe and not dangerous to people if used correctly. I
made the connection though because Tesla was working on the mother of all
wireless chargers and actually went so far as to build several towers some of
which are in my part of the world. He also built the power system up in the
falls which today is still one of the largest power generation facilities. His
AC power and transformers changed the world and are still used today. So that’s
why I made the connection.

Second, the electro magnetic radiation thing is largely a farce and something
that is good for conspiracy radio and selling fake vitamin pills and protectors
but in reality it’s very safe and none of that is true.
There was a study done recently claiming cell phones were dangerous.
What they did though was expose mice to over 1000 times the dosage that a
person would receive in a life time. This means they microwaved the mice.
Sure, if I put a mouse in front of a 5 kilowatt microwave transmitter just far
enough it won’t cook directly it’s definitely going to cause cancer. The few
hundred militants we’re talking about with phone for example though won’t even
penetrate the outer layer of skin and is totally deflected by the water in your
cells.
The University of Miami demonstrated that direct stimulation of the
brain with high frequency radio waves at low intensity if directed properly
could have beneficial properties for alzheimers and dementia patients. The
lower the frequency also the less concerning as you’re not getting close to
resonating water molecules which is how a microwave works.
The big thing though is the inverse square law. This means that every
time you double your distance from a transmission source the effective radiated
power you receive is reduced by the square route. So for example if you were
at 1 meter receiving 9 watts and you moved to 2 meters you now receive 3.
That’s a very gross simplification of the math but you get the idea. So
basically when you’re talking wave lengths this high, even moving millimeters
decreases the exposure by the square route. So this effect makes it very
difficult to be exposed to dangerous levels of EM radio waves with out very
specific focusing, amplification and tuning of the frequency. Hell most of
these technologies like cell phone base stations won’t even give you RF burn if
you directly touch the metal on the antenna.

Anyway, that’s how that works.

Thanks

This talk of there being no charging port is strange to me because the one
I held from in the box had one. The shape was sort of like a lighting
port then a small cable with a very small box on the end with a 1/8th inch
jack and an additional port for the charger. It’s possible it’s a
different adapter because the phone was connected on a test bench to power
and the audio jack was attached for audio testing. We used an Ixia test
 suite for point of reference.

If they have changed the design that seems unlikely. I’ve requested the
part number from my contact so we can look up to make sure it’s the stock

David, that is so cool.

So you could slap a few charging stations in your home and just charge by being
in the house. Same with your office. I could see that being installed in
other places as well like starbucks or in train cars etc. Auto manufacturers
could install that with Apple Car Play so you’re charging while driving to work

Take that Thomas Edison.;)

Ah, this makes more sense and makes me happy.

I was hoping they didn’t go with a proprietary wireless protocol.

I was under the impression that the w1 chip was what made them work not what
connected them to the device itself.

At least I hope that be the way it works.

Simon, I believe the new pods require the W1 chip to function so no on the 6+.
Maybe they also support regular bluetooth I don’t know but from the
presentation it doesn’t appear so.

The Air Pods will work, but may have slight audio delay with older devices.
Probably only the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2 will have no audio delay as
they both will have the new chipset.

Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-08 Thread David Chittenden
Apple has an exclusive with a company which has developed a way of performing
distance wireless charging. The distance is up to 5 metres, about 15 feet. So,
within 5 metres of the charger, the iPhone automatically starts charging.

My suspicion is they found a flaw, so deactivated the charging chip. I hope it
will be activated in the next iPhone and the next iPad. If so, I will purchase
a few wall ports so I can have charging stations in various locations around
home and the office. After all, I now use my iPhone and iPad exclusively for
work. My Mac is mainly for backing up the other devices, updating the other
devices (better update when done through iTunes), and home file server.

They support Bluetooth as well. Apple specifically states the Air Pods will
work with any iOS device running iOS 10. For Mac, it must run Mac Siera. For
Apple Watch, it must run Apple Watch 3.

2016-09-08 Thread Michael Marshall
I love Griffin, they make the fantastic iMike USB thing with the mike jack
witch i use.
You could get a lightning dock, they have a 3.5 Jack on them and ability to
connect to power and listen to music.
Belkin just announced a splitter called the Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar,
which will be available in October, and will allow you to plug your Lightning
charge cable into one side, and a pair of Lightning headphones into the other
Not great solutions I know but solutions nonetheless..

2016-09-08 Thread Mary Otten
 I unders,
Well in this case, I think the people writing about the home button were saying
that the feeling you got when you interacted with it was quite disconcerting,
very noticeable, out of the ordinary, not at all like what happens on the
MacBook trackpad, which apparently really does feel like you're clicking. This
does not feel like the button is moving, and is quite disconcerting, is how I
understood their reaction.

Nah not creepy to me, very cool. Shows me that Nicola Tesla was only a century
ahead of his time.;)

I think of him every time someone mentions wireless charging. The idea of
beaming electricity through space and tapping it where you want it was his
dream although he had a slightly larger scale in mind. Damn Thomas Edison and
his dirty dealings anyway. We might have been pulling free energy out of the
air if it weren’t for him.;)

Thanks. Very helpful. I haven't tried the keyboard caps. Since I have speech
turned on, I haven't really seen the point for me. But it might be interesting

I have heard about the experimental wireless charging where you just have to be

So I only held the phone for a few seconds and didn’t get to put it through
it’s paces although I’m ordering one tonight so we’ll see.:)

The button was still tactile in that there’s a button round area unlike the all
glass feel of android but it’s not a mechanical button. The taptic reminds me
of the way the keyboard taps in IOS 10 if you’ve tried that.

Remember, unlike Android, the fingerprint censor is still in the home button
area so there’s still a physical presence. Imagine a button with no throw.
Android phones tend to put the finger print reader on the back or elsewhere not
in the screen itself.

I checked on line and there’s no Ixia part that matches that so it must have
come from apple. Ixia will sometimes include various patches to make their
hardware work in all sorts of network settings but this wasn’t one of their
parts. Stand by and will update as soon as he gets back to me so we can
locate the right item.

Hell, if they didn’t mass produce one I just might since there seems to be a
lot of interest in it.

It’s just a nice convenience thing, you can just set your phone on your desk
and it’s charging. There’s also larger installations that you can take
advantage of for example Starbucks I believe has a wireless charging option or
at least was looking at that.

I’m not sure if it’s in the wild yet but there’s also work being done on more
distant wireless charging so you just need to be in a room for example with the
charging source. I think that’s still pretty experimental though, the only
systems I have personally seen are the type with a pad.

Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-08 Thread Mary Otten
Scott, since you actually had hands on the phone, what can you say about the
home button. Is it like on android phones that don't have one? That is, you
just have a glass and you find a home button by exploring? Or is there still
some kind of dimple or other tactile indication as to the home button's
whereabouts? How about the feel of the home button? A couple of the mainstream
reviews I read, where they had brief hands-on, did not like the home button.
But change is hard. They were saying it was really quite jarring, not like the
trackpad on say a MacBook.

I hope your contact gets back to you with that part number, since apparently,
the images that are being shown for this adapter on apples on site do not have

You can add it on with 3rd party hardware but what’s the point. It should be

Simon, I believe the new pods require the W1 chip to function so no on the 6+.
Maybe they also support regular bluetooth I don’t know but from the

Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-08 Thread Scott Granados
This talk of there being no charging port is strange to me because the one I
held from in the box had one. The shape was sort of like a lighting port then
a small cable with a very small box on the end with a 1/8th inch jack and an
additional port for the charger. It’s possible it’s a different adapter
because the phone was connected on a test bench to power and the audio jack was
attached for audio testing. We used an Ixia test suite for point of reference.

If they have changed the design that seems unlikely. I’ve requested the part
number from my contact so we can look up to make sure it’s the stock item.

I did not hear about an adapter with charging capabilities for nine dollars. I
know you can get replacement adapters for $9 if you lose them.
I was hoping they would bring in wireless charging

Only 3.5mm. A few weeks back i red about a dummy adapter from a chineeze or
japaneeese website. So, someone actually have thinked about it and maybe it
will be manufactured. The problem i think of, is the lightning port tight
enough to hold the adapter and wire for headphones.

Take care

OK Scott. You put out some pretty harsh language and accusations against
Jonathan on this list earlier today. You said you'd seen the phone and seeing
that it can charge and have the ability to use the older headphones with the
adapter that Apple is including. How will this work with the included adapter?
That is what you were saying, is it not? Thanks for clarifying.

Hi Mary, that's correct. The adapter that ships with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
does not allow you to charge at the same time as you have wired headphones
plugged in.
I've had this verified by sighted people who saw the adapter displayed on the

Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-07 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all. Over on the iPhone list, there are people saying that the pictures of
the adapter that's going to come with the new iPhone 7 do not show the ability
to plug in headphones and charger at the same time. Since this is a big deal,
or has been made an even bigger deal now, I would be curious for those of you
who say that it's possible to explain how. Is there a splitter? I'm just trying
to figure out why the images on apples own website would appear to show just
the one plug for lightning and the one for the headphones, not any kind of
splitter making charging possible. Not trying to start a war. Just trying to
understand how it will work. For my personal use case, it's not a big deal. I
can't remember ever charging my phone and using wired headphones at the same
time.

Re: and you can charge and have audio at the same time over 3.5 adapter

2016-09-07 Thread Daniel Miller
While I agree that this is being blown way out of proportion, according to the
images that are on the Apple website and in the store app, there is not a pass
the report for charging with the new lightning to 3.5mm adapter. That would
probably explain why it's only nine dollars to replace it.

2016-09-07 Thread Scott Granados
They showed charging the phone and pods at the same time and I actually held an
adapter that has a port for your standard lightning adapter and another for the
8th inch jack.

Also, someone was just corrected on CNBC for raising the charging and listening
to music concern and pointed at the adapter, you might look there for more
detail.

has been blown way out of proportion by some, I am curious, Is the fact you can
charge and use this adapter at the same time on their web page somewhere--or
