Re: Editing PDF's with Voiceover

Yes, that’s probably a similar issue. Whoever creates the PDF file has to turn on tagged PDF (which, one hopes, will also solve these problems) in whatever tool is used to create the PDF file. Some tools don’t support it.The real solution is to distribute in a format other than PDF, such as HTML, alongside the PDF file. From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com on behalf of Jessica Moss Date: Friday, August 4, 2023 at 18:17To: 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries Subject: Re: Editing PDF's with VoiceoverOk, so would the same apply to a privacy policy which is supposed to state the following “to fight the funding of terrorists” but the word “fight” looks like “y(umlaut symbol)ght? This probably isn’t a spelling error in the PDF file at all. The most likely
cause is that the “fi” ligature is being used in the typeset text, and the PDF
isn’t properly accessible, so your screen reader isn’t
Receiving the correct characters, even though both “f” and “I” are present in
the text as shown on screen or printed.
You could convert the PDF file to text and then edit, I suppose. Editing the
original PDF wouldn’t help, as it’s most likely correct as is.

What means would you think would be easiest for me to do this?

2023-08-04 Thread Jonathan Cohn
The process of turning an inaccessible PDF document into a document that can be
reviewed by a screen reader is called tagging.
With tagging you can also indicate if an item is a heading or list item or a
paragraph.
Depending on how well the OCR does, tagging to that level might be difficult
for a blind person.
Certainly Adobe Acrobat (which I believe can be obtained for about $5/month)
can do tagging, but there are also non Adobe product that can do this.
Obviously the best solution is to start with a word or in-design document and
then convert it to a PDF. When one does things this way, most of the editors
styles will get directly converted into the appropriate tag in the PDF
Also, I believe that Pnema solutions has a cloud based service that uses AI to
better convert scanned text into a usable pdf using AI for spelling corrections
and detecting font changes that might indicate headers.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Editing PDF's with Voiceover

2023-08-03 Thread Jessica Moss
Over the last few months, I’ve been getting PDF’s via e-mail which have mostly
been news letters from the clients the company I work with audits/remediates
for accessibility, and I check over them to make sure everything is readable.
However, some of these I’ve been noticing have been scanned, but not
proofread, because they are so riddled with spelling errors, which while this
is technically not considered an accessibility violation, some of them are so
bad they make the document borderline unreadable if you’re reading it with a
screen reader. However, I’m only using Adobe Acrobat Reader, and am wondering
how doable the process to go through via Voiceover and edit these would be
before I consider purchasing a license to do this. Has anyone done this who
could give me some pointers?

Since I don't have voice Dream Reader for Mac at this point, what I do is
download the file and then airdrop it to my phone. I then use Voice Dream on
my phone, and it works out very nicely.

There's a great online service I use called OnlineOCR
(https://www.onlineocr.net). I don't do OCR enough to pay for software to do
it, and this you can pay for a number of pages and just upload your document
and download the result.

Lorie,
perhaps sending the file to the robobraille free convert service will
translate the file into a format you prefer.

their site is
www.robobraille.org
Where a list of file formats is provided.
The email is
conv...@robobraille.org
Where you place the desired format in the subject line.

There's a great online service I use called OnlineOCR

it, and this you can pay for a number of pages and just upload your document

mine does that too, saying "image" before it reads the text but that also
happens in Safari when I'm reading a pdf so I think it must be pictures that

Re: Preview and PDF's

2017-10-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Anne,

Yes, labelling of fields is often a problem, no matter which PDF app you're
using. I use PDFPen Pro a fair amount, but I run into the same issues when the
forms do not have their labels properly labelled. I guess it is similar to the
frustrations we have with unlabelled elements in apps. Until developers and
form creators take our needs into consideration, we're going to come up against
barriers too often. Quite often the form creators use automated form creation
like is found in Acrobat Pro and other high end PDF apps, then just leave it at
that. They don't appear to take the extra effort required to make them truly
accessible.

Oh well, I'll get off my soapbox now. Have a good one.

Re: Preview and PDF's

2017-10-29 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Tim,

We put High Sierra on our MacBook that we use for teaching, and I’ve looked at
a PDF tax form. The editable fields are accessible, but it seems to be
impossible to tell where each field is located and not all the fields are
labelled. Not yet really usable.

Cheers,

Anne

Preview and PDF's

2017-10-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In the promotional info about High Sierra, it was mentioned about improvements
to the Preview app, especially with respect to VO. One specific item I've just
notice is that Preview and VO now work together in fillable PDF forms. The
editable fields are now accessible and announced by VO when navigating the
form. You can either use VO navigation or tab between the fields. You must
first be in a field before the tab navigation works, but that's normal
behaviour. If the developer of the form is lazy and does not properly label
the edit fields, it could cause us frustration knowing what field relates to
what label, but that's also expected.

Try it out some time, if you dare :).

Re: Reading pdf's on the iPad

2014-01-24 Thread Alex Hall
That depends on the app you use. The iBooks app can handle PDFs, as can the $10
Voice Dream Reader, mail can also open them if they are attached to a message.
Sometimes PDFs are made in such a way that they are hard to read, but give
iBooks a shot and see if that helps.

Unfortunately, VoiceOver cannot go to the editable fields. I simply can't find

I tried turning cursor tracking off but keyboard focus kept jumping into the

Ok, cool, finally managed to get it set up. I'm not sure what happened the
first 3 times I tried using it, but it wasn't even taking me to the log-in

First, make sure you have the latest version for mac (ver 1.6.10). download
it from dropbox.com and follow the link for getting started. once
downloaded, mount the .dmg file by pressing command-o on it. then you can
just command-o on the dropbox.app file.

You'll be asked to log into your dropbox account, and from there its just
following the prompts. I usually skip the tutorial, but you might want to
 take it.

Honestly, there's nothing to it! You don't have to do anything with Terminal
or any other gymnastics to get it installed.

Once installed, it places a dropbox folder in your home directory, and a
menu item in the Extras menu (VO + m twice).

How in the world do you get dropbox to run on the mac? I installed and
launched it, and always end up getting some message telling me dropbox has
 no windows.
I found something somewhere that has this long list of instructions on how to
make it accessible with voiceover, that I can't even remember, but remember
it had something to do with going into the terminal, which I'm not familiar

Re: Dropbox, Was program to read pdf's well on the mac?

Dropbox has undergone a major accessibility improvement in the last six months,
so that may explain why you had a much better time with it recently.

Re: program to read pdf's well on the mac?

2013-01-08 Thread Steve Holmes
I installed Dropbox quite some time ago so don't remember specifics. I think it
started out something funky but somewhere in the initial run, you need to be
able to set up your account and login stuff. Once that is done, just go into
Menu Extras and VO over to the Dropbox menu and press VO-Space to open that
menu up. Also, it should create a folder called Dropbox in your $HOME
directory.

Re: program to read pdf's well on the mac?

2013-01-07 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi, to read a pdf on a Mac you could also use Quicklook. Then you can at least
hear the contents. Just press Space on a pdf file and let VO read.
Unfortunately it's not possible to navigate propperly but it's better then
nothing.

Yet even another way is to use Dropbox. With that setup, you can just
copy the PDF or Epub formatted file, for that matter to the desired
folder within the Dropbox folder on the computer and then fire up the
Dropbox app on your iPhone and access the file. It will give you the
choice to put it into iBook or possibly other apps you may have on
your device that are compatible with these files.

Re: program to read pdf's well on the mac?

2013-01-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there.
I just tested PDFpen Pro with the iPhone User Guide. You can use it to read
straight through a PDF file like I just did. It is supposed to be a great
editing program, if you're sighted, of course.

We have discussed this issue before on this list. I have kept PDFpen Pro on my
computer with the hope that sooner or later they will decide they are tired of
hearing from VoiceOver users that can't work their program. I really need one
myself, although not bad enough to put Windows on here.

We may have to wait for Apple to figure it out for them. After all, it work in
Windows, albeit sometimes slowly with large files. I invite you to come and
join some of the rest of us in trying to get a good editor/reader for VoiceOver
users.

Yesterday, I was wishing good ol Adobe had made their app for the Mac work with
VoiceOver. My bank sends you to Adobe Reader if you want to view your
previously filed tax forms. If you do it using VoiceOver, the screen might as
well be blank. I had to get a reader because this web site is bearly accessible
anyway, and I got tired of dealing with it.

Regards,
Gigi, who had a very bad blind accessibility day yesterday

Absolutely the iPhone is definitely the best PDF reader around far as I'm

I use preview.
some pdf's are very accessible. other may just be jpeg's saved in pdf format.
with those you will need an OCR program to break the text out into usable form.
