OT: Windows screen readers (was A few issues with Boot Camp, and a heads-up for users of JAWS)

2014-09-01 Thread Alex Hall
I have to say, I used Windows every day for over a year, then slowly less and
less as I started the transition to the Mac, with only NVDA. I never ran into a
single problem, and in fact had a much smoother experience overall. NVDA has
only gotten better since those days, too. And yes, before that I used Jaws for
years, so I'm not trying to compare NVDA to something I never used (that's what
I meant by smoother - NVDA ran better and with fewer bugs and oddities than
Jaws ever has). The Mac is still the most seamless experience of all, but NVDA
worked just fine and I never once needed Jaws or WE.

Mmm, that's great in theory, but Windows isn't built for access through APIs
in the same way that OS X and Linux are yet, so you inevitably need one of
the commercial screen readers, for some purpose. So you end up installing
the one screen reader that does everything, either JAWS or Window-Eyes (I'm
 fortunate enough to own both).

I hope that Microsoft advances the state of play here, because I really do
want to see a Windows world devoid of the requirement for external screen
reading software. But yeah, you know, that's kind of not going to happen
while Microsoft is studiously avoiding getting hit by sueballs, to our
 exclusion.

It seems to work with VM Fusion. Mike demonstrates this on his podcast. (mac
demo 5).

 www.nvda-project.org and www.satogo.com . www.serotek.com . System access
works very good with office2007 and other software. NVDA is yet another good

Mod note - Windows, Windows screen readers and VMs

2010-03-30 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All, a lister wrote me privately in regard to my earlier post concerning
what's on and off topic for this list in regard to Windows and Windows screen
readers. The lister was wondering if the question 'Why does my Jaws licens
disappear when I change the ram settings?' or related such questions concerning
how screen readers relate to VM usage are on topic for this list.

Absolutely, yes they are on topic.

Just remember to keep things Mac / Apple-related, and we're all good!…

  Have a great day / evening!…

Smiles,

Cara :)
