Re: [maemo-developers] Re: high speed (52/48Mhz) MMC mode added
Hi, I booted the kernel from http://fanoush.webpark.cz/maemo/zImage-su-18-200639-2gb-mmcplus52mhz.zip As expected, my MMC is being read 4x faster with this kernel, but unfortunately the device fails to connect to my WEP 128bit encrypted Netgear MR814v2 WLAN if I use this kernel. Thus I reverted to the default kernel, which has no such problem. I repeated the test three times, the result was always reproduced. regards, Armin. -- --- May the Source be with you! [maemo-developers] merged some Maemo-Mapper patches
Hi Cezary, I merged your 'GPS-Info patch' for Maemo-Mapper 1.1 http://eko.one.pl/files/n770/maemo-mapper/gpsinfo/gpsinfo-20061002.diff with my set of patches. My patches modify the 1.1 version of John Costigan's Maemo Mapper to provide a second set of URI/Cache, e.g. to alternate between street maps and satellite images. The ESC-hardware-key now toggles the URI/Cache settings. (In the original version it toggles show/hide tracks.) The modified version also introduces the possibility to operate with closed cover. (This is very useful for outdoor activities, such as hiking, walking, climbing, kanuing, cycling,..) If you want to disable the default behaviour, which disconnects the bluetooth GPS connection when the cover is closed, you have to unset the global configuration parameter 'Tools' -> 'Control Panel' -> Connectivity' -> 'Disconnect when cover on device' (this is Gconf-Key /system/osso/connectivity/IAP/disconnect_on_cover). Here are the patches to be applied against John Costigan's original source file maemo-mapper.c: http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-0.patch http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-1.patch http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-2.patch http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-3.patch http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-4.patch http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-5.patch The complete modified source with all patches applied: http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-5.c And an ARMEL-executable for testing: http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-5 No deb package yet. To try this version, you must have ITOS2006 with Maemo-Mapper 1.1 installed and then have to perform these step on the device via osso-xterm or ssh: $ gainroot # cd /usr/bin # mv maemo-mapper maemo-mapper.orig # wget http://armin-warda.de/maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-5 # mv maemo-mapper-1.1-cj-aw-5 maemo-mapper # chmod +x maemo-mapper Not yet tested much. regards, Armin. You understand, this Maemo and Wiki is about collaboration... > I would greatly appreciate this as > the complicated deb packaging is holding > me back from making them. I really think your > method is much easier than the dpkg-buildpackage > approach. OK, here we go: After you compiled your application you have all resulting files prepared. Executables, libraries, config files, and everything else is prepared, and just has to be packaged into a deb for installation on the Nokia 770. You might have to adapt the config files of your application because on the Nokia 770 finally everything will be installed relative to /var/lib/install/, for example /etc/myconfig becomes /var/lib/install/etc/myconfig. If your application has compiled-in locations, you might even have to change Makefiles, or source files before you compile! mkdir ./stage cd ./stage mkdir bin etc lib libexec sbin usr var # only those which you need Create necessary subdirectories below ./stage/usr/ Move the files into the appropriate directories. Do a 'strip' on the executables and libraries to remove debugging information and reduce size. It does not really make sense to include source code, READMEs, manual pages, etc. into the package for the Nokia 770, so just ignore these. du -ks . # note down the size to put it into the control file cat > control < Description: this application does bla bla bla EOF Edit the file. Put in the correct size you just determined. echo 2.0 > debian-binary tar -cvzf control.tar.gz control tar -cvzf data.tar.gz ./usr ar -rv my-package-name_0.1_arm.deb \ debian-binary control.tar.gz data.tar.gz Good Luck! Re: [maemo-developers] X Window export DISPLAY
Hi, with the OpenSSH client on your Nokia770 and using X11-Forwarding (-X) you can display X11-applications running on other (Unix-) systems on your Nokia 770. Here is a snapshot: http://armin-warda.de/nokia770-displaying-yast.png Yast is running on 'jojo', a SuSE Linux system, and is displayed on the Nokia770. Is this what you were asking for? Not everything runs smooth, it looks like the maemo's X-server lacks some features/extensions of other X-server. And there is the restriction, that the window manager of the Nokia 770 does not display an icon for an X11-forwarded window, thus you should not minimize it, because you would not be able to maximize it again. The Dropbear SSH client does not support X11-forwarding. Armin. Re: [maemo-developers] Adding swapon/off to Jakub's Load-Plugin applet
Hi, some minor enhancements to my version of Jakub's Load-Plugin applet: http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-plugin-aw_0.2.7-1_arm.deb http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-plugin-aw_0.2.7-1.tar.gz http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/patch4 Changes in the new version: - no swapon/off menu-entry if no swap configured (swapname is empty) - OK/Cancel confirmation-box after swapon/off menu-entry is selected Remember, you have to add the following line to /etc/sudoers manually: user ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/swapon *, /sbin/swapoff * Do you think the Load-Plugin applet with swapon/off is now end-user-ready and should be linked to from the Maemo ApplicationCatalog Wiki? regards, Armin. -- --- May the Source be with you! Re: [maemo-developers] Adding swapon/off to Jakub's Load-Plugin applet - deb-package
Hi, it took some more files to modify besides the changelog, but I think I finally succeeded to fork Jakub's release: http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-plugin-aw_0.2.6-1_arm.deb http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-plugin-aw_0.2.6-1.tar.gz I posted the patches earlier on this list, still hope that Jakub will pick & clean them up and continue to maintain the package. Please remember, this modified Load-Plugin applet has only been tested by me and could ruin your device. Be careful. I will not add the modified Load-Plugin applet to the Maemo ApplicationCatalog Wiki until at least some positive test reports have been posted here. Armin. Re: [maemo-developers] Adding swapon/off to Jakub's Load-Plugin applet - Patches
Hi, attached you find three patches for Jakub's Load-Plugin applet. I applied these changes to the source code downloaded from: http://koti.welho.com/jpavelek/tmp/770/load-plugin_0.2.5-1.tar.gz My code-changes are split into three incremental steps to make it easier to understand (and improve ;-) them: - patch1 adds a 'swapfile' configuration string to the settings menu. - patch2 makes all configuration settings persistent via gconf. - patch3 adds the swapon/off menu-entry and logic. The Load-Plugin runs as 'user', swapon and swapoff need 'root', thus you have to add the following line to /etc/sudoers manually: user ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/swapon *, /sbin/swapoff * Hopefully my changes are picked up, cleaned up, tested, and make it into the next main release. (Btw., I dropped auto-discovery of active swaps, because I think there is no need to auto-activate a swap on reboot via /etc/rc2.d/ anymore, when swapon/off is just one click away...) Armin. But this will only make sense for a swap living on the RS-MMC. If you are running with a swap file on the internal flash, you would not want to swapoff when the RS-MMC lid is opened... Do you think, detection of the prefix /dev/mmcblk0 for a swap device - or /media/mmc1/ for a swap file - in /proc/swaps, is good enough to conclude, that the swap lives on the RS-MMC? Is absense of these prefixes good enough to conclude, that the swap down _not_ live on the RS-MMC? > Also, please scan not just for swap files, but also for swap > partitions - Yes, via /proc/swaps I autodetect an active swap-file or -device, if none has been configured in the Load-Plugin applet settings. > I prefer to have a swap partition Me too, I use /dev/mmcblk0p2 - I repartitioned the RS-MMC with two partitions: mmcblk0p1 with 480MB FAT and mmcblk0p2 with 30 MB swap. USB-plugging the N770 to the PC only umounts the 1st partition, the swap on the seconds remains available. Armin. -- --- May the Source be with you! [maemo-developers] Adding swapon/off to Jakub's Load-Plugin applet
Hi, I am currently adding a swapon/off menu-item to Jakub's Load-Plugin, http://koti.welho.com/jpavelek/tmp/770/ which he recently released under the LGPL. The new swapon/off feature might look like this: http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-applet-1.png http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-applet-2.png http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-applet-3.png This feature will be useful for those who have a swap on the RS-MMC. (You really should swapoff before you unplug the RS-MMS...) What I achieved yet by modifying Jakub's released source: - add the 'swapon/off' menu entry (does nothing yet) - this menu entry automatically changes from swapoff to swapon and vice versa, depending on the current state - shows the current swap usage in MB - add a 'Swapfile' config string to the settings menu - make all settings persistent over reboots via gconf - discover an active swapfile on start (=boot), if none set via gconf Any suggestions? There is still (at least) one open issue: the Load-Plugin applet runs as 'user', swapon/off needs 'root'. I don' want to have every user add two lines to /etc/sudoers, I need a more elegant way to solve this. Andrew Flegg recommends to > Open a pty and drive a root-enabled shell through `sudo gainroot'? Unfortunately, I do not know how to do that. I am not an experienced hacker or C coder, but I try to contribute. Can anybody provide some C code sniplet that demonstrates how I can open a pty and drive a root-enabled shell through sudo gainroot? > Then users will only have to ensure R&D mode is enabled without any > further hacking. Yes, that would be much better than hacking /etc/sudoers. Everybody who wants to use swap has to enable R&D mode anyway... I will create a patch of my changes and will ask Jakub to include it. I hope he will continue to maintain the load-plugin, otherwise I (or someone else) would have to fork it. But I am no experienced coder, thus I would prefer to not have to maintain it myself. (Hmm, I feel shame for my code quality, so actually I'd also like to have somebody clean it up...) Armin. -- --- May the Source be with you! Hi, Jakub has released the sources (LGPL): http://koti.welho.com/jpavelek/tmp/770/load-plugin_0.2.5-1.tar.gz (Unfortunately he lost the sources of all recent versions, the now open-sourced version lacks the process-listing and -killer feature of binary-only version 0.2.4) I am currently trying to add a swapon/off menu entry to the source. Some difficulties I face: 1.) want to add a persistent application setting for the swap device 2.) the applet runs as user, swapon/off needs root For 1.) I am simply struggling with gconf, wrt. 2.)
