Canola is free!
[This text has been posted to http://etrunko.blogspot.com/2009/03/canola-is-free.html] I'm pleased to announce that I've just closed bug #3881, which means that from now on Canola and all its components are licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3. The source code of the former closed-source packages, Atabake, Download Manager, Terra and Canola, has been uploaded to our gitorious server a few hours ago. The canola-devel mailing list for developers is already set up and working on garage. Everyone is very welcome to join us in the development of the project. For documentation, such as installation instructions, build dependency, and so on, I'm setting up a wiki that should go online by the end of this week under the openbossa.org domain. With all this, Canola officially leaves the beta status. The packages of for the final 2.0.0 version will be uploaded soon, together with brand new Maemo-EFL. Last, I'd like to thank everyone for supporting the project even before the very first release and especially for providing feedback on the various releases we had since December 2007. If today we were able to release Canola as Free Software, consider yourself responsible for it as well. I can see how this would be a good idea, but can we add a group list in addition to have an individual packager's email? For example, I work with the debian-perl team and we co-maintain about 1,000 packages. So when a bug comes in we track it and we all can act on it since we all get notified. But in the changelog we have both the name of the person who changed things in the package and in the control file we have the group email address, like this; --- changelog --- libtest-file-perl (1.25-1) unstable; urgency=low * Initial Release. Foster jerem...@jeremiahfoster.com This shows that bug reports will go to the _maintainer_ of the package, i.e. Debian Perl Group but the person that physically made changes to the package is listed in the changelog. This is good because if there is a bug we can find out why it was introduced, or who fixed it, or when it was added and by whom. This increases accountability and transparency, both good things I feel. So, if we want to be closer to debian and to increase transparency, I think we should make sure the person who last touched the package put their name in the changelog. We can always add the group email address to the control log. How does this sound? Yeah, except for the Uploaders field in debian/control, we've been doing exactly what you said. The debian/changelog file includes the name of the person who changed the package while in control we have the mailing list. Re: New features in autobuilder and Extras Assistant
On Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 4:26 PM, Niels Breet [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This week we've added some new features to the autobuilder and Extras Assistant. I hope developers will like these changes: Rejecting packages when the exact version is uploaded for the second time. The autobuilder has been modified to reject a package when the same version is already available in the extras-devel repository. This change will force developers to increase their package version number after each successful upload and build. In the past we've had problems in the repository where a package was uploaded twice and caused 'Size Mismatch' errors[1]. Yay! This is specially interesting for newcomers not used to debian packaging. Making this error explicit helps both developers/packagers (who won't be able to break the repository with this kind of mistake) and users (who will be happy being able to install their favourite packages). Package signing no longer required. The autobuilder and Extras Assistant no longer require packages to be GPG signed. It seemed to cause a lot of grief for developers without any real benefits. This change is targetted to making uploading packages easier. Every uploader has to be authenticated to upload a package, so we can already trace back the uploader. The autobuilder signs packages which are moved into the repository. Ok, so you don't need to sign the packages anymore, but it won't hurt if you upload a signed package, isn't it? My question here is concerning dput uploads. Is it still possible to upload packages using dput?? If this is the case, is GPG signing still required? Upload to multiple repositories at the same time. You can now use the Extras Assistant[2] to upload a source package to chinook and diablo at the same time. No need to do two separate uploads anymore. This feature has been requested for quite some time, let's hope it helps. Another big improvement here. They fixed this issue in the final version of the SDK, where libglade in the official repository. With this, we now have two versions of the package in the system. If I understood correctly libglade won't be anymore supported officially by Maemo. Unfortunately lots of applications still depend on it, for the most various reasons. And until GtkBuilder can't fully replace glade, it would be nice to have the python bindings working, even if they were part of an not official python package. I uploaded libglade 2.6.2 to chinook extras, which would happen sooner or later anyway. So it would be great if anyone could provide the package for the glade bindings. Currently it is part of the pygtk2 package in Debian/Ubuntu and I really don't know how much effort would be needed to provide it as an completely separate package. I would be great if someone could help us here. Re: Python startup desktop icon
Hi, You need to call osso.Context() somewhere in your code, preferably in the beginning of main function. You'll also need to call osso.close() in the end of your code.
