You can't distribute them prepackaged. That's why some distributions have
dummy scripts which download and install the MS fonts from their site.

If you want more fonts, you may try installing the ttf-dejavu
package.
It does not contain "arial" or "times", but contains a serif, a
sans-serif and a sans-serif mono font (the whole font family is
called
DejaVu).

For Microsoft fonts, it should be possible to prepare a package from
the so-called "Microsoft Web Fonts" which are kind of semi-free, but
one must look first into their license very carefully, if it's
allowed
to re-distribute the repackaged fonts.

You can at least fall back to generic fonts like:

My useragent.vendor string is "Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.3.7

I did just upgrade to OS2008 using the

A web application working on _and_ off line ?

2008-04-10 Thread Marco Solari
I'm facing a problem which I suppose to be quite common in the internet
tablets world, but I don't know if and how it has been addressed and
solved... It's not specific to Maemo, but I'm sure many people here did
already face a similar issue...: -)

I have to design a presentation system, which, at time T1, being on-line,
loads some data (for example some patient's case history) from a server's
database on the internet; then, at time T2, being possibly off-line,
presents the data to the user (for example a nurse at the patient's place),
who could update this data, and finally, at time T3, again on-line, the
system should pour out the data back to the server's database.

I suppose I should use something like httpd and sqlite on the nokia device,
and some sort of (xml-synchronization...

Please ignore this post if You think it's too off topic on this list... :-(

One question about speech2text poor performance

2008-01-15 Thread Marco Solari
Hi!
I have a question about the voice recognition problem on the Nokia platform,
hoping it's not too off-topic...
I see on this platform some voice recognition tool is available, but it's
extremely resource demanding, slow and performs with quite a low success
percentage... I'm asking myself how comes today quite every low-end phone is
capable to recognize uttered names by a not-trained user, with 90% success
rate (I would estimate); I believe Nokia platform sports quite higher
hardware (CPU/RAM) than thos pohones...
The question is: is the task of recognizing a small set of utterances
basically different from the task of recognizing spoken words out of a
bigger dictionary (I limit the problem to single words, not considering the
spoken speech...), or the commercial phones name-recognition software is
really more advanced than open source tools we use ?
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Hi,

currently SVG support is disabled but you can build your own version of
microb-engine which supports SVG.

Make sure you have lot's of free space. If I remember correctly, building
microb-engine needs something like 1.7GB. I'm not joking.

First you need to build libidl-dev:
svn co https://garage.maemo.org/svn/browser/mozilla/trunk/libidl libidl
cd libidl
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us -tc | tee libidl-build.log
cd ..
fakeroot dpkg -i libidl-dev*.deb

If you get problems with building libidl, because you lack flex then read
this bug report:
http://bugzilla.scratchbox.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=310

To build microb-engine you need to have extras repository available in your
sdk and you need to install libcairo2-dev package. Then you need also bc
package which wasn't available in the maemo repositories last time checked,
though I haven't checked latest sdk releases.

fakeroot apt-get install libcairo2-dev
fakeroot dpkg -i bc-package-name.deb # you should be able to take latest
from stable or unstable debian, though most probably you need to rebuild it
svn co https://garage.maemo.org/svn/browser/mozilla/trunk/microb-engine
microb-engine
cd microb-engine/microb-engine
ADD_OPTIONS="--enable-oji" DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="parallel svgport syscairo"
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us -tc | tee ../microb-engine-build.log

Then copy your microb-engine package to mmc and install it to the device,
before installing it to the device you need to install libcairo2 from
maemo-extras repository.

I have been testing this with maemo 3.x releases so it might be that 4.0
have some issues fixed. I have tried this with N800 not N810.

I think it would be nice if someone could upload optional SVG enabled
version of the browser to maemo-extras or somewhere. Maybe browser team
could do that?

Btw, if you have started browser with old (non-SVG enabled) backend, you
need to remove compreg.dat file:
http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/maemo-developers/2007-September/011848.html

Sincerely,

Hi, I'm working on speech recognition for the N800. Plans and status can be
found at http://lima.lti.cs.cmu.edu/mediawiki/PocketSphinx and
http://lima.lti.cs.cmu.edu/mediawiki/GStreamerSphinx

To summarize:

 * ALSA doesn't work very well so we need to use GStreamer for audio input
 * This is not actually very hard. I'm working on a GStreamer plugin for
PocketSphinx. Currently it is in "proof of concept" stage, i.e. it
recognizes speech but isn't configurable or stable, you can get it at
https://cmusphinx.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/cmusphinx/trunk/gst-pocketsphi
nx/
 * The N800 is a bit slower than I expected (slower than my first-generation
iPaq) so we will have to do some more tuning to get acceptable performance
for large-vocabulary tasks like dictation. For simple commands it should be
just fine though.
 * I haven't put up acoustic models yet but will do so pretty soon. The
ones included with PocketSphinx will not work because they expect 16kHz
sampling rate, and the N800 can only do 8kHz. On the bright side the audio
quality from the lapel microphone on the headset that comes with the device
is pretty good (the onboard mic is not suitable for speech recognition).

Stuff I would appreciate some help with includes:

 * GStreamer.
 * How to create a new input method.

gpsd is included in N800. Please see

ide_bora.html
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howtousegpsframeworkinos2007/

Please note, however, that there is an open bug

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1621

that can be overcome with

   setenv("GPSD_PROG","/usr/sbin/gpsd",1);

before calling gpsbt_start(). This bug prevents for example the gps-saver
application from connecting to gpsd.

I am currently evaluating the porting to the ARM architecture of open-source

I would also like to have some feedback about the feasibility and usability

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.
