I have seen the G43 at CeBIT and took a photo of it right next to my
N800. Here you can get the direct size comparison (scroll down a little
for the photo):

Thanks to visiting the Digital Cube booth with a journalist, I was able
to speak with one of their reps and could ask a few more in-depth
questions. Unfortunately, he didn't know too much about his company's
Linux plans for the device.

What the tech press incl. Engadget fail to mention is that the G43 as
shown in pictures these days is a prototype design. It is NOT final.
They are still working on the case and it might look very different when
it is released.

I had the chance to play with it. It's fascinating and if x86 PCs
continue to shrink like this, ARM-based devices such as the N800 will
have a tough time ahead.

Re: N800 hardware revision?

2007-04-11 Thread Acadia Secure Networks

Hanno,

I was surprised when Intel sold off its RISC/X-scale high end chipset
business to Marvel(?) some months ago until I realized that Intel's
product strategy was to replace that product line with an X86 based
rough equivalent. It helps that AMD drove Intel to work very hard on the
problem of processor power consumption and now it appears that Intel's
strategy with respect to X-scale replacement may pay off. Of course
this does not by any means sound the death knell for ARM instruction set
processors, it just takes away a part of the ARM processor addressable
market (i.e. the higher end of the market served by this class of
device), assuming that Intel is successful with its strategy.

Best Regards,

John Holmblad

I can't speak for Nokia, but: No. There will probably be an N990 or
something similar in a year or two, but I'm sure the N800 is what it is.

Oh, wow! That thing /is/ huge! It's bad enough the N800 is so long, but
there's no way I'd ever get that thing into a pocket. $800 for a brick with
a screen? No thanks. And the picture clearly show it running WinXP, which
means it will be difficult to get any use out of it even if I did happen to
have it with me...

N800 hardware revision?

2007-04-05 Thread mitcheloc

I purchased the N800 earlier this year and ended up returning it
shortly afterwards for many reasons. The biggest of those being what I
considered to be sluggish performance and poor camera quality. With
some changes I'd be interested in purchasing it again

Are there any plans for revision of the N800 hardware platform?

If not I think I'll wait for the G43 from Digital-Cube (
http://www.gottabemobile.com/DigitalCubesG43SmallestUMPC.aspx).

Thanks

p.s. It would be nice if a future revision would have a display thats
readable in the sun(and maybe two buttons on the right so they
could be used for games).

The camera is pretty poor but it typical for what you get in a gadget
where the camera is not the primary feature. I don't find it all that
sluggish though.

It seems that Nokia has had a decent amount of success with these
Internet Tablets. I can see them evolving the hardware at the same
pace. They have already mentioned plans for a WiMax version when that
becomes more wide-spread.
