With all the respect, the terms of the program estated clearly that you
had to be based in one of the supported countries. If you weren't you
still could apply and have chances of getting a discount code, at your
 own risk.

That's fine with me. I'm sorry, I should have read that. It's still
annoying to be treated as second-class citizen by the people you
wanted to help when the philosophy of open source is all the contrary,
but there's nothing I can do about it.

Only the Nokia shop can deal with your problems. Please insist with them.

That's what I'm doing, with no result though... After the billionth
time they heard from me, they said they'd forward my case to the
department responsible for payments on the online store, and I haven't
heard from them since then.

 The best thing to
do would be to find a way to ship directly to Greece, from any Nokia
 store.

Nokia shops can't ship out of their countries due to commercial reasons.
There is also a lot of fraud attempts on online purchases and this is
why they tend to have strict policies on payments with credit cards.

That's fine with me too. I wouldn't be complaining if one of the
following conditions was met:

1) I had successfully managed to send the N810 to someone in Spain
2) since they cannot send to a different address than the card's
billing address, they had been consistent to their policy and not
dispatched the first order
3) they had dispatched the first order with the complete shipping
address instead of truncating it after my verification
4) they had dispatched the second order like the first one
5) they had released the money on the credit card and given me a new
discount code

Do you understand my frustration now? Honestly, the way things have
turned out now, all I want is to have the money on my credit card
released and have a second discount code sent to me, just like they
did with my previous order. I'd then be happy to have someone send it
to me.

We understand all this is uncomfortable for you, but please also
understand that you decided to go through the unsupported path.

The situation as you describe it isn't uncomfortable for me. I knew it
since the beginning. The way things have turned out now has me
completely annoyed... I am not trying to blame anyone but the people
in the Nokia store who are not doing their job correctly.

Thanx a lot for the support,

Vivia

 Anyway, here is the story:

All this is very unfortunate and it is too late now but you could have
done some things better to minimize those issues. I'm not sure about
N810 program but with N800 there was a FAQ page
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/n800developerdeviceprogram/ (see Nokia
shops don't cover my country, do I still have a chance?) and
implications were discussed in this list many times. Maybe with future
developer device programs (if any) this should be stressed again to
prevent or minimize such frustration. Here are the facts:

- devices are sold only in some countries
- you need to use online store of those countries
- you need to use credit card with shipping and billing address from
that country

So the best way is to have friend from that country who will buy the
device for you, use his/her own credit card, gets the device, then
preferably also tests the device (and handles possible replacement) and
then ships it to you. Unfortunately you can't ship device directly to
you and you can't use your own credit card. And most probably you can't
easily claim warranty in your country if device arrives broken or gets
broken later. This is the reality you either accept or not. The other
choice Maemo team had (and I think they really considered it) was to
limit the program only for developers from those selected countries to
prevent similar unhappy stories. Fortunately they decided against such
'unfair' setup and some developers (including me) are very happy with
this :-)

The first (770) device program was done differently and maemo team
shipped device directly which was of course better for developer outside
of those countries but I can perfectly understand this was not easy and
most possibly such experiment was possible only in the beginning of such
project.

Yes, I did read it, but all they say is that the way we use the code
is up to us... Not too helpful indeed :(

Thanx a lot for warning me about also having him test the device! I
wouldn't have thought about it myself :)

I'm afraid none of the people here (including the ones who work at
Nokia) have influence over how the discount codes are managed.
Aren't big corporations wonderful?

 Anyway, here is the story:

snip

In my experience you'll need someone living in one of the approved
countries to buy the N810 with their own credit card. Yes, this is
incredibly frustrating for those of us who are second-class citizens in
Nokia's eyes.

I hope you'll manage to get a working discount code, if the one you
originally got doesn't work any more.
