What does the dot in the character mean?

It indicates the starting point of the stroke, so the underscore is
drawn from right to left. If you press on a shape in the handwriting
teacher, it will show you the strokes one by one.

Or do I have to do something (e.g. pressing another button)before I can get
 an
 underbar?

Press the Abc1 button on the left side of the handwriting area so it
turns into ;?*, then the underscore character will be recognized. If a
particular character is giving you trouble, just add your own shape for
it using the teacher.

Make that drawn from left to right. Sorry for the confusion.

Tomas,

many thanks for the detailed answer, that should help. Also I think after some
training of myself and changing a few characters, the hand writting
recognition is quite usable.

There might be issues with performance, but if these improve with a SW update,
I am quite happy with it.

Would performance improve, if I reduce the number of shapes per character?
I.e. doing a kind of very unique symbol per character, like (at least the
early) Palms did?

Many thanks,
Rainer

i tried to port libcrypy-ssleay-perl[*] to nokia770 but i got some bizarre
issues, take a look at the mailing list archive. with this lib you can use
nocatlogin and use the non-encrypted+nocat option wifi.

I don't think this is what we're using here (or maybe I just don't
understand :)).

 Please define 'something else' ;)

For instance : cascading windows.

Or, having a big one in full screen mode and one other smaller in front.

This is technically possible todo, however on handheld device it is
propably not a typical usecase. The physical size of the screen is not
very big, that would mean really small fonts or scrollbars everywhere.
Maybe these kind of things could be implemented as plugins for either TN
or statusbar, so that you can for example see when you have new mail

I thought about that too but it is not what I want :)

etc. I don't think many people read mails while watching a movie (?)

If not mails at least reading an ebook, or some paper work ?
Or, am i alone in this case ?

A similar use case I'd be interested in is to simply _see_ another window
while working in one, at the same time. On my desktop, I often keep a window
with results in it off to the side, perhaps even mostly off the screen. This
would be useful on the 770, especially because there are cases in which one
cannot copy and paste text, so information must be retyped.

The screen is small, but the resolution is greater than that of early window
systems that had overlapping windows.
