[Fwd: URGENT: project submitted to Google Summer of Code]

2007-03-12 Thread Quim Gil
fyi, you don't need to be a maemo developer to propose ideas and propose
yourself as mentor of next Google Summer of Code.

See email below and , if you are interested, move fast.

Now it's for real!

The (long) form has been filled and now maemo is an organization
candidate in http://code.google.com/soc/ . The deadline was/is TODAY and
we will know if we are approved or not THIS WEDNESDAY.

Now, there are still two FUNDAMENTAL pieces that are still weak and need
to be strengthen NOW (and I mean *now*, not in a couple of hours).

Look this: http://maemo.org/maemowiki/GoogleSoC2007

- We need more ideas. I have done my best gathering ideas discussed in
this list, but you know what is still missing. Go and edit the wiki page
before Google reviews it (hopefully all of them are sleeping in
California now). ;) NOTE: you don't need to be an expert or to be
involved in the ideas you suggest. Good ideas are simply good ideas.

- We need more mentors. Yes, this is work... if we get a project for you
and you agree on taking it. By now it is just a declaration of serious
intentions... that may help maemo getting more projects or even get
approved at all. Count and average of half an hour a day assisting a
great student working on that functionality you have been missing for so
long.

GUARANTEED:

- You won't be forced to mentor a project you dislike.
- You won't be forced to keep mentoring a project if you don't have the
time.
- We will help and even substitute you if you are overwhelmed. Yes, we
know the unexpected happen in the best houses. But we are many, we know
about SoC and we can assist.

there any way to restore the n800, or somethig ???!

Hi Misael, first try this one - unplug your battery and then turn N800 on.

Hi :)

I'm just curious, what will this do? Restore the original settings or
something similar?

Thanks

[ 123.296722] JFFS2 warning: (1153) jffs2_sum_write_sumnode: Not

  These should AFAIK be harmless.

If i re-insert the card once the n800 is running the card seems fine
and has plenty of free space.

Any ideas?

What extra software you've installed to the device?

  streamer
  canola
  mapper
  terminal
  sudoku
  vnc
  mplayer gpe calendar
  nmap
  xgalaga
  erminig

AFAIK similarly to the builtin crawler, Canola is also using inotify on
the memory cards, so that could be triggering the bug on startup too
(by starting to go through the card contents when the bootup process
 mounts it).

Canola does use gnomevfs (i don't know if it uses inotify internally).

BUT, canola triggers a consistency check after boot, since MMC card
may be inexistent or changed. If things are still the same, it'll be
just a bunch of stat() calls (one per file), not that slow.

I see he has Mapper installed. By default, Mapper recommends
/media/mmc1/Maps to store downloaded files and Canola ships with
/media/mmc1 as media storage. This will make Canola scans every Map it
found, since maps are small JPEG, it stat(), open() and parse it...
:-/ You can remove /media/mmc1 from Canola and add more
specialized folders, like /media/mmc1/Music (if you have that).

I deleted a video from the card and then it worked fine. So it seems a
bad file can stop the device booting without any hint as to what the
problem might be!

Is this a bug that is fixed in the next firmware, if not what should i
file this against?

Thanks for the clues, Michael

Request for (major) help...

2007-03-12 Thread Tim
Hi,
I was wondering if there was anyone willing to communicate with me
via private email in order that I can fully understand a few things
about installing Maemo apps... I know this is a weird request -- and
I couldn't offer any compensation other than my undying gratitude --
but I am stumped by a few things.
Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you'd be willing to spend a few
minutes with me
 Thanks,
 Tim
P.S. Those of you on the InternetTabletTalk forum may see a similar
request... Please pardon the cross-post.

If you don't get much response to this, you might try simply posting
your questions to the list. That is why it exists, and you may be
surprised to find that other folks share your confusion on some points
and communicating in public allows everyone to benefit from the answers.
