Re: N900 GPS Recalibration

2010-03-15 Thread Gary
GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defence and was
intended for military use. Civilian access was granted in 1983 by US
President Ronald Regan with a downgraded accuracy of +/- 100 metres.
However, consumer grade GPS access has benefited since the year 2000
from the lifting of this restriction and now has an accuracy of +/- 10
metres, compared to the survey grade accuracy of +/- 10mm. The GPS
system is still funded and maintained by the United States Department
of Defence. The European Union is currently scheduled to launch a
Global Navigation Satellite System by 2013. This system will be called
‘Galileo.'

that this is the only way?

One can edit platformHTMLBindings.xml file (as root) and add own keybindings.
I don't have my N900 here so I don't know exact path but you can get it by
running 'dpkg -L microb-engine-common | grep platformHTML'. Or maybe it is in
microb-engine package. For N810 the file is in
/usr/lib/microb-engine/chrome/toolkit/content/global

Document top/bottom (cmd_scrollTop/cmd_scrollBottom) is currently set to
ctrl+home/end which is not that helpful for N900 :-)

Actually Home and End used to work in N900 (and it is easy to map some
key combinations to those keys), but it was broken in PR1.1. The bug is
marked as fixed for a few monthes:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7567 , but we still do not know
whether N900 users will get to enjoy this fix.

I would like to have nautilus like script based thing in maemo file

Moreover, i would like to write the same if that is not currently
 available.

You can add files to the current playlist within the media player by pressing
on the title until a context-menu pops up (I suppose the equivalent of a
right-click) and that gives you the option you're looking for. At a higher
level, you can do the same thing with a whole album.

N900: Git / symlink weirdness on ext3 sd card?

2010-03-15 Thread John Sullivan
I have my micro-sd card formatted as ext3. On that card, I have a git
repository. In that git repository, I have some symlinks. On other
computers with the same repository, the symlinks are symlinks. On the
N900 however, the symlinks have become just files, whose only content is
the name of the file they are supposed to target. So, foo should be a
symlink to bar. But instead, foo is a file with contents bar.

git status shows everything as normal -- it does not think anything has
been modified or is weird. git reset --hard HEAD does not change
anything.

The filesystem does not appear to be otherwise corrupted.

Any ideas what the heck is going on here?

Re: N900: Calibrating the accelerometers?

2010-03-15 Thread Martin Grimme
The accelerometers measure the acceleration along the 3 axes. When the
N900 lies on the table, the z-axis points downwards, measuring the
acceleration of gravity, which is 1g. If you tilt the device, portions
of the gravity vector get measured by the x and y sensors. With the
camera on it's back, the N900 does not lie flat on the table, so these
values look OK.

  Y: 0.02

I could find any position where all variables become close to 0.
Anyway, I don't know yet how it works. I guess the variables might be
related to the current angle on that axis, but the angle is expressed
  from -1.00 to 1.00.

Since it is called an accelerometer, isn't it supposed to tell the
  current acceleration in any axis?

Yes, it is. Therefore it's correctly showing acceleration of -0.95m/s²
downwards - which is the accel/force that makes you stay on the ground.
I'd say the accelerometer is working perfectly well. (Implying the
0.02m/s² on x/y axes are caused by jitter.)

 Hello Marcel

Did you intend to reply only to me or to the maemo-list?

Sorry, I meant to reply to the list. CC'ed it now.

Last time I checked, earth gravity's acceleration was 9.81m/s^2 ;-)

 Sounds reasonable actually...

Joking aside, if it is measuring acceleration indeed it must be in another
 unit, right?

If it's any unit at all. Maybe one could just convert it for human
 readability.

Those values of 0.02 can be attributed to either small vibrations in the
building where the table is placed or just hardware fluctuation. I just
would like to make sense of the readings.

If you get the same -0.95whateverunititis in every direction while
rotating the N900, I'd guess at least the hardware works okay.

Testing non-working FM transmitter

2010-03-15 Thread Tomasz Rybak
Hello,
I have n900 with FW 3.2010-02-8 with Polish settings.
My phone has been in service. After it returned I flashed
it with PR1.1.1 and after few days noticed that FM transmitter
is not working. When I try to enable it in Settings,
all I can see on the screen in window with message
FM transmitter disabled (Polish: Nadajnik UKF FM wyłączony)
and OK button - no way to change frequency or enable it.
I have changed regional settings to German, and got
basically the same message.
FM receiver seems to work - at least when I installed
FM Radio I was able to receive station.

How can I check if transmitter is not working because
service broken something or it is some disabled setting?
If so - how to enable it?
Nokia Poland (to which I wrote about problems with service
of my device) is silent about this problem.

Best regards.

I can't find find the Talk thread right now, but IIRC the way to reset
sensors was to shut down device and unplugging battery for a minute.

I just tried and still get the same tilted readings (0.09, -1.04,
0.09) from the accelerometers. :-(

RE: N900: Calibrating the accelerometers?

2010-03-15 Thread Aldon Hynes
When I set mine on a table, I get
X: -.04
Y: 0.00
Z: -1.07

When I shift it onto the edge of a table so it isn't propped up by the
camera lens cover, the numbers stay essentially the same, although X does
fluctuate down to the -.02 to -.03 range.

All of that said, for my purposes that seems to be more than close enough.

 Mine show

 X: 0.09
 Z: -1.02
 Y: 0.09

which translates to all applications using the accelerometers to
consider the unit to be slightly tilted when it's lying flat an the
surface of a table. (And yes, the table is not tilted. ;)

On the contrary, I need to tilt the unit to let X and Y become zero ar
 to center XEyes' pupils.

A friend's N900 shows the XEyes' pupils as expected, ie. centered while
the device lies on its back. I do not know this device's raw values,
 however.

According to a mail from Nokia I got today, there's no way to
 recalibrate the sensors...

What accDisplay-readings do other units produce? Maybe some other N900
 owners could post their values?

Can anybody confirm that behavior or tell me how to fix it on my device?

Hi again

I have found a bugreport. https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6859
As far as I can tell the Bugreport is a little chaotic and it is
possible that 2 Bugs got mixed together. But it is very much possible
that they are at least related if not the same.

In my case the Bug seems to only be present with the facebook app from
the package Extra protocol plugins for Conversations and Contacts
version 0.8 which requires the Pidgin protocols plugin for
Conversations and Contacts. And as a couple of people wrote the merged
IM-account (facebook) does not get unmerged but recreated. Which
suggests that there is something wrong with the check whether the
IM-account already exists.

If you too experience this problem please vote for the Bug
