[maemo-users] mamo-mapper_1.3.4mg1 vs. maemo-mapper_1.3.4 ?

2007-01-21 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi Marius,

the application installer on my Nokia 770 offers to update
installed maemo-mapper 1.3.4 with 1.3.4mg1 from your
repository at http://mg.pov.lt/770/dists/mistral/experimental/

In the corresponding source package's changelog I read:

maemo-mapper (1.3.4mg1) unstable; urgency=low
  * Apply patch by Albertas Agejevas for Microsoft Virtual Earth
compatibility (http://fridge.pov.lt/~alga/maemo-ve-1.3.4.patch).
 -- Marius Gedminas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sat, 20 Jan 2007 18:28:42 +0200

That's it? What URI do you use for MS-VE?

  regards, Armin.

[maemo-users] additional engines for the Maemo Internet Search applet

2006-11-17 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I have build some deb packages that add additional search engines to the
Maemo Internet Search (MIS) applet:
- yahoo.com
- amazon.com
- maemo.org
- maemo.org/bugzilla

Repository: http://armin-warda.de/maemo
Distribution: mistral
Component: user

Or download & install directly from
http://armin-warda.de/maemo/dists/mistral/user/binary-armel/

Before too many users ask me to create packages for additional
search engines: please have a look into the mis-*.deb
packages, there is no rocket science involved, it is just
a trivial xml-file and a png-icon for each search engine.

  regards, Armin.

[maemo-users] Script to refresh Maemo-Mapper's cache

2006-10-08 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

if you want to refresh all currently stored map tiles in your
Maemo-Mapper's cache directory with fresh Google maps or
satellite images, you might find these two skripts useful:

http://armin-warda.de/refresh_sats

The following program is necessary for the 'refresh_sats' script:

[maemo-users] should I disable lifeguard-reset?

2006-08-21 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

what do you think:

Does it make sense for a very Linux-experienced user (like me)
to disable "lifeguard-reset" on the Nokia770?

# flasher --set-rd-flags no-lifeguard-reset

Does this have any negative side-effects?

I don't doubt that for an unexperienced user with no Linux-skills
and only little knowledge of how the software on the Nokia770
works, this is an appropriate solution to initiate a reboot whenever
any essential software-component fails.

Yes, reboots fix many problems.

But wouldn't a skilled user be able to judge better than the
lifeguard in which situations a reboot would make sense,
and in which situations the reboot could be deferred until
e.g. important application data has been saved?

A spontaneous reboot leaves no chance to save the data you
might currently be working on...

Are you an experienced/skilled user?
Do you disable "lifeguard-reset"?

Besides just being able to disable/enable the lifeguard, to me it
would even make sense if the N770 would support another setting,
in which it only would advice the user that an essential component
just failed and a reboot would probably fix the problem.

  regards, Armin.

Of cause I would prefer to have my modifications (or something better,
with better code quality,..) included by Maemo-Mapper's author John
Costigan into the 'mainline' version.

[maemo-users] Modified Maemo-Mapper v1.1 with 2nd set of URI/Cache, option to operate with closed cover

2006-07-30 Thread Armin M. Warda
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=19351&postcount=167

Here is a modified version of John Costigan's Maemo-Mapper v1.1 with a
second set of URI/Cache, e.g. for easy switching between street maps
and satellite images. The ESC-hardware-key now toggles the URI/Cache
settings, while in the original version it toggles show/hide tracks.

The modified version also has the option to operate with closed
device cover: you can disable the default behaviour to disconnect
the bluetooth GPS connection when the cover is closed, if you
unset 'Tools' -> 'Control Panel' -> Connectivity' -> 'Disconnect when
cover on device'
(Gconf-Key /system/osso/connectivity/IAP/disconnect_on_cover).

John's Maemo-Mapper focuses on in-car navigation. My modifications
are useful for non-car navigation, e.g. while cycling, hiking,
walking, running: satellite images are sometimes (but not always ;-)
more useful than street maps for off-road navigation, operation with
closed device cover is useful if you temporarily store the device in
a pocket, but still want to record your track.

Before I already applied these modifications to version 1.0.1, now I
ported my modifications to the current version 1.1.

of the track or track segments?

P.S.: I attached a sample Maemo-Mapper generated GPX-File.

swapon/off via CPU/Mem/Screenshot applet (Re: [maemo-users] Swap on mmc after six or more months)

2006-06-21 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I justed noticed, that John Costigan (the author of Maemo-Mapper)
modified Jakub Pavelek's original "CPU/Mem/Screenshot applet" to
include a generic 'execute & memorize an arbitrary command' feature:

http://gnuite.com:8080/nokia770/
http://gnuite.com:8080/nokia770/load-applet-run/load-applet-run_0.4.3-2_armel.deb

John's approach is very well suited to manually swapoff/on: you simply
execute e.g. "/usr/bin/sudo /sbin/swapon /dev/mmcblk0p2" once via the
"run" menu item of the applet, check the "Save as:" checkbox and name
this command "swapoff". Same with "swapon". (/etc/sudoers has to be
edited in advance.)

John's "run" modification of Jakub's applet is a generalization of my
"swapon/off" modification, and it looks less buggy.

To cut a long story short: there is no need anymore for my
"CPU/Mem/Screenshot applet with swapon/off". Please use John's.

  regards, Armin.

Re: [maemo-users] Swap on mmc after six or more months

2006-06-20 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I added a modified 'CPU/Mem/Screenshot applet with swapon/off' to the
ITOS2006 Maemo Application Catalog
http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006

Again I modified Jakub's original version of the CPU/Mem/Screenshot
applet to include swapon/off. This is useful for those of us who
prefer to continue to have their swap in a dedicated partition on the
MMC, e.g. '/dev/mmcblk0p2'.

Default now with ITOS2006 is to have a swap file '/media/mmc1/.swap',
which is within the filesystem in '/dev/mmcblk0p1'. You do not need
the modified applet if you are happy with the new default swap file
in ITOS2006!

There are pros and cons with swap files versus swap partitions. For
example ITOS2006 automagically swapoffs the swap file if the
filesystems gets umounted when you connect the device via USB to the
PC (and automagically swapons after the USB disconnect caused to
mount '/media/mmc1' again). On the other hand, a swap partition
simply can remain active in this situation, it is not affected by USB
handling. The downside of swap partition versus swap file comes with
phyiscal MMC ejection: With a swap partition you have to manually
swapoff via the applet before you eject the card (and manually swapon
again after MMC insertion), while ITOS2006 somehow automagically
swapoffs the swap file before ejection (and swapons after MMC
insertion). If you fail to swapoff before MMC ejection the device
will crash.

Note: If you want to use swapon/off of the modified CPU/Mem/Screenshot
applet you have to edit /etc/sudoers, which requires you to gain
root.

Warning: Swap on dedicated partitions, messing around on your device
being root, and editing /etc/sudoers is not intended for end-users
but only for experts. Use with care. You have been warned. Create a
backup. If unsure - stay with the default swap file in ITOS2006 and
use Jakub's original applet without swapon/off.

[maemo-users] include ITOS2006 App Cat in www.bleb.org/software/770/apps.rss

2006-06-19 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi Andrew,

your much loved RSS feed
  http://www.bleb.org/software/770/apps.rss
scans the ITOS2005 application catalog
  http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog
for changes, but traffic has already begun to shift to
the ITOS2006 application catalog
  http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006

Of cause we could create a new RSS feed for the new App Catalog.

But I think this won't be necessary, and extending the current
RSS feed to include both App Catalogs - ITOS2005 and ITOS2006 -
would be OK, because changes in the old catalog already have
started to become less frequent, and I expect ITOS2005 to become
obsolete very soon, because already ITOS2006 BETA is so much
better than all previous ITOS2005 releases!

So I would suggest to simply let evolve your ITOS2005 feed
into an ITOS2006 feed...

  regards, Armin.

2006-06-13 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

is it possible to restore Settings (and Bookmarks, eMails),
that I backuped running ITOS2005, after I will have
reflashed the device with ITOS2006?

Please explain, what are the obvious problems with a
separate partition? Thanks!

  Hi,

I am using a 31MBytes swap partition /dev/mmcblk0p2 on

No indication of excessive wear.

For swapon/off I use load-plugin-aw v0.2.7-2 .

Re: [maemo-users] osso_rss_feed_reader hangs on http://lwn.net/headlines/rss

2006-05-05 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

the current http://lwn.net/headlines/rss (Linux Weekly News) feed
can be processed again without hanging the osso_rss_feed_reader.

I preserved the 'malicious' rss file, which reproduces the hang, here:
http://armin-warda.de/lwn.net-headlines-rss

This has been reported as bug 466 to http://bugs.maemo.org/ by me.

  regards, Armin.

[maemo-users] osso_rss_feed_reader hangs on http://lwn.net/headlines/rss

2006-05-03 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

starting today, whenever I refresh the http://lwn.net/headlines/rss
(Linux Weekly News) feed, the osso_rss_feed_reader (News reader)
hangs.

Any similiar experiences or ideas?

  More details:

Since november last year I have been reading this LWN feed all the
time without problems on my Nokia 770, with all SW versions,
1.2005.42-9 through 5.2006.13-7, which I am using now.

When I remove the LWN feed from the News reader, I am able to refresh
all feeds again, without hang. But if I try to add the LWN feed
again, via the URL http://lwn.net/headlines/rss, the News reader
hangs immediately and can only be killed from an xterm. (Then I have
to kill five processes of osso_rss_feed_reader, but sometimes this
does not help, because the News reader icon does not disappear from
the task list, preventing to restart another instance of the News
reader again, unless I reboot.)

What I already tried without success:
- rebooted the device several times
- run the device without swap on the RS-MMC
- removed the favicons and feeds directories from
  /home/user/.osso_rss_feed_reader/cache/
I have not yet reflashed the device.

The only thing that avoids the hang is not to add the LWN feed.

I manually downloaded the rdf from http://lwn.net/headlines/rss to the
browser, to me the rdf looks sane. It should not hang the News
reader. I have archived a copy of this rdf, just in case, the problem
disappears without notice, and still anybody want's to analyze it.

  regards, Armin.

[maemo-users] does 'some-gnu-utils_0.1_arm.deb' really cause an installer hang?

2006-03-27 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hello,

I just noticed, that 'NealWalfield' added to the Maemo Application
Catalog Wiki entry for package 'some-gnu-utils_0.1_arm.deb' the
following text:

Causes installer to hang with SE2005_3_2005_51_13 firmware!

I did not notice such a problem with this package, and never heard
about similiar problems before, with any firmware version.

Can somebody confirm the problem or no-problem?

  regards, Armin,

P.S.: How can I find out how to contact 'NealWalfield', who added
this to revision 535 of the Wiki?

Re: [maemo-users] can I repair/reset the mail app without reflashing the device?

2006-03-14 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I removed everything in
  /home/user/.osso/osso-email/
  /home/user/apps/email/
and rebooted the device, then manually defined all my mailboxes.

This solved my problem.

I identified these directories by looking into the file
/etc/osso-backup/applications/osso-email.conf, which contains
the locations that are routinely backuped by the osso-backup
application.

Btw. I did not remove /home/user/.osso-email/, which contains
the AddressBook.xml, thus all email addresses were preserved.

Of cause, by deleting the contents of the two directories above,
I lost all emails in the Inbox, Outbox and Drafts folder, but these
were inaccessible anyway due to the corruption.

As a suprise to me, all emails in the Archive folder, that
previously seemed to be gone, reappeared after I emptied the
two directories. Magic. Guess these must be stored elsewhere,
probably on the RS-MMC?

  regards, Armin.

I did a 'rm -rf /home/user/apps/email/*/*' , and I rebooted the

I suspect there must be some other file(s) which record the
internal state of the folders/mailboxes, and that this internal

Any ideas?

I am afraid, that backup+reflash+restore would not solve the
problem, if the problem would be preserved in the settings that
are backuped, thus that I really would have to reflash without
backup/restore... Of cause I want to avoid this.

[maemo-users] can I repair/reset the mail app without reflashing the device?

2006-03-13 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

the mail application on my Nokia 770 is somewhat confused,
I suspect the stored mailbox files got currupted: for example
when I receive a mail into the inbox, close the mail app, open
the inbox again, the email I just received is gone. It looks like
all archived mails are gone, too. The drafts folder is empty, too.

How can I repair/reset the mailboxes of the mail app on the
Nokia 770 without reflasing the device?

Should I delete everything below /home/user/apps/email/ ?
Or just delete the cache.xml files in these directories?
Or some gconf-files?

  Armin.

P.S.: My 770 is on release 3.2005.51-13.

[maemo-users] Enhanced Load-Plugin applet with swapon/off (load-plugin-aw_0.2.7-1)

2006-02-27 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I have added a swapon/off menu-item to Jakub's Load-Plugin,

http://koti.welho.com/jpavelek/tmp/770/

which he recently released under the LGPL.

The swapon/off feature will be useful for those who have a swap on the
RS-MMC. (You really should swapoff before you unplug the RS-MMS...)
Here are some screenshots of the enhanced Load-Plugin applet:

http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/Snap00.png
http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/Snap01.png
http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/Snap02.png

The enhanced Load-Plugin applet can be downloaded here:

http://www.arminwarda.mynetcologne.de/load-plugin-aw_0.2.7-1_arm.deb

Source code and patches to transform Jakub's original source into the
enhanced version are available, too.

The Load-Plugin runs as 'user', swapon and swapoff need 'root',
thus you have to add the following line to /etc/sudoers manually:
user ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/swapon *, /sbin/swapoff *

The Load-Plugin does not create a swap file or device, you must
already have done that, as described elsewhere.

Please remember, this modified Load-Plugin applet has only
been tested by a few and could ruin your device. Be careful.

Do you think the Load-Plugin applet with swapon/off is
end-user-ready and should now be linked to from the
Maemo ApplicationCatalog Wiki?

  Armin.

[maemo-users] who is listening on 1025/udp?

  Hi,

what program is listening on 1025/udp?
Looks like this port is used to send out DNS-queries.
Can somebody explain this?

I can explain this.

The ping executable on my SuSE 9.3 has the SUID-bit set:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> ls -la /bin/ping
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 31404 2005-03-19 20:09 /bin/ping

If I remove it with "chmod u-s" (as root), then as non-root
user I will get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> ping localhost
ping: icmp open socket: Operation not permitted

Thus, if you want to be able to ping as user on your N770,
root would have to do a "chmod u+s" on the ping-executable.

What uptime have you achieved yet?

I read the limit were 32Mbytes, so I use 31000 kbytes of swap
in /dev/mmcvlkp2, which is more than enough. 16-20MBytes
would also be sufficient.

Maybe. I did not notice it. But now that you mention it...

No, I think swap on a N770 is a plus for stability. I have been using
it for about 4 weeks now.

What I observe: if I have an OS crash or spontaneous reboot, then the
probablility of more of these unwelcome events to occur during the
next minutes is very high. But if the device ran stable for a while -
let's say a day - then the probablility is very high that it keeps
running without crashes or spontaneous reboots for several days.

Thus, on my N770 the OS crashes or spontaneous reboots really arrive
in bulks (no negexp inter-arrival time distribution, thus these can't
be independent events).

What I mean with 'spontaneous reboot': not all reboots seem to be
caused by real OS crashes, there seems to be a kind of watchdog that
automagically reboots the device if it notices an essential process
is missing or misbehaving. Probably you could turn this watchdog off.
But I think for an end-user - not a hacker - this watchdog is an
appropriate thing.

You can enter the URL file:/// in the Opera web browser to read-access
the filesystem.

It would help if you provided details, exact file locations, names,

Thanks!

[maemo-users] problems after 'swapon /dev/mmcblk0p2' with 3.2005.51-13

2006-01-13 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

similiar as described by Tommy Cheng in

  http://www.dillernet.com/apple/2005/12/27/making-swap/#comments

I partitioned my 512MB RS-MMC into two partitions:

  /dev/mmcblk0p1 = 470MB fat16/vfat
  /dev/mmcblk0p2 = 40MB swap

I have not yet added the /var/lib/install/etc/init.d/mmcswap.sh script
to auto-detect & -activate the /dev/mmcblk0p2 swap device on boot.
Before I do this, I want to verify, that it does not render the 770
unusable. And here's my problem:

When I manually activate the swap from the osso-xterm with

  swapon /dev/mmcblk0p2

most of the time, the 770 reboots within 2-4 seconds.

Sometimes it keeps running, but a popup with a low memory warning
appears immediately after the 'swapon' and I am not able to open any
application, the 770 keep on complaining about low memory. And the
'free' command tells me that the swap is not used at all.

  Has anybody seen this before?

My 770 is on release 3.2005.51-13.

  Armin.

[maemo-users] wget, gcal, bc, find, xargs, ftp for Nokia 770

2006-01-05 Thread Armin M. Warda
  Hi,

I cross-compiled some GNU utilities and 'tnftp', see
  http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog
for the deb packages.

This was very easy, no actual porting (change of source code)
necessary, just setup the scratchbox environment as described in the
Maemo tutorial
  http://maemo.org/platform/docs/tutorials/Maemo_tutorial.html
download the sources of these apps, ./configure && make, strip the
executables, build the deb packages.

You really don't have to be a developer to 'port' such standard Unix
applications to Maemo.

Btw, I can confirm that performance has improved over these releases.
I have the impression that the latest release improves performance of
task switching and of the News reader application.

You are right, the Maemo web page still serves the previous version.

When I look at the firmware version history of my Nokia 770

  1.2005.42-9
  2.2005.45-8
  3.2005.51-13

then I can guess what X..WW-B stands for:

  X = official release number
   = year
  WW = week of year
  B = internal build number

I just upgraded* to 3.2005.51-13, which I downloaded from

Success, no problems.

*Upgrade = Backup to MMC, Flash new Image, Restore from MMC

live in /var/lib/install and appear in the 'Extras' menu).
