I usually lock the keys and screen of my N800. When the Alarm clock
application is triggered the screen turns on (a good thing), but if it
is not attended the screen stays on until the battery dies! (bad thing)
Is this a bug in the alarm software?

xterm Re: further beating on OS2008 beta

2007-12-03 Thread Daniel M German

Hi James,

You forgot to mention that there isn't a termcap install by default!

I agree with you. THe xterm is not very usable in its current
state. Try using emacs with that window.

I have downloaded the old xterm (version 0.14) and recompiled it for
OS 2008 (I had to change some of the application names so it would not
collide with osso-xterm). It works, except that the
shortcuts just don't work (I have to check why).

But, when used with an external keyboard, it gives you a nice full
frame xterm that does not give any annoying messages when you press
some Ctrl keys. And it brings tabs back.

Sometime ago I was trying to find the xterm maintainer. Apparently
nobody is fully in charge of it. This is probably the reason it sucks
so badly. I suspect the person in charge (and please, if you, the
current maintainer reads this, it is not an attack on your skills as a
developer, or on your good will trying to improve xtemr) does not use
the xterm for anything other than executing shell commands

I have some patches that allow to send special characters (such
as Ctrl-_) to the xterm (under OS 2007). I never got confirmation that
were committed. (they were badly needed to run emacs inside an xterm).

The repository where I got it from is :

 https://garage.maemo.org/svn/osso-xterm/osso-xterm/trunk

but it has not been changed since Sept of this year. The OS 2008 xterm
is not being hosted there (unless it is a branch).

Perhaps we need to start a project to create an maemo-xterm that is
intended to be used for more than just shell commands.

I can report that the wireless keyboard Logitech S530 Mac works very
well. The keyboard has its own batteries, and the N800 is able to
power the wireless transceive without a problem. But I have not been
able to get the wireless mouse working (which uses simultaneously the
same transceiver).

Car holder for the N800?

Hi everybody,

I own a 770 and its navigation kit. I also own a N800.

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy only the holder for the
N800 instaed of the entire navigation kit again? The nokia web site
does not list it as separate item.

Thanks a lot!

how to turn off and lock the n800 (answer)

thanks Kemal,

I finally had time to try this and it works as Kemal explains.

So recapitulating, for those who were asking how to do it:

* When the PowerKeyShortAction=softpoweroff the keys are locked

* When the PowerKeyLongAction=softpoweroff the keys are NOT locked

If you are interested in having the keys locked and the display turned
off in one single action:

* modify /etc/mce/mce.ini (be careful, and make a backup copy just in case):

   change PowerKeyShortAction to:

   PowerKeyShortAction=softpoweroff

   and change PowerKeyLongAction to:

   PowerKeyLongAction=menu

* now if you press the power button (I)

1) Short press -> turn off screen, and lock keys, and disable screen sensitivity

To wake it up -> press (I) for at least 1.5 seconds (this is the
  default timeout for longPress)

2) Long press (at least 1.5 seconds) -> brings menu up

"hidden features" Re: 3 months...

2007-10-11 Thread Daniel M German

Thanks Josh, I wished I had known this last week when I had to cut and
paste a computer generated password ;) What I did was to save the
file, then load it inside emacs, then cut-and-paste. What a pain!

there are a number of "hidden" features of the N800. For example, it
took me some time to discover that the "ok" button (the one in the
middle of the arrow keys) switched to the thumb keyboard.

Is there a place where all this info is documented?

3 months of use: some comments about the N800

2007-10-11 Thread Daniel M German

I am not sure this is the best place to post this information. But
hopefully somebody at Nokia will be listening.

After almost 3 months of use I have to say the N800 is the best PDA I
have ever owned. I just came back from a 10 days trip where it became
my main computer, and I am very happy with it.

These are some comments that perhaps could be addressed to make the
next generation of the N800 an even better product.

** Mute button. When the alarms kick in it takes several seconds to
start be able to silence it (or when you remove the
headphones). Sometimes that is embarrassing, like when you are in
a meeting.

** Separate the <+>  <-> buttons a little

** Make the screen of a harder material (perhaps glass like the iphone). I
have light
   scratches on it already.

** Thumb keyboard. I am not exactly how to reproduce it, but sometimes it
inserts repeated
copies of sections of the text.

** PDF reader. Allow me to open more than one document at the same time.

** Web browser: it needs cut-and-paste

** Nokia's Image browser "Images". It is a pain to zoom-in and scroll
the image. I was trying to view a subway map with it and it was a
total pain. When one changes to fullscreen the image gets resized
automatically. In my opinion the image browser should behave more
like the web browser, allowing to pan around the image with the
stylus.

** Soft-power off mode. I have enabled it with a long press of the on-button.
Unfortunately it does not disable the keys. It would be nice if it
did, except for a long-press of the on-botton again.

** File manager.

*** When I move files from one directory to another I'd like the file manager
to stay in the source directory, not the destination one. Perhaps an option
will
do.

*** Support for different font sizes.

The following are comments regarding third party applications:

** Mapper: One thing missing is the ability to goto to a designated
POI. The only current option is to go to the nearest.

** GPE-calendar.

*** It messes appointments when one changes timezone. In my opinion
appointments
should stay at the same time, even if the time zone changes.

*** It needs to update the end-time to be at the very least after the
start-time.
It is cumbersome to have to change the date twice: once for the
start time, and once for the end time.

*** It badly needs a search function.
