About UI, if you want simple interfaces to automatize process, and
that should be the main need for Maemo right now, due limited input

toolkits (it's just GTK now, but can/will be extended), it's also
available for Maemo (doing Hildon stuff).
Maybe it's a silly thought, but what about doing the UI stuff in
javascript within a browser window?

Actually, that's a question I'd like answered - it's what I've been
thinking of doing for a project, but haven't gotten around to yet. How
is the javascript implementation for browsers that run on the 770?

I'm in a similar boat. I bought my 770 about 4 months ago, so I'm now
stuck with an obsolete unit.

I'm reminded that back when Apple was making the Newton, they offered
early purchasers an exchange policy when the newer models came out - it
wasn't free, but it was reasonable, and motivated me to trade in my
older Newton for the 2100 (the last model made, and still a really nice
machine).

Re: [maemo-users] ipass at t-mobile hotspots?

There used to be some ways to directly access IPASS without a client,
but something has changed - I was hoping that somebody knew if this is
still possible - or if somebody is working on an IPASS client for the 770.

Miles,

I don't believe that IPASS has a client for Linux. Here is the url to
the www page at the IPASS www site where their client side and server
side software are described and there is no mention of a *nix client.

They don't even have a client for Windows Mobile 5.0 as of yet.

Felix,

Thanks! Now if it were only so easy under Windows. Sigh...

On a Mac, turn on wireless, click on the icon in the status bar and create a

connections from that network, go to the System Preferences, Sharing,
Internet and turn on Internet Sharing on the built in Ethernet connections.

I am not sure you can use bluetooth as you described - bluetooth devices
advertise their category. I would expect that unless you laptops advertise
themselves as modems, the 770 would not be able to use them. Also, obviously
the range for bluetooth would be much smaller and you'd have to be near the
laptop and at that point might as well use the laptop for your browsing.

It would seem that there should be a way to:

- use the laptop sitting on my office desk (hard-wired connection to the
office LAN, wi-fi card) as a router, and/or,
- plug a bluetooth dongle into the laptop and use it as a router, and/or,
- connect via a usb cable and use the laptop as a router

But.. so far, I keep running into the limitations of WinXP internet
connection sharing - it doesn't like to use the fixed IP associated with
our internal LAN.

I'm sure that somebody has already figured this out - so any suggestions
or pointers would be much appreciated.

Also.. any comments re. doing the same thing, but with a Mac (my home
machine).

Thanks very much,

I'm sure all three are doable, but I don't know how.

Using an ad-hoc wireless network might be simplest.

Well sure, but that requires some kind of routing on the PC, and basic
connection sharing doesn't like using real IP addresses.

I need something to act as a router or proxy. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

[maemo-users] getting started?

2006-09-15 Thread Miles Fidelman

Hi Folks,

Now that I've just received my brand new 770 - any suggestions regarding
mailing lists to join (besides this one), tutorials, how-tos, key web
sites, and so forth?

My intended use is a combination of low-key development and as a PIM (if
I can pull the pieces together).

Thanks very much,
