[Mailman-Users] mailman and virtual domains

2003-09-04 Thread Klavs Klavsen
Hi guys,

I'm new to mailman, but I managed to get it set up on my Gentoo Linux :)

I wanted it to support virtual domains, because I'd like to run it on
several domains (obviously :)

I have ofcourse searched the archives in search for answers, and since I
couldn't find any answers that worked for me, I turn to you as a last
resort.

I only have one problem left, if I set it up to service one of the
virtual domains, the welcome to your new mailing list (and to users too)
it uses my primary domain (vsen.dk - see the Defaults.py settings below)
as the domainname :(

Also I was wondering if it is possible to have lists with the same name
(f.ex. news) for different virtual domains.

my mm_cfg.py looks like this:
MTA = 'Postfix'
POSTFIX_STYLE_VIRTUAL_DOMAINS =
['virkpaanettet.dk','karismacentret.dk','defaulttest.virkpaanettet.dk']
OWNERS_CAN_DELETE_THEIR_OWN_LISTS = 1
#VIRTUAL_HOSTS = {}

add_virtualhost('virkpaanettet.dk','virkpaanettet.dk')
add_virtualhost('www.defaulttest.virkpaanettet.dk','defaulttest.virkpaanettet.dk')
add_virtualhost('www.karismacentret.dk','karismacentret.dk')

a snipppet of Defaults.py is:
DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'vsen.dk'
DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'vsen.dk'
DEFAULT_URL_PATTERN = 'http://%s/mailman/'

Thank you for reading this far - I hope you can help.

[Mailman-Users] Mailman 2.1.2 and htdig again.

2003-09-04 Thread Glenn Sieb
Ok. I've finally got some time (between work and things going on with my
parents lately) to try and fix this problem.

I've moved my old mailman directory. I've reconfigured and recompiled
2.1.2 with the following patches (in order):

indexing-2.1.2-0.1.patch
htdig-2.1.2-0.3.patch
templates-2.1.2-0.1.patch

did a bare ./configure
did a make install

Created the mailman site list

Created a site password

Downloaded  installed postfix-to-mailman-2.1.py

Restarted postfix, launched mailmanctl, sent test message to new list,

Message was added to archive. I go to archive--I can read it fine... I
even went at this point and ran /usr/local/bin/python -S

went to search the archive.

I get this:

[Mailman-Users] Changing list admin password for several lists at once

2003-09-04 Thread D . J . Morriss
I'm the site admin, and I have a list owner who has 30+ lists. He has just
taken over from someone who has left, and I've managed to make him the new list
owner with a shell script calling config_list to change the 'owner' attribute.

Now, I'd like to give him new passwords for all of his lists, but would like
to do this from the command line. How can I change the list admin password
in this way?

I've had a look in the FAQ, but there's nothing there that helps.

Mailman version 2.0.11

Thanks,
Dave

It's arguably a decent overall policy, but it fails in the case of Sobig-F
which ordinarily forges the sender. Bouncing Sobig amounts to an attack on
an innocent party...particularly if more than a smallish part of the
incoming message is included.

Other worms munge the envelope sender [SMTP MAIL FROM: command] (for example
by incrementing or decrementing the second character of the envelope sender
local part [Magistr, at least some of the Magistr versions] but leave the
From: real); others munge From: but leave the envelope sender real.

So unless you want to build a table of viruses and worms and the right way
to bounce or not bounce, and maintain it for new inventions, it's become
kinder not to bounce, but to drop on the floor. Likewise, sending a notice
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] doesn't accomplish anything either (those
messages get tossed unread).

Reliable mail delivery has suffered blows from both the Spammers and the
worm/virus crowd, and doesn't exist any more.

It will be nice to retire and give up all my email accounts.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Mail getting bounced

2003-09-04 Thread Jon Carnes
Your MTA is misconfigured. You do not have list.serversunited.com as
an entry in your /etc/mail/local-host-names file (assuming a newbie
Sendmail error).

After you add that entry, and any others that you need, then you need to
stop and restart sendmail.

Hope that is helpful.

BTW: in anticipation of other startup errors... check out the FAQ,
particulary 3.14 which deals with the most common problems in getting
mailman setup and runnig.

As always, Good Luck!

[Mailman-Users] mailman interface with other fields?

2003-09-04 Thread Nils Puhlmann
Hello all,
Is it possible to change the sign-up interface of mailman to include other
fields?
What I want to accomplish is that people also fill in for example their
location, age, hobby and so on and that all of that is stored in the list
database.
Is this possible with the current version or is something planned for a
future release?

thanks, Nils

[Mailman-Users] Host name problem

2003-09-04 Thread George Booth
Mailman Version: 2.0.13
OS: Redhat Linux

Hi Mailman users,

Currently, we're migrating from Majordomo to Mailman, and have run into a host
name issue. The email server we use has one domain, while we use an aliasing
system for our email addresses; for instance, my alias is [EMAIL PROTECTED], but
this mail would be forwarded through our LDAP system to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], which is also the server our Mailman lists are on.
This causes a problem with list names and the admin email addresses for each
list. Changing the host name for each list to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is how
our system needs to operate, causes the problem of having
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to appear, which needs to remain as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In order to get [EMAIL PROTECTED] to work, we would have to add, for
over 1000 lists, that alias into our routing system, from which our LDAP draws
information. That would be for listname-request, listname-admin,
listname-owner, etc. We would rather not have to go through that. It would be
much simpler if there were a way to modify the default message that Mailman
sends out when someome subscribers, when user password notifications go out
once a month, etc.

Is there, perhaps, a central location that I've not run across as yet to modify
these emails to provide for 2 different host names (one for the list address,
one for the administration addresses)?

I'll be happy to clarify any part of this that I may not have made clear. :)

Thanks,

George

Even better, has anyone done this using exim as the MTA?

[Mailman-Users] Problem with listheaders

2003-09-04 Thread Christian Schoepplein
Hi!

I've a little problem with my listheaders. I don't know why, but for
example the snederentry aon my site looks like this:

Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The same entry for this list looks different:

Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What is responsible for the differenze? Is this a mailman or a MTA
problem? I'm using mailman 2.1.2 and postfix 2.0.12.

Best regards,
Schoeppi

I don't know sendmail enough to give you this info (I'm a happy Postfix

Just to be sure, use telnet to contact your mailman server from the curlprit

If you use some regular FROM and TO address that your mailman server have to

Did you check your MTA conf files regarding IP access to the SMTP server ?
If only one IP or subnet was allowed to pass emails thru your mailman
server, and you change that IP and/or subnet when migrating to a new server,
the mailman server will reject any attempt.

[Mailman-Users] Configuration problem...

2003-09-04 Thread Anders Norrbring
Hi everybody,

I hope somebody can help me out with a small problem, when accessing the
'listinfo' page, the admin address line gets wrong, it shows 'Send questions
or comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED]' where the correct address of
course should be the domain name WITHOUT the leading 'www'. I can't seem to
find the point to adjust..

My mm_cfg.py looks like this:

def _(s):
 return s
add_language('en',   _('English (USA)'),   'iso-8859-1')
del _
DEFAULT_HOST_NAME = 'the-server.net'
DEFAULT_URL = 'http://www.the-server.net/mailman/'
MAILMAN_OWNER = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' % DEFAULT_HOST_NAME

From the command line, you'd want the --fromall option to
remove_members. (Try a 'remove_members --help' for all the

[Mailman-Users] Membership List - Listing All

2003-09-04 Thread Kenneth Jacker
(Mailman-2.1b3+)

I must be really stupid! Though I've used regexprs for years, I can't
seem to create one that will show *all* members. I thought that .*
would work, but it doesn't.

Why do I need to use this in the Find Member entry box?

For some reason, sometimes I go to the membership page and see only
one member.  Why I don't know (I haven't explicitly requested a
sub-set). So, I'm trying to get the entire list displayed again.

I searched the WWW, but I didn't find :-(

Thanks for any help,

[Mailman-Users] Archive Dating Problem - real hassle

2003-09-04 Thread Jeremy Portzer
Hello,

I'm having trouble getting the archives to show the correct dates in
mailman version 2.1.2 (running on Red Hat Linux 7.3).

I have some lists that I copied to my current server from a previous
mail host (which was running 2.0.x, but that should be irrelevant). I
copied the archives and concatonated the mbox files of the new and old
archives. I made sure to include a blank line between messages in the
mbox files, as suggested in the FAQ, and the mbox file appears correct
when viewed with mailx (the mail comamnd in Linux) and pine.

However, when I regenerate the archives from the mbox file, by removing
the old archive directory and running mailman/bin/arch , many of the
messages are dated incorrectly. Some of the messages archive fine, but
others are given the _current_ date and time, instead of the date on the
message. This is very annoying as it means I have a huge number of
messages in August 2003 which do not belong there, and the original
date/time information is lost! When I look at the messages in question
in the mbox file, they appear to be properly formatted with correct
Date: and From  headers.

In previous versions of mailman, there was a configuration flag on whether
to follow the date/time of the message Date: header, or the one from the
mbox format From line. However, I can't seem to find this option in
mailman 2.1.2. Why was this removed? Andrew Klaassen asked the same
thing at
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2003-August/030818.html
with no response. Can someone please explain?

Thanks for any ideas!

 Thanks for any help,

Not to be obtuse, but maybe you should use the command line and the
Mailman tool: list_members.

Also, You can configure your lists to show more than the standard 30
members per web page (in the membership management area of the
web-admin). Change the value in ~mailman/Mailman/Defaults.py by copying
it to mm_cfg.py and then changing it to whatever you like. I normally
set it to:
  DEFAULT_ADMIN_MEMBER_CHUNKSIZE = 100

Good luck. I hope you find what your looking for.

BTW: the Web-admin help has a really nice section on regular expressions
as used by Python - very illuminating.

yes.

Even better, has anyone done this using exim as the MTA?
nope, postfix.

Any information, comments or config samples would be useful.
I'd show you diffs, but CVS is busted for me (apparently the hostname changed
from cvs.mailman.sourceforge.net to just cvs.sourceforge.net, and I'm not good
enough with CVS to know if I can just go change that in all the Root files and
expect it to work.)

Pretty much all I did was add in a new named arg mail_options=[XVERP] to the
call to conn.sendmail() in Handlers/SMTPDirect.py (because that's how you get
Postfix to add the VERP info, just send it that option on the connection).
