If the list is anonymous, then doing this kind of thing would eliminate
the anonymity, and therefore presumably violate the basic purpose of
 the list.

Otherwise, don't run it as an anonymous list.

Sorry I guess I should clarify. I have the discussion list set to
anonymous. Because I want email sent from the list email and replied
back to the list rather than the poster (so every one gets all posts
and replies). But I want the senders real name inserted into the
header, message, or footer (as a forced signature in a way). It will
dummy proof the list. Because the members of the site will forget to
sign the email or forget to CC to the list when replying. But it is
important to identify the sender. For several reasons, mainly because
the members of the list are competing businesses and they will want to
know exactly who they are replying to.

I know all this defeats the purpose of an anonymous list. But it has
to be as easy as possible or the members won't use it. So what ever I
can do to insure this will make every thing better.

How about the following settings:

anonymous_list = No
first_strip_reply_to = Yes
reply_goes_to_list = This List

If this is not acceptable, then you have to hack the code to do what
you want.

[Mailman-Users] Sender Name in message

2007-01-08 Thread liquid
I'm running Mailman 2.1.5

I've looked through the archives and have yet to find an answer to this.

I'm running an anonymous discussion list. The list is setup so replies
are by directed back to the list.

I would like to be able to add the senders/posters name (the
(optional) name that is in the system) to the header, message or footer.

I want it this way to dummy proof the list by forcing a signature.

Any way this can be done?

You might want to read FAQ 3.15 as a start. It tells you how to
enable personalization on an installation, and how to set it up per
list. Once enabled, you can click on any of the 'about' links when
you're browsing the admin site for your list and it gives you pointers
on how to add personalized messages to the message.

Do keep in mind that you're taking a performance hit with
personalization. So be careful with that.

I have personalization turn on but I didn't think it had a variable

thing? I know it has the TO: username variable. But thats not what I'm

Log in to your admin site, go under the 'Non-digest options' and
enable the personalize option. Then click the 'Details for msg header'
link in the next box below that personalization option. Read the
instructions.

So that if the mail bounces, the bounce will be returned to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of to the list or the OP, and automated
bounce processing will work.

Actually, it should suffice that this address is the envelope sender,
but some non-compliant MTAs send the bounce to Sender: or Errors-To:
so SMTPDirect.py sets these to the envelope sender.

This is a separate issue that really doesn't have anything to do with
Mailman, per-se.

You need to check out: http://postmaster.aol.com/

Follow their instructions for Is your mail to AOL being blocked? and
Would you like to apply for the AOL Whitelist?

Once I did that, I no longer had anyone complaining about mail from
lists on my server being blocked.

[Mailman-Users] Sender Name

2002-05-24 Thread John Wildgrube

I know that Mailman was not necessarily designed to be a distribution
list manager, but I have a few lists that I have created for this
purpose. What I am curious about is whether or not there is a way for a
message, when sent to a list, to appear as if sent by
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf
of User Name

Any information would be much appreciated.
