[MlMt] MM crashes Windowserver?

2022-11-11 Thread Sam Birch
That beta is older than Ventura so I'm not surprised it's causing problems. Why
don't you try the latest test build? Hold the option key while you check for
updates. The test builds are usually quite stable.

Knowing how many users are using each “hidden” preference would
probably be useful, too. I imagine keeping all of those working isn’t

I'm to blame for this (as with all things related to MailMate). The
starting point was major changes to the message view of MailMate
which then cascaded into other parts of MailMate eventually making it
very hard to make updates which would not break existing features for
some users.

Any sustainable software development cycle has to include phasing out
old non-essential features. There is also a natural reluctance to
negatively impact existing users. This is especially true in a close
user community like MailMate’s, where we all can interact directly
with the solo developer.

Why not spend some quality time re-assessing these old features? A
feature survey would be informative for us (exposing problematic
features we might be relying on). And it might go the other way,
revealing that old features are not worth the extra sweat to maintain.

Is this something Benny could offload to volunteers? Could people comb
the bug tracker for things like this and put out a summary?

Re: [MlMt] Two Quick Questions

2022-10-20 Thread Sam Birch

Jim,

I’m not sure what Henry is trying to express, but I have some
suggestions for you on thread display/management:

I don’t think MailMate supports _grouping_ messages non-hierarchically
by thread and _sorting_ them by date within each thread. (I remember
Microsoft Entourage having this feature back in the day and I miss it.)
The quickest thing I’ve found for looking through a single thread in
chronological order is to:

1. Click the subject line of the thread to focus on just this thread*.
2. Press Cmd-Shift-T to turn threading off. This should leave you with
all the messages in the thread, sorted by date (or however you like.)

\*Well, technically it’s “just the messages with this subject”,
but that’s usually close enough.

From here you can select multiple messages to see them in the view (in
the same order that they appear in the list), open them, whatever. When
you’re done, you can press Cmd-Shift-T again to turn threading back on
and hit escape to go back to viewing all messages.

You also have some options for expanding and collapsing threads quickly:

1. Hold down the option key and click the disclosure triangle next to a
message to expand or collapse responses to that message, recursively.
2. With a message selected, hold down the option key and press the right
or left arrow key to expand or collapse responses to that message,
recursively.

There are also commands to expand and collapse an entire thread, no
matter which message in the thread is selected. They are:

* `expandThread:`
* `collapseThread:`

These are not bound to keyboard shortcuts by default. I have them bound
to “[“ and “]”. (Debian users may recognize these bindings from
aptitude(1).)

Read [Custom Key
Bindings](https://manual.mailmate-app.com/custom_key_bindings) for
information on how to set this stuff up.

Here’s my (small) custom keybindings file:

```
{
"[" = "expandThread:";
"]" = "collapseThread:";
a = "archive:";
j = "moveToJunk:";
l = "toggleFlag:";
m = "toggleReadState:";
s = "moveToMailbox:";
"/" = "searchAllMessages:";
}
```

Hope this helps,

Note that in the picture I sent, of your first message it only shows

You reply to an email, interlacing your answers in blue. After
sending, you re-open the sent mail, and the entire email is in black,
because sent replies show unformatted.

You wonder whether the formatting actually came through ok, but
there’s no way to tell, nor any obvious way to bring up a formatted

Re: [MlMt] Manually Delete a Source?

On 11 Oct 2022, at 9:23, Scott Schulz wrote:

So I’m wondering if there is a manual way to remove that source from
the list, and any saved emails from disk?

Hi Scott,

This requires some surgery, but it’s doable.

IMAP accounts are stored in
`~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Sources.plist`.

SMTP accounts are stored in
`~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Submission.plist`.

Sending identities are stored in
`~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Identities.plist`.

If you’re familiar with plist syntax this should be pretty
straightforward.

The arrangement and properties of folders are stored in
`~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Mailboxes.plist`. This one is
pretty complicated so I would probably first try leaving it alone and
seeing if MailMate freaks out when it finds that the source for some
mailboxes has disappeared. If so, you’ll need to remove the items that
reference the account you’ve deleted in their `uuid` value. And then
if any of the items your deleted are mentioned in another item’s
`previousUUID` value, you’ll probably have to change the
`previousUUID` value to point to an item that still exists. (This is how
item ordering is defined.)

Make sure MailMate is not running when you edit these. And back them up!

Cached messages are stored in subfolders of
`~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Messages.noindex/IMAP`. You can
delete these once the account is gone.

Hope this helps,

How’d you manage that? I’d love to have that behavior.

When pasting into Microsoft Word, I get a hyperlink, so I know the data makes
it to the pasteboard. But pasting into a MailMate composer (with Markup set to
Markdown) gives me plain text.

I’m using MailMate 5902 on macOS 12.5. I tried selecting and copying the “More
information…” link from https://example.com using both Firefox and Safari. Used
⌘C to copy from the browsers and ⌘V to paste to MailMate.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I’m glad you’ve had an easy time of things.

I administrate an Exim + SpamAssassin + ClamAV + Dovecot system with around
sixty users. For me the biggest source of problems is when my users configure
their accounts to forward messages to one of the big webmail providers. As I’m
sure you know, this inevitably results in spam being forwarded, despite pretty
aggressive filtering at SMTP time. Despite my best efforts, Google or Microsoft
wake up some days and decide to blackball my mail server, and their policies
are so opaque that it’s impossible to understand how to get back into their
good graces.

It’s shit like that that’s worth $5/month to me, and why I don’t use my own
mail service any more.

I’d like to remind folks that there are several other top-tier email service
providers that have less motivation for user lock-in. They generally charge a
few dollars a month, which IMO is a bargain given how much of a hassle
maintaining an email server is. And it’s nice to be the customer rather than

I believe so.

Given this, I assume the purpose of the warning that a 1-pixel image

embedded images were downloaded contains obvious trackers?

That’s my understanding.

Yet, the message may very likely be from a "good" source but sent
using a commercial mail distribution service which adds its own
trackers.

I agree.

It would be more helpful if the warning would add the source of each
just-downloaded 1-pixel image to the "Strictly Blocked" list. Sort of
a "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" thing.

Yes, that would be nice.

Benny has expressed vague interest in allowing users to manage the image
block/allow patterns through the UI, but I don’t think it’s a

Henry,

I’m not sure why all this talk about previewing attachments. As
Randall said, his question has nothing to do with attachments. Instead,
it’s about tags in HTML emails.

And as Randy said, the reason why MailMate can’t “strictly block”
1-pixel images is that, in many cases, _MailMate has no way to know the
size of the image until it fetches it from the remote server._

For example, here’s an tag from spam message I recently received
(re-wrapped for clarity, and domain changed to avoid being tagged as
spam):

Randall,

This seems like a good one for a feature request. SFAIK, this
condition has been the case (the one pixel image)for awhile in the
downloads list layout for the attachments window section. It is ultra
compact.

Try this to view an attachment from Mailmate to open a window in
another app fairly quickly, as a workaround:

* Open an attachment in an email by selecting it, with CTL held down.
* Select the option in the drop down window, “Open with Preview
(default)” or choose any other app there you’d like (e.g., Word or
Pages for a document). There is probably a setting to directly select
Preview, the default but I don’t know it.

* You can close or save from there.
* I tried this and the full-size version of the attachment seems to
open in Preview for me.

To be honest, it hasn’t proven that much of a barrier for me,
however. But we’re just kicking it around in this group. Thanks for
the detail. Benny usually monitors this group so he can get some idea
of interest and make comments.

Other apps (Mail, Outlook) provide a means to view attachments in a
larger form as part of the message view (still in reduced format than
a page view), but still readable. The layout used doesn’t do this.
So do you think a new layout with that functionality is the answer?

Further thoughts:
1. Could it be that your download isn’t being directed/specified
to the proper place? Maybe not since the 1px file link is there.

2. Does a restart of the app or the machine make a difference

MM Preferences>Default Downloads Folder>select/specify the folder

Menu page there is a checkbox to “Insert file link when removing
an attachment.” That may have something to do with what you see.
Mine is checked by default.

Have a go at those settings.

My version is r5895, but I think those settings are the same in the
release version.

Hi Henry,

I'm not trying to download attachments (I access attachments via
their icon). I'm talking about the "Download All" and "Download"
buttons that appear when a message contains embedded images. Some
messages contain many embedded images and it isn't possible to know
which ones I want to see. I appreciate that MailMate categorizes
embedded images as either "blocked" or "strictly blocked," but I was
hoping that 1-pixel images (which are obviously trackers/beacons)
were categorized as "strictly blocked" and that "Download" (versus
"Download All") wouldn't download them.

Robert,

For what it’s worth, on r5875 pressing the option key _after_ I’ve

changes the text of “Quit MailMate” to “Quit and Close All

[MlMt] Separate sets of smart folders for each account

2022-02-10 Thread Sam Birch

Hi all,

I use MailMate with one email account for home and another email account
for work. I never really want to “mix” the two, but MailMate seems
to be set up to combine all accounts. Yes, I can create submailboxes of
my smart folders for each account, but what I’d really like is for the
top level to be accounts and then have my various smart folders under
that.

Before I construct parallel sets of smart folders manually, I thought
I’d ask: does anyone else use MailMate like this, and if so, what do
you do?

I also thought of putting smart mailboxes _inside_ each of my
“sources” rather than in the “mailboxes” section, but the first

Thanks for any experience you folks can provide.

[MlMt] Not working: "Include messages in any submailboxes of this mailbox" (MM r5865 on macOS 12.1)

2022-02-01 Thread Sam Birch
I’d like to have a smart mailbox that includes messages from all subfolders of
a particular IMAP folder. So I’ve selected that IMAP folder in the “Mailboxes”
tab. Since that folder contains no messages itself (only subfolders) the smart
mailbox is initially empty.

The problem is that checking the “Include messages in any submailboxes of this
mailbox” checkbox has no effect — the smart mailbox remains empty. Furthermore,
the checkbox clears itself if I switch to another tab or close the mailbox
editor.

This looks like a bug, but maybe I just don’t understand how it’s supposed to
work. Any ideas?

[MlMt] Test build - release notes update

2021-11-10 Thread Sam Birch
On Saturday Benny posted r5844, with a comprehensive summary of all changes
since r5673. It’s a good read if you’ve been sticking to the release builds and

next stable release is getting closer.

I’d still suggest that folks stick to the recommended Big Sur build rather than

This may be a question for Benny (though I am certainly interested in

While I like to stay more-or-less current, I don’t care about having

As far as I can tell, Benny doesn’t use the beta release channel much these
days. The latest beta release is r5673 — same as the latest normal release.

Realistically the only way to go for Big Sur users is to use r5757 or later.
IMO once you find a test build that works for you, you should stick with it
unless it starts to misbehave. Otherwise you risk upgrading to something that
breaks a feature you use (e.g. the Cmd-F window-resize regression around r5820).

Benny does seem to be updating the version of MailMate in the
MailMateBigSur.tbz download. As of this writing, it’s r5818. When it was first
posted, it was r5757. I’m not sure if Benny intends MailMateBigSur.tbz to
contain the latest test build, or if he’s selecting only certain builds that
are perhaps more stable than the very latest test build.

IIUC, Benny assures us that once he’s done with the big message view rewrite
there will be a normal release that works on Big Sur and things will settle
down somewhat.

Hope this helps,
