Any sustainable software development cycle has to include phasing out old non-essential features. There is also a natural reluctance to negatively impact existing users. This is especially true in a close user community like MailMate’s, where we all can interact directly with the solo developer. Why not spend some quality time re-assessing these old features? A feature survey would be informative for us (exposing problematic features we might be relying on). And it might go the other way, revealing that old features are not worth the extra sweat to maintain. Is this something Benny could offload to volunteers? Re: [MlMt] Two Quick Questions
Jim, I’m not sure what Henry is trying to express, but I have some suggestions for you on thread display/management: I don’t think MailMate supports _grouping_ messages non-hierarchically by thread and _sorting_ them by date within each thread. (I remember Microsoft Entourage having this feature back in the day and I miss it.) The quickest thing I’ve found for looking through a single thread in chronological order is to: 1. Click the subject line of the thread to focus on just this thread*. 2. Press Cmd-Shift-T to turn threading off. This should leave you with all the messages in the thread, sorted by date (or however you like.) \*Well, technically it’s “just the messages with this subject”, but that’s usually close enough. From here you can select multiple messages to see them in the view (in the same order that they appear in the list), open them, whatever. When you’re done, you can press Cmd-Shift-T again to turn threading back on and hit escape to go back to viewing all messages. You also have some options for expanding and collapsing threads quickly: 1. Hold down the option key and click the disclosure triangle next to a message to expand or collapse responses to that message, recursively. 2. With a message selected, hold down the option key and press the right or left arrow key to expand or collapse responses to that message, recursively. There are also commands to expand and collapse an entire thread, no matter which message in the thread is selected. They are: * `expandThread:` * `collapseThread:` These are not bound to keyboard shortcuts by default. I have them bound to “[“ and “]”. (Debian users may recognize these bindings from aptitude(1).) Read [Custom Key Bindings](https://manual.mailmate-app.com/custom_key_bindings) for information on how to set this stuff up. Here’s my (small) custom keybindings file: ``` { "[" = "expandThread:"; "]" = "collapseThread:"; a = "archive:"; j = "moveToJunk:"; l = "toggleFlag:"; m = "toggleReadState:"; s = "moveToMailbox:"; "/" = "searchAllMessages:"; } ``` Hope this helps, -sam On 19 Oct 2022, at 21:25, Henry Seiden wrote: Jim, Further responses in line below: As for my second question, [here is a screenshot](http://i.imgur.com/JFVPj5s.png) of my ongoing dialog with my lawyer. Re: [MlMt] Manually Delete a Source?
On 11 Oct 2022, at 9:23, Scott Schulz wrote: So I’m wondering if there is a manual way to remove that source from the list, and any saved emails from disk? Hi Scott, This requires some surgery, but it’s doable. IMAP accounts are stored in `~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Sources.plist`. SMTP accounts are stored in `~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Submission.plist`. Sending identities are stored in `~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Identities.plist`. If you’re familiar with plist syntax this should be pretty straightforward. The arrangement and properties of folders are stored in `~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Mailboxes.plist`. This one is pretty complicated so I would probably first try leaving it alone and seeing if MailMate freaks out when it finds that the source for some mailboxes has disappeared. If so, you’ll need to remove the items that reference the account you’ve deleted in their `uuid` value. And then if any of the items your deleted are mentioned in another item’s `previousUUID` value, you’ll probably have to change the `previousUUID` value to point to an item that still exists. (This is how item ordering is defined.) Make sure MailMate is not running when you edit these. And back them up! Cached messages are stored in subfolders of `~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MailMate/Messages.noindex/IMAP`. You can delete these once the account is gone. I administrate an Exim + SpamAssassin + ClamAV + Dovecot system with around sixty users. For me the biggest source of problems is when my users configure their accounts to forward messages to one of the big webmail providers. As I’m sure you know, this inevitably results in spam being forwarded, despite pretty aggressive filtering at SMTP time. Henry, I’m not sure why all this talk about previewing attachments. As Randall said, his question has nothing to do with attachments. Instead, it’s about tags in HTML emails. And as Randy said, the reason why MailMate can’t “strictly block” 1-pixel images is that, in many cases, _MailMate has no way to know the size of the image until it fetches it from the remote server._ For example, here’s an tag from spam message I recently received (re-wrapped for clarity, and domain changed to avoid being tagged as spam): ``` http://www.not-the-original-dom.ain/cljo8bq86/Cw4ear2u 2QPT6WIi5q6Mr2gNDEIIpk_24HKoK0Q7ulY/fSlEIVCxnTqw7304Z8k5-7DeoB8B TUDm4NmMX28zpyXKVfWsVIjfNzFFKOiXLw399vfpzvuSHfoXwZGLWvq6TfyuQPAJ OvdL7LOQ_tKLpSvPVXO1xJtHDimWEa5bpThzzWOgItSd6XMoWJdv7yKnLtzwcx3m -zrp7icAZ_1CAcg”> ``` Can you tell that this is a 1-pixel image? [MlMt] Separate sets of smart folders for each account
Hi all, I use MailMate with one email account for home and another email account for work. I never really want to “mix” the two, but MailMate seems to be set up to combine all accounts. Yes, I can create submailboxes of my smart folders for each account, but what I’d really like is for the top level to be accounts and then have my various smart folders under that. Before I construct parallel sets of smart folders manually, I thought I’d ask: does anyone else use MailMate like this, and if so, what do you do? I also thought of putting smart mailboxes _inside_ each of my “sources” rather than in the “mailboxes” section, but the first time I tried that I got a crash, so for now I’m not. Thanks for any experience you folks can provide. Cheers, -sam ___ mailmate mailing list mailmate@lists.freron.com https://lists.freron.com/listinfo/mailmate

[MlMt] Not working: "Include messages in any submailboxes of this mailbox" (MM r5865 on macOS 12.1)
I’d like to have a smart mailbox that includes messages from all subfolders of a particular IMAP folder. So I’ve selected that IMAP folder in the “Mailboxes” tab. Since that folder contains no messages itself (only subfolders) the smart mailbox is initially empty. The problem is that checking the “Include messages in any submailboxes of this mailbox” checkbox has no effect — the smart mailbox remains empty. Furthermore, the checkbox clears itself if I switch to another tab or close the mailbox editor. This looks like a bug, but maybe I just don’t understand how it’s supposed to work. Any ideas? [MlMt] Test build - release notes update
On Saturday Benny posted r5844, with a comprehensive summary of all changes since r5673. It’s a good read if you’ve been sticking to the release builds and are wondering what you’re missing. It’s also hopefully an indication that the next stable release is getting closer. I’d still suggest that folks stick to the recommended Big Sur build rather than using random test builds, but of course YMMV. This may be a question for Benny (though I am certainly interested in other, learned opinions), but should Big Sur users like me check this version archive periodically and update to whatever version is labeled MailMateBigSur.tbz? While I like to stay more-or-less current, I don’t care about having the very latest version, and 5757 is working just fine for now. On 17 Sep 2021, at 8:17, Stephan Bösebeck wrote: > so, I am curious: we have Standard builds r5678, Beta Builds (same?!) and > this secret squirrell-builds, right? Just to get it right... As far as I can tell, Benny doesn’t use the beta release channel much these days. The latest beta release is r5673 — same as the latest normal release. Realistically the only way to go for Big Sur users is to use r5757 or later. IMO once you find a test build that works for you, you should stick with it unless it starts to misbehave. Otherwise you risk upgrading to something that breaks a feature you use (e.g. the Cmd-F window-resize regression around r5820). Benny does seem to be updating the version of MailMate in the MailMateBigSur.tbz download. As of this writing, it’s r5818. When it was first posted, it was r5757. I’m not sure if Benny intends MailMateBigSur.tbz to contain the latest test build, or if he’s selecting only certain builds that are perhaps more stable than the very latest test build. IIUC, Benny assures us that once he’s done with the big message view rewrite there will be a normal release that works on Big Sur and things will settle down somewhat.
