Sorry about the late reply. I forgot to mention a caveat!

*If* the user has enabled the “Custom Location” feature in the
General preferences pane then it has to be disabled before copying the
folder. This is because this setting moves the “Messages” folder
into a different location (to allow it be indexed by Spotlight) and then
it's not copied. I *think* this is your problem.

The migration method only involving the `.plist` files does not have
this problem.

As always, thanks! The method you gave worked just fine. I used the
"copy the whole Application Support/MailMate folder plus the
Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist file" method.

MailMate has a local cache (copy) of emails, but the primary location of
emails is on the IMAP server(s). The cache enables MailMate to do almost
anything while offline. Any changes are then synchronized with the
server(s) when going online.

MailMate does not have local mailboxes (like “On My Mac” in Apple
Mail). In other words, you cannot move an email from an IMAP account to
some local-only mailbox within MailMate.

I’ve asked for a feature to download messages from the server for
local storage but was told it’s not possible.

If you don't need the emails in a mailbox within MailMate then you can
still copy the emails to local disk folders and then delete them in
MailMate. These emails are still viewable (and searchable using
Spotlight).

Benny,
I’m confused. I thought that MM didn’t have local copies of the messages.

I’ve asked for a feature to download messages from the server for local storage
but was told it’s not possible.

Please clarify for me.

Thank you,
Dave

Yes, if you want to move (almost) everything then make sure MailMate is
not running and then copy this folder:

/Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate

Note that the Library folder might be
[hidden](https://www.noterepeat.com/articles/how-to/70-mac-os-x-accessing-hidden-library-folders).

If you have never launched MailMate on the destination machine then you
could also copy this file:

/Users//Library/Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist

After launching MailMate this is a bit more tricky because of the system
[caching
preferences](http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20130908042828630).

Finally, if you want to refetch emails from the server(s) then you can
just copy these files and folders (the ones that exist):

/Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/*.plist
/Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/Bundles
/Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/Resources

Most users only have the `.plist` files. Using this approach you still
need to re-subscribe to bundles in the Bundles preferences pane.

I think that is all you need to know.
