Which is why I use iOS client which keeps an IDLE connection; it works
"just fine" (or something similar with iOS background functionality). I
didn't bother looking into details of it; I tried it; it worked; I used
it.

Many iOS email clients do this. It’s the price you pay for having
timely push notifications.

FYI, I found Edison and Preside both provide iOS notifications, and
neither needs a central server with access to all my email. I have seen
other email clients since advertise similar functionality. No need to
give away access to all your email.

So yes, giving away access to all your email is one way to pay the
price. It's not a price I'm willing to pay, so I paid the price of
looking for alternatives with smart background handling.

Just my 2¢.

That might have been true 4 years ago when that post was written, but
iOS has had background refresh for some time. It's no excuse anymore.

Storing passwords on servers is a security nightmare. Whoever wrote that
article clearly has little security clue.

Charlie and Verdon
thanks very much for your very helpful thoughts re dodgy software
companies and their sketchy privacy policies.
I guess we’re all guilty of clicking “I agree” too easily on
occasion… Or maybe not…

Thanks again to Bill for the initial shout.

Carefully read their privacy policy, and then decide whether you are
still happy having any of their software near any of your devices.
You may not want to be dealing with their support either.

They are not doing anything illegal; since they clearly state they
are going to take over your email accounts. I was far from happy
allowing a dodgy company to take over my email accounts.

A university I worked at attempted to ban the use of this product and
several similar ones, except you know, you can't tell some professors
anything ;-)

Serious security and privacy implications!

 Is there a ghost in my machine?

No, but there's almost certainly a Spark in your iPhone.

[MlMt] Mystery messages being created…

2020-02-06 Thread Jim Cook

Hi
For a couple of months now I’ve been seeing mystery messages cropping
up in various folders in Mailmate. They also appear in Apple Mail.

The messages have no sender, no recipient and no subject.

The body text says “Lorem. this is the body text”

Mailmate reports there to be an attachment called “test.txt"
containing “this is the attachment text”

Mailmate says “no headers found” and the raw source is as follows:

```
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
boundary="boundary text"
MIME-Version: 1.0
--boundary text
Content-Type: text/plain
Lorem. this is the body text
--boundary text
Content-Type: text/plain;
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="test.txt"
this is the attachment text
--boundary text--
```

The messages are appearing in folders associated with Microsoft accounts
(Office365 and an outlook.com account).

I have 10 messages today so far, in folders Inbox, Outbox (!?) and
Drafts.

Yesterday 58 messages appeared between the hours of 16:09 and 19:09 GMT.

When I first noticed the messages I assumed security had been
compromised and engaged in a wholesale change of passwords, but that
changed nothing.

I’m running Mailmate 5676 on Mac OS 10.15.3.

Is there a ghost in my machine?

All help gratefully received,

Regards
