The worst culprit in my experience is App Store. I often _do_ want to

take a screenshot and if I'm going to put bits into an email or

There's a trick to getting the separate button labels while also keeping
the icons: by default, the toolbar buttons are using 'combined' controls
that include more than one button in the same entry -- and hence only
one label.

This seems like the best arrangement, to me anyway, because you get two
cues as to what each button does, while (at least for me) still taking
up less space than the old text-only buttons did (though obviously a bit
more than the combined icon buttons).

Not quite sure I understood the example, but you should configure
MailMate to “Never embed” in the Composer preferences pane. You
should also disable Markdown and not use the code highlighting or math
features (all in the same preferences pane). I think that should
result in MailMate never needing to generate HTML. If not, let me
know.

Okay, science time.

... Hmm. It didn't do the thing, but it also didn't indent. The above
text was copied from a thing in Archive, and had a pipe. (And I don't
know whether it's generating HTML or not.)

Thanks Benny!

That worked. I thought I had done that a while back, but, apparently
not, c'est la vie.

Now that I've worked with this 'new' toolbar iconography, I have to
agree. I now waste more time hovering the mouse waiting for the
mouse-tip to pop up telling me specifically what the button is.

This one is for you and anyone like-minded:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmUseOldToolbar -bool YES

Yay.

The “Format ▸ Show Fonts” affects the part of the GUI which has
the focus. It seemed like a good idea when I implemented it a long
time ago, but it doesn't really work well and many users have trouble
using it. It does allow you to change the font of most parts of the
GUI.

(I should instead implement an explicit list of fonts somewhere in the
preferences.)

Ah-hah! That worked. And I note that I can move focus with the font
window open, then click on the font I've got selected, and everything
works. Woo!

Thanks!

Hmm. Okay, so, I think I figured out how to stop doing the "embedded
HTML"
thing, which I pretty much never want. But in the process of things, I
ended
up trying to copy text from a Sent Message. And the sent message was
displayed
with vertical lines left of things, instead of >. And pasting that tried
to
start embedding HTML, which isn't what I wanted, and didn't preserve the
>s,
which is also not what I wanted. Going to the "view raw message" thing
got me

the actual raw text.

So is there a straightforward way to indicate "please only send plain

Also the composer seems to have changed fonts, and maybe that's
because I clicked reset fonts, but I don't see how to change fonts for
a specific thing, there's just a single "show fonts" selector that
appears to affect the message list?

[MlMt] New version broke fonts?

2016-09-01 Thread Seebs

So, plain text emails are now displaying in a non-fixed-width font.

This is not ideal. But I can't find a way to change it. There's a "theme
for plain text emails is:" thing in preferences, which appears to have
some very subtle effect on rendering.

Also, there's a "show fonts" button in Font Settings, but it does not
appear to allow me to find out what font it thinks it is currently
using, it only allows me to pick a font. There's no "undo" for that, and
I can't tell what it was on before. And "reset fonts" goes to something
which is also not what I was previously using for the message list, but
I have no idea what I was using.

Mostly, though, I want to fix the display of plain-text emails.
