Packages have been built in Fedora koji for rawhide/f35 and f34. Packages
for rawhide are available now. Packages for f34 will land in the Testing
repo shortly, and after a nominal testing period will be tagged into the
updates repo.

Packages for f33 are available at

I'm not convinced this is a problem.

I can easily contrive a shlib that has no external references. ldd on such
a shlib tells me it's "statically linked" on both Fedora and Ubuntu.

And that's what libglusterd is, a shlib with no external references.

I can add -lc, but if there are no references to libc functions, then why?
Please cite a reference that shows this is required?

Fedora's autoconf/automake/libtool has always behaved slightly differently
than Debian/Ubuntu. Fedora seems to cache and use things that Debian
doesn't. It's been a PITA sometimes figuring out why a Makefile.am that
works on Fedora doesn't work, or works differently on Debian.

I might even argue that Debian/Ubuntu is working correctly in this case and
it's Fedora that is broken.

Other libraries, e.g. libc, that don't have any external references, appear
to link with /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2. Adding this makes the ldd output
look more "normal."

Again, please file an issue in the github issue tracker.

Is this a packaging problem or a build problem? Seems like a build problem.

None of the other gluster shlibs on debian have this problem, and they
aren't linked with -lc, so that seems like a red herring.

And it doesn't occur on the Fedora libglusterd.so.0.0.1.

Independent of anything else—

Maintain it. Send patches to gerrit. Get the requisite +2 reviews on the
patches. Amar still has commit privs AFAIK; he can merge anything that gets
two votes.

It's open source meritocracy.

If there's real support for it then it makes a stronger case for adding it
back to the community packages.

Re: [Gluster-Maintainers] Proposal to change gNFS status

2019-11-21 Thread Kaleb Keithley
I personally wouldn't call three years ago — when we started to deprecate
it, in glusterfs-3.9 — a recent change.

As a community the decision was made to move to NFS-Ganesha as the
preferred NFS solution, but it was agreed to keep the old code in the tree
for those who wanted it. There have been plans to drop it from the
community packages for most of those three years, but we didn't follow
through across the board until fairly recently. Perhaps the most telling
piece of data is that it's been gone from the packages in the CentOS
Storage SIG in glusterfs-4.0, -4.1, -5, -6, and -7 with no complaints ever,
that I can recall.

Ganesha is a preferable solution because it supports NFSv4, NFSv4.1,
NFSv4.2, and pNFS, in addition to legacy NFSv3. More importantly, it is
actively developed, maintained, and supported, both in the community and
commercially. There are several vendors selling it, or support for it; and
there are community packages for it for all the same distributions that
Gluster packages are available for.

Out in the world, the default these days is NFSv4. Specifically v4.2 or
v4.1 depending on how recent your linux kernel is. In the linux kernel,
client mounts start negotiating for v4.2 and work down to v4.1, v4.0, and
only as a last resort v3. NFSv3 client support in the linux kernel largely
exists at this point only because of the large number of legacy servers
still running that can't do anything higher than v3. The linux NFS
developers would drop the v3 support in a heartbeat if they could.

IMO, providing it, and calling it maintained, only encourages people to
keep using a dead end solution. Anyone in favor of bringing back NFSv2,
SSHv1, or X10R4? No? I didn't think so.

The recent issue[1] where someone built gnfs in glusterfs-7.0 on CentOS7
strongly suggests to me that gnfs is not actually working well. Three years
of no maintenance seems to have taken its toll.

Other people are more than welcome to build their own packages from the
src.rpms and/or tarballs that are available from gluster — and support
them. It's still in the source and there are no plans to remove it. (Unlike
most of the other deprecated features which were recently removed in
glusterfs-7.)

7.0 packagers are built in Fedora-31 and rawhide (f32). In f31 they are in
the -Testing repo for a nominal testing period, after which they will move
to the -Updates repo.

Packages for Fedora-30 and CentOS 8 and RHEL 8 are at [1].

Packages for Debian are landing at [1]. Packages for Ubuntu and SUSE are
landing in Launchpad and OBS. See the respective README files at [1] for
more details.

The top-level LATEST symlink has been moved to point at 7/7.0.

Packages are built in Fedora 32 (rawhide) and Fedora 31 (Branched).

Packages for Fedora 29 and 30, and RHEL 8 are available at [1].

Note: glusterfs-gnfs is no longer being built for _any_ glusterfs-7 package
set. This has been the case already in the CentOS Storage SIG since at
least glusterfs-6.0. glusterfs-gnfs was deprecated circa glusterfs-4.11,
and there have been various announcements that gnfs would no longer be
packaged starting with glusterfs-6.

glusterfs-gnfs packages were still being built by accident. This is finally
being fixed for glusterfs-7.

People who want NFS should use NFS-Ganesha. Source for the gnfs xlator is
still in the tree; anyone who really wants to use gnfs instead of
NFS-Ganesha is welcome to build their own packages from source, or from the
RPM src.rpm and Debian .dsc files that can be found in the repos along
with the rest of the package files.

The release jobs run on centos boxes. EPEL and python3 from EPEL were added
to the centos boxes in gluster's jenkins. The 5.7 configure.ac needs some
changes in order to handle this new state.

AFAICT, packages cannot be built for 5.7.

Re: [Gluster-Maintainers] [gluster-packaging] glusterfs-5.4 released

2019-03-13 Thread Kaleb Keithley
The v5.4 tag was made and a release job was run which gave us
https://build.gluster.org/job/release-new/80/artifact/glusterfs-5.4.tar.gz.
If the v5.4 tag is moved then there's a logical disconnect between the tag
and _that_ tar file, or more accurately the files in that tar file.

Shyam and I discussed the merits of releasing v5.5 versus respinning builds
with patches. Respinning builds with patches isn't uncommon. The
difference in the amount of work between one or the other is negligible. In
the end Shyam (mainly) decided to go with respinning with patches because a
full up "release" for him is a lot more work. (And we both have other
$dayjob things we need to be working on instead of endlessly spinning
releases and packages.)

The Version tag should be (considered) immutable. Please don't move it.

If you want to add another tag to help us remember this issue that's fine.

The other option which Shyam and I discussed was tagging v5.5.

GlusterFS 6.0rc0 is built in Fedora 30 and Fedora 31/rawhide.

Packages for Fedora 29, RHEL 8, RHEL 7, and RHEL 6* and Debian 9/stretch
and Debian 10/buster are at
https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/qa-releases/6.0rc0/

Packages are signed. The public key is at
https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/6/rsa.pub

* RHEL 6 is client-side only. Fedora 29, RHEL 7, and RHEL 6 RPMs are Fedora
Koji scratch builds. RHEL 7 and RHEL 6 RPMs are provided here for
convenience only, and are independent of the RPMs in the CentOS Storage SIG.

packages will get built one way or another. :-)

I've mentioned this on numerous occasions but it seems to largely fall on
deaf ears: we need other people to step up and take over some of the burden
of building community packages. Or we need to cut back on the number of
community packages that we build.

Gluster Community Packages for:

* Fedora 25 & 26 are available in the Fedora Updates-Testing repos. After a
nominal testing period they will move to the Fedora Updates repos. Use `dnf` to
install.

* Fedora 27 (rawhide) are available at [1].

* Debian jessie/8, stretch/9, and buster/10 are available at [1].

* Ubuntu trusty/14.04, xenial/16.04, zesty/16.10, and artful/17.04 are in
Launchpad at [2].

* SuSE SLES12, Leap42.2, and Leap42.3 OpenSuSE Build Service at [3].

* RHEL and CentOS in CentOS Storage SIG staging area at [4]. After someone
tests them and let's Niels know they will move to the mirror (at [5]) where you
can install using `yum` after installing the Storage SIG package.

*** Reminder ***: Since GlusterFS 3.9 the Fedora RPM and Debian .deb public
signing key is, e.g. for 3.9, at
https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.9/rsa.pub. If you have an
old /etc/yum.repos.d/glusterfs-fedora.repo file with a link to
https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/rsa.pub then you need
to fix your .repo file to point to the correct location. This is a safety
feature to help prevent unintended updates, e.g., from 3.10 to 3.11.

I'm certainly not an authority, but Ubuntu.com (versus Canonical.com) says that
even "regular releases" are _supported_ for nine months.

Versus the LTS releases, which are also _supported_, for five years.

It's reasonably clear to me that when Ubuntu.com says its releases are
_supported_, they're talking about there being a steady stream of bug fixes and
updates over the life of the release. And if someone wants real support – like
the kind that Red Hat sells for RHEL and RHGS – they'd need to write a cheque
to Canonical.

But we don't need to guess, we can just ask our resident legal counsel, who
will tell us if there are any implications to calling our planned long life
cycle release of Community GlusterFS an "LTS release."

Off hand I wouldn't expect there to be, but––

Richard (and Ric) what, if any, implications are there? Should we pick a
different name?
