To uncombine objects I use a free tool called PolyPlus that can be found at 
Directions Magazine at 
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/Default.asp?a=catdetails&title=&id=10&ProductID=&orderby=&Page=15&Pagesize=10

This tool is simple to use - just select an object or the whole table and 
press the uncombine button. It has saved me hours of work.
