MI Simple 3D Map

2000-05-23 Thread Michael Hart

I am attempting to produce a 3D Map in Vertical Mapper. I have created a
map of the US with a table of ordinal data i.e. 0 signifies no structures in
the state and 1 signifying structures residing in the state. I have created
a thematic map in MapInfo and would like to create a '3D' map in Vertical
Mapper to create a more significant visual. I realize this is a rather
simplistic question, but I am new to Vertical Mapper and am learning as I
go. Thanks in advance, and I also would like to agree with everyone's
sentiments about Bill and his continuous support.

Michael,

From what you wrote I assume you are trying to create a 3D chloropleth map
where each state is vertically displaced depending upon a value. If this is
what you are looking for read on.

1. Because you are dealing with such a large area I would make sure you map
is in a projection that will be easy to work in (not longitude/Latitude). I
would recommend Universal Transverse Mercator (NAD 83) Zone 14 or 15.

2. If you wish to have Alaska and Hawaii in your 3D scene, physically move
them closer. I know this will not be geographically correct but it will
limit the size of the resulting grid. If they are not within the bounds of
your analysis, delete them.

3. Next, choose Vertical Mapper Create Grid Region to Grid to convert
the region file to a grid. Choose the column from which cells will obtain
their value, in your case it will be the ordinal field. Choose a relatively
small cell size like 5000 metres and choose OK. For better results use a
smaller cells size.

4. Use GridView to render it in 3D. For better results create a drape
file.
