I don't have Windows environment, but one user who tried 2.2.0 release
on Windows reported that released tar ball doesn't contain
winutil.exe and cannot run any commands.

Thanks, Tsuyoshi

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Hadoop 2.2.0

2013-10-13 Thread Vinod Kumar Vavilapalli

Ran through my usual check-list.
 - Signatures and message digests all good.
 - The top level full LICENSE, NOTICE and README files look fine.
 - CHANGES.txt for common, hdfs, yarn and mapped are located as in before
releases.
 - Able to build the tars out of the source tar ball.

Testing: Built from the source tarball. All testing on single node, non-secure
setup - with separate installation directories for each sub-project.
Successfully started mapred history server.
Started HDFS daemons successfully.
Successfully started YARN daemons - ResourceManager and NodeManager
Ran YARN's distributed shell example.
Ran sleep, wordcount, pi, random writer, sort, grep and they all pass just fine.
App/Job listing, killing jobs all work well from the CLI.
Did basic YARN/MAPRED UI browsing, all seems well.
I am surprised no one else mentioned this. Besides symlinks, there is one more
incompatible change that I hit (as I expected). We should call out the
following incompatible change in the release notes.
YARN-1229. Define constraints on Auxiliary Service names. Change
ShuffleHandler service name from mapreduce.shuffle to
mapreduce_shuffle (Xuan Gong via sseth)
With that, here's my +1 for the RC. Ship it!
Thanks,
+Vinod

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Hadoop 2.2.0

2013-10-10 Thread Chris Nauroth
+1 non-binding

I verified the checksum and signature. I deployed the tarball to a small
cluster of Ubuntu VMs: 1 * NameNode, 1 * ResourceManager, 2 * DataNode, 2 *
NodeManager, 1 * SecondaryNameNode. I ran a few HDFS commands and sample
MapReduce jobs. I verified that the 2NN can take a checkpoint
successfully. Everything worked as expected.

The outcome of the recent discussions on HDFS symlinks was that we need to
disable the feature in this release. Just to be certain that this patch
took, I wrote a small client to call FileSystem.createSymlink and tried to
run it in my 2.2.0 cluster. It threw UnsupportedOperationException, which
is the expected behavior.

Built a complete stack of Bigtop on top of this RC and run smoke tests
for all of the components (HBase, Crunch, Pig, Hive, Mahout, Oozie,
Flume, Solr, Sqoop 2 and recently released Spark). This generated
some 1000+ jobs submitted to the fully distributed secure and non-secure
clusters that Bigtop is spinning on EC2.

I'm happy to report that all the tests passed and it looks like Hadoop 2.2.0
will be an extremely solid foundation for the entire Hadoop ecosystem:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BIGTOP-

All in all, congrats on a really solid set of bits -- this is a really
big milestone
for Hadoop and its ecosystem projects.

Thanks,
Roman.

 I've created a release candidate (rc0) for hadoop-2.2.0 that I would like
to get released - this release fixes a small number of bugs and some
protocol/api issues which should ensure they are now stable and will not
 change in hadoop-2.x.

 The RC is available at:
 http://people.apache.org/~acmurthy/hadoop-2.2.0-rc0
The RC tag in svn is here:
 http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/tags/release-2.2.0-rc0

The maven artifacts are available via repository.apache.org.

Please try the release and vote; the vote will run for the usual 7 days.

 thanks,
 Arun

P.S.: Thanks to Colin, Andrew, Daryn, Chris and others for helping nail
down the symlinks-related issues. I'll release note the fact that we have
disabled it in 2.2. Also, thanks to Vinod for some heavy-lifting on the
YARN side in the last couple of weeks.

Great! As usual, Bigtop is now building the entire Hadoop ecosystem on top
of this RC:
http://bigtop01.cloudera.org:8080/view/Upstream-tests/job/Hadoop-2.2.0/

Feel free to grab packages from there once the job is done.

I will be also deploying clusters and running the usual Bigtop battery
of tests on them. Stay tuned!

Thanks,
Roman.

+1 for the release.

I have deployed a multinode cluster and extensively tested MR speculative
execution, YARN CLI and YARN distributed shell. There were couple of issues I
encountered while testing MAPREDUCE-5533, YARN-1168, YARN-1167, YARN-1157,
YARN-1131, YARN-1118, YARN-1117 and all of them have been fixed.

Thanks,
Tassapol
