[mapserver-users] MSCompanion version 1.0 Release Candidate 1 is Available

2009-04-16 Thread enri
Hi,

After several days of test with cooperation from some kind friends, the release
candidate 1 of version 1.0 is available now, changes happened since the beta2
include:
1. Bug Fixed: Class legend can not show in layers tree and Style preview
does not work on some version of Windows.
2. Bug Fixed: Error caused by RichEdit? on MSCompanion start.
3. Optimized the procedure of path search on start up, add a status text
box to show the search progress.

Because these changes are very important to help you avoiding critical problems
when you use MSCompanion, so this RC1 comes out a little earlier than planning.
Please visit http://code.google.com/p/mscompanion/ to get it as usual.

In addtion I will continue debugging the latest version, the main work will be
documenting the user manual for MSCompanion before the offical V1.0 release. I
wish you report bug you meet when you use this version to
mscompan...@googlegroups.com or enri.z...@gmail.com, so that I can present you
a better result.

Best regards,
Enri

RE:[mapserver-users] Mapfile Editor - MSCompanion version 1.0 beta2is available

2009-04-16 Thread enri
Nelson Correia,

Thank you very much for your information, I will try my best to get rid of the
bugs you mentioned, and resolve the rest problems in the coming version by
enhancement.

And, some words to explain some problems item by item:

Regarding the preview problem, the preview is now shown on the layer tree, but
it still doesn't appear on the Style Properties dialog. I hit the preview
button, but nothing happens.
about preview problem, it is caused by the invalid path of layer data, if
MSCompanion can not figure out where the data is, this problem could happen.
You are encouraged to use the dialogs to set the paths of layers specifics, and
save the result, problems should disapear next time you open the saved file.

I am tracking some bug, problems and features I find useful and here are them:

- I always have to change the map properties to use absolute paths and then to
use relative paths again, in order to use MSCompanion. This
is a little bit annoying, since I have to do this every time I start
MSCompanion.

I suggest you use absolute paths and save it, next time you may need not do
that again. But I will try to repeat the problem and find a resolution.

- When I edit a layer/class and cancel my edition, why do it redraw the map? I
have several large shapefiles and it is stressfull when I
cancel my changes and still have to wait a few seconds to continue working.

Yes, that's a problem now, I will fix it.

- The mouse scroll doesn't work pretty well on the MapFile text editor.

Yes, it's true. Frankly I don't find a way to satisfy myself by now, as a
compensation, you can use the scroll bar by the time.

- The update button on the text editor became desabled when I click it and
then cancel the update.

I will test it.

- The layers tree is not updated when I add a class/layer through the text
editor.

Yes, when you update the mapfile by text editor, you must reopen the file to
view the changes on map.

- I think it should be a way of updating the information from the mapfile, for
exemple to allow us to edit it with an external editor and
see the changes in MSCompanion without restarting it.

Good suggestion, but in my mind it is a little difficult by now, I will
consider that in the future versions.

- The styles in MSCompanion allow us to define a min and max scale for them,
but I didn't find any support for it in the MapServer
documentation and it doesn't seem to work. Is it a bug?

I got this from
http://www.mapserver.org/development/rfc/ms-rfc-45.html?highlight=rfc, but I
don't know if it is implemented.

- I think that would be very useful the ability to do pan on the map.
Currently it is a little bit difficult to change the view port
mantaining the scale.

You are correct, I will do that.

Thanks again.

Best regards,
Enri

 Hi,

The new version now runs properly without those exceptions I've mentioned.

So far I've encountered one problem (relative to the version I was using):
it doesn't show the preview of the class styles on the left menu. It now
shows the same arrow that the one that indicates the selected item of the
menu. I think that the preview of the style is very usefull, specially when
you have lots of layers, each one with several classes.

James Perrins,

Thank you very much for your careful analysis. Obviously you are right, I will
fix these problems in alpha4.
I took it for granted the dependent dlls should locate at the same directory as
libmap.dll, that's the reason caused the PATH problem.

Thank you again.

Hi enri,

I have made some progress and sort of have it working now.

I have discovered a a few thinsg you might like to take into account:

1)The add layers option from the menu always seems to error - right
clicking on the map does work though

2) I think there is some re-pathing issue - when I captured the
command you were creating and ran it from the command line -
shp2img.exe told be it could not find a dll which was in
C:\ms4w\Apache\cgi-bin\ - and this path was set in your app. As a
work around I copied all the dlls into the C:\ms4w\tools\mapserv\
directory and things started working

C:\ms4w\tools\mapserv\shp2img.exe -m C:\Documents and
Settings\JamesP\My Documents\Visual Studio
2005\Projects\DesktopMapServer\DesktopMapServer\384~.map -o
C:\DOCUME~1\JamesP\LOCALS~1\Temp\382~.png -s 534 497 -e
-3.42765815730672E-11 -108426.966292135 120 1008426.96629213 -l
UK

3) I was also trying to run your app from teh desktop - which meant
the temp map file was being created on the desktop - and on XP of
course this has spaces in the path name - which caused an error - I
think you need to consider enclosing path names in quotes

Anyway - I now have a map displaying - so I am happy - I will have
more of a play later when I have a bit more time

Best wishes
James

2009-02-21 Thread enri
Hi, James,

when you run MSCompanion the first time, it will create a config file according
to your settings in the folder of the EXE file as I expect, which named as
msc.cfg. If you can not find such a file, perhaps every time you start it, it
will compain about the directories.

As for the settings of directories, please go to the System Directories tab
of the System Config dialog, check Guess the other directories when one of
them is set, and click the button right of the first Mapserver Utilities
Directory, locate to the shp2img.exe file, for MS4W could be
C:\ms4w\tools\mapserv\shp2img.exe, then if you have MS4W installed, it should
verify the other directories correctly.

if the directories are right, usually it should work. Please tell me if the
problem is still there.

Good luck,
enri.

Hi,

Thanks of this - I think it could become a very useful tool - but at
the moment I have some problems.

I have the latest version of MS4W installed in C:\MS4W - despite the
configuration pointing at this it still said it couldn't find the
directories at first
Eventually - after restarting several times it no longer complained
about the directories (although they were still pointing to the same
place??)

Now it opens up - but when I create a new map and goto add a layer it
just tells me I have an Access violation at adresss x

Best wishes
James

Sorry the help document is not available, I will try my best to write it

1. version of mapserver the mapfile for: just like 5.0 5.2 5.2.1 or 5.4, as
Mapserver does
2. goto menu Tools-Options then choose System Directories tab, check the
checkbox at the top, and click the botton right of the first text box, locate
to Mapserver Utilities folder, say D:\ms4w\tools\mapserv\shp2img.exe, then
wait a while it will correct all other directories to point to the right folder.
3. Could you explain with more words what's the meaning of Highlighting

4. A web version is not in my plan, because there are already several choices.
But I do consider to implement the function of menu item Map-Publish with
MS4W as a underlying environment.
5. All MSCompanion does is write a Mapfile for Mapserver's use, it changes
nothing but the mapfile authoring method. Generally you can check the result
mapfile to find the source of problems and go to the right place fix it.

By the way, paths such as MAP-SHAPEPATH, LAYER-DATA in the the result mapfile
can be relative or obsolute path, you can set it at Gerneral Tab of MAP
Properties dialog. Keep in mind when you move the result mapfile to other
production environment, you must keep the right relationship between this paths.

I don't know if these words can answer your question.

Thank you foe your message.

Good luck,
Enri.

Enri,

Looks interesting from a first glance. Very comprehensive.

First things I noticed (because you asked):

How do you define what version of MapServer the Mapfile is for? I did find the
Default Version of MapServer entry, what should the entry look like? Just the
version number? Some hint next to the entry form would be good.
How does a user change the drive leter. I had MS4W installed on the D drive.
It all worked after I manually switched the drive letter in all the entry form
slots.
Highlighting comments (or even highlighting all aspects, function/data) would
help.
Did you think about building a Web version at all.
I still haven't figured out how to connect to my mapserver (which is in a
different location than the MS4W install) for the image display. I keep
getting a Invalid image size error.
Still looking . . . .

Really nice so far though. Thanks for the effort.

Hi,

Several months ago, I planned to contribute a mapfile editor to you, the
Mapserver community. After many overnights' hard work, the first alpha version,
a totally WYSWYG mapfile editor - MSCompanion is finally available now. Please
find it at http://code.google.com/p/mscompanion/ and check if it can help you.
Also I am waiting for your response and suggestion.

[mapserver-users] Poll: Do you think a standalone Mapfile editing tool is necessary?

2008-07-23 Thread enri
Hi, guys,

I am planning to develop a stand-alone Mapfile editing tool for mapserver based
map authoring by a way of WYSWYG, including symbol editing, because I find it's
so difficult to use a text editor authoring a mapfile to render beautiful map.
But I am not sure if it's usefule for you, or someone else has already done
that.

If you think that would be useful, please give me a vote and that will
encourage me to contribute faster to the community. But if you find I am
repeating others work, be kindly tell me please.

Re: [mapserver-users] Poll: Do you think a standalone Mapfile editing tool is necessary?

2008-07-23 Thread enri
Hi everybody,

Thank you very much for your response and information. Basicly the information
I think you give me is that it's necessary provided a perfect or better tool is
contributed. Maybe you will be disappointed when you get it.

Anyway, this tool will puts focus on windows users and dedicates to MAPFILE
authoring, I mean it isn't another desktop GIS, it's a light weight mapfile GUI
editor running on windows. Actually I have started the work according to my
reqiurements. I think the initial version (version 0.1) will be available in 1
month. For the long run, this tool will support every parameter which
MapServer supports in a friendly way.

Best regards.

I don't think it in necessary, the old way does work, but I do think it will
be very useful I'm not aware of any other specific such application
available.

However, would it work for you as a QGIS plugin? QGIS can export a mapfile
now, but it is a long way from perfect, and that would potentially give you a
good head start in this arena?

[mapserver-users] How can I rasterize the symbols in a symbol file?

2008-06-04 Thread enri
Hi guys,

I want to preview the symbols in a symbol file by drawing them without drawing
the whole mapfile, is that possible and how can I do that? Is there a utility
like shp2img available?

Thanks a lot.
